That is a cool gig I love fixing up old reels I got a 65 Long Beach I’m fixing now it only needs the spring that keeps the left side Bearing from loosening up

I'm surprised those Penns are even still in one piece! (Most of them anyway) Investing in new Jigmasters or even the cheaper conventional reels and just doing simple maintenance might be a good idea for those boats.

I have seen both in action under heavy usage. The new Jigmasters just do not hold up as well. Unfortunately, there are few alternatives for the captains as the Long Beach series is no longer available. The newer Jigmasters have a habit of freezing the gear sleeve to the bridge shaft, they wear out the A/R dog faster, the eccentric springs break easier and the gears grind a lot. I know captains that buy the jig masters and toss them when they break. If they get the full season out of them, they are surprised. - Thanks for the note

It’s a hard luck life! These reels have a tough time so you have your work cut out for you. Do you put new line on every reel you can repair? If you do what kind of spooling tools do you use? I have one of those revolving head line spooling tools that I use. It seems to work well and limits any line twist as you put new line on a reel. Of course I’m working on spinning reels rather than conventional reels like these Penns. Good luck with all these reels Dennis! - Chris

I leave the line to the mates on the boats. They use the 10000 yard spools and have limited line twist issues since they are conventional reels. It gives the mates sometihing to do! Best wishes - Dennis

Hey Dennis curious question - When doing repairs on the charter boat's reels as what is shown in the video do you also re-spool the lines, or is that only done by request?

I do not respool the line. I leave that to the captain. They generally top off the line after several break offs. The captains are pretty good about keeping the line fresh. They don't want their customers losing fish due to bad line. They also over do the max test. Most run 30# mono when the recreational angler would be using 15. Another precaution against breaking line. Thanks

good to see your bush fix replacement knob still going strong. would the blue Loctite help with the screws vibrating loose, or would that be working yourself out of a job
