Күн бұрын

This documentary follows the story of a Black-owned family farm through multiple decades and generations. The farm has a will to survive... Hear why the farmers started to farm and why they continue to this day.
Although they are not often highlighted, there are numerous Black farmers and cattlemen that have been farming for generations, adding to the tapestry of American farm life. This documentary looks at a Black generational farm and how it operates with other Black generational farmers in Southern Arkansas.
The youngest cattle rancher (beef farmer) featured is still in high school taking agricultural classes. He is looking forward to a future in agriculture, including studying agriculture at Texas A&M, the University of Arkansas, and Louisiana Tech University.
In 1920, there were more than 925,000 Black farmers in the United States; by 2017, there were fewer than 46,000, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This documentary highlights Black farmers and ranchers who are committed to continuing their families' farming culture and heritage.
The Billing Family Farm 's original owner and current owners are members of the Arkansas Cattlemen Association. The farm raises Angus and Hereford cattle crosses.

I grew up in a farming family, it's a lot of hard work and more heartache than some may realize. My aunt was one of the firs orgainc farmers in the US, and one of the handful of female farmers to run more than 1000 acres. What a great documentary.

@@TBlevins2222 I could not say. It was in Minnesota. Our family was part of the famous underground railroad so I'm thinking that may not be likely. We owned a house in NY not far from the Canadian border. That was of course, before my aunt moved to Canada.

@@TBlevins2222 I don't know what your living situation is, whether you are living in a city or a rural land. If you live in a city, there are a lot of urban gardening sites and youtubes. If you live in the suburbs or a rural area, you can start in your own yard. I think the way food prices are going we may be going back to the Victory Gardens of days gone by. If you want to farm on a large scale, the best bet would be to contact a local farmer (not big ag, they will use you up and spit you out.) A lot has to do with the area of the country you live in, the soil, and what types of crops will do well in your area. Local farmers would best be able to speak to that. You may want to work on a local farm for a while, just to see how it's done and to gain experience. It's how my dad met my mom. He lived in the city and went out to work on her parents farm. That was a loooooooong time ago.

This was a truly great watch. Was that your husband? Was thinking that maybe he could link in with the school/college agricultural programmes to offer real life work experience for the students that would help with the fence and general maintenance??🤔🤷‍♀️ I used to volunteer as a country-side ranger and we often had students and also young offenders on placement. All were welcome and most really benefitted from the (all weather) outdoor experience 😊😊

I think farmers all over the world are taken for granted, they work extremely hard to put great produce on all our tables, its not a job its a way of life. If any of you are fortunate enough to live near a farm with a farm shop then do please try and support it.

I live in Somerset, surrounded by small farms, some dairy. Farmers tell me it’s hard, lonely work for little profit, but the reward is working outside surrounded by the beauty and peace of nature. No matter the country, we owe farmers so much - thank you.

To the Billing Family Farmers Specifically and Black Farmers Everywhere in The US I send my Prayers and respect to you all as I am an Elder Black Man born and raised for my first 12 years until we migrated from the rural south to those crap holes of New York/jersey! in Brundidge, Alabama! I am retired twice now and seeking my roots within the rural Black South experience! I am NOT Wealthy but I am seeking to make a few donations to several different Black Farmers but I am Not Sure how to go about connecting with them! If anyone can respond to me here and let me know how to connect with them! All I am asking in return is to be able to visit with them sometimes and volunteer with them doing whatever it is they feel I am able to do without being a bother to them! I currently live in Tucson, Arizona! MaCon Jones!

UK humour *shrug* I would never have known black farmers even existed in the US if it wasn't for you. How would we know? Enjoyed this very much and I'm not a farmer! All your family have a nice calm manner about you, even the in laws! Reggie seems like a good guy & its great that they all help each other out because farming is hard! Here in the UK we assume that all farms in the US are hundreds or thousands of acres, its good to see a family farm continue, which is similar to the way many farms are in the UK

What an excellent documentary Mac. A pleasure to have an insight into the lives of these lovely families. Also interesting to visit South Arkansas, which looks lush and very pleasant. A cousin of mine, a City girl from Canada married Gary, a Texan who had studied agriculture and crop growing. They farm organic soft fruits in Hill Country, Texas and are surrounded by small scale cattle people, and I've been lucky enough to stay a few times.. we visited some of their farming friends some distance away and who were down a 4 mile dirt track. Nobody getting rich but with a sense of purpose and self on their own land in peaceful countryside. It is a part of american life and culture which we don't really know about here. It is conducted on a human scale, rather than vast factory operations. All the more interesting when set alongside you and your family's British adventure! Glad you are finding good things here in England

It's nice to see something talking about minorities in agriculture. Most of what you see is W.A.S.P. and their success. I'm a Native American and it's hard to find anything about minorities succeeding in agriculture. Love to see a follow-up to see how things have survived in these tough economic times

Many farms in the United Kingdom have been in the same family for generations. They continue father to son. Not an easy life.
@dmoore167

It is unusual for the reason mentioned by Brian3989 and that there was not significant numbers of Black people in the UK until very recently. There is a guy called Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones who moved from Jamaica who trades under the brand The Black Farmer whose products are in all the major supermarkets so I should imagine he's doing extremely well for himself? But all in all it's a tough life & many struggle to keep going.

Thank you for sharing such a great story. What is the difference between a farm and a ranch?
@MacandBlair
@MacandBlair 3 жыл бұрын
Most people say size. Ranches tend to be larger than farms. The names are somewhat interchangeable. But ranches raise livestock (cattle, sheep, goats, etc.) Farms tend to be fruits, vegetables, and dairy cattle. Of course there are horse ranches... but horses are not considered livestock. Sorry for the rambling answer. In my experience, some people like to call their property farms and some ranches. There are a lot of different definitions but it is mostly people choice.
