Bionic limbs keep getting better. This prosthetic leg is a robot you can walk on - and it makes decisions so you don’t have to. Subscribe for more Superhuman episodes: freeth.ink/instant-sub-emergi...
Alec was a football coach who got hit by an out-of-control, speeding car while he was on the side of the road. Miraculously, he lived - and now he’s testing a bionic leg on the cutting edge of biotechnology. It uses AI (Artificial Intelligence) to help amputees walk naturally, in ways that are impossible with rigid prosthetics.
In this video, we went to Salt Lake City, Utah, and met Alec and the University of Utah’s Bionic Engineering Lab that is developing the device. It’s the latest episode of Freethink original series Superhuman, telling the stories from the front lines of medical innovation.
In this season, we’re focusing on amazing, inspiring advances in medical technology that are enabling paraplegic individuals to overcome paralysis or move in unprecedented ways. What do you think the future holds? Let us know in the comments and subscribe to Freethink for more incredible tech news and advances bringing us into the future.

@Alec McMorris Thank you for replying to the person. Of course I have a million questions, but I don't want to overload anyone. I've just been into bionics ever since I was a kid and would like to contribute to it in a meaningful way.

Absolutely fabulous the work that these folks are doing and the collaboration with Alec is just wondrous! As a military veteran, I see this as an opportunity to help so many with service-related injuries.

Seems more logical to do this then try to hook directly to the brain being that we don’t have a full understanding of it.

that if you connect the sensors to the other leg ... and read the data ... and mirror it to the prosthetic leg ...smooth movement and joint bending time

I'd like to know what some of the challenges are for this technology. Going by this video, you would think it's already perfected and ready for release. Is there anything it struggles with currently and why? Processor limitations?

I would be optimistic as well, as I very am hugely enthusiastic about future prosthesis... However, we have been *here* with this same level of prosthesis for decades now. AI is a huge step forward, for sure. But it's no different than having a fancy peg leg. What we need is a direct connection between humans and machines. And we should be working together and sharing our technologies to get this done.

I routinely lose my balance an fall because one of my legs, or both, suddenly goes limp at a random height off the ground which causes me to fall because my leg just suddenly isn't supporting me anymore. I sometimes wish I had my legs removed and replaced with prosthetics because at least then the balance issue would match up.

fuck yeah, science! gdi right before the end, the sentiment at 5:25, i can't agree. it's way too optimistic and skewed. just... there will always be physical disabilities that prosthetics and mobility aids cannot help. but keep doing what you do, because the people that could possibly use augmentation like the prosthetic featured, they need this support and hope.

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the blessed Machine. Your kind cling to your flesh, as if it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass that you call a temple will wither... and you will beg my kind to save you.

I don't like the idea of bionic limbs that makes the decisions for you, because that for example would mean if you were to move your foot around without really moving around but just your foot alone, you wouldn't be able to.
