We are now back on the boat in the Sea of Cortez and the boat work, upgrades, organizing and cleaning begin before we untie the dock lines and set sail again.
Our trip back home in Colorado allowed to order parts and spares in preparation to upgrade the boat and ready for another season and the great Pacific Crossing in the spring. There were luckily no hurricanes in the Sea of Cortez this summer, but it looks as if one happened on the inside of Evolias. There barely was any room for us to even sleep, stuff everywhere as Warren and I were working on some new upgrades for the boat.
Warren wanted to beef up the solar panels and new batteries to increase our power grid as well as the longevity of the batteries, which meant that he had a lot of work cut out for him. Rewiring and making more room for the panels, while I was busy reorganizing and organizing again the interior of the boat. After 2 years of being liveaboards, we have come to learn a lot of what works and what doesn't so it was time to put all our upgrade ideas together.

I'm so tickled to learn that Erica loves organizational gizmos and doohickeys, too - Warren can't pass an office supply store without going in for an hour and feasting his eyes and his imagination on all the Treasures!! Then watching Warren be perplexed, then totally stumped, then realize the perfect solution for the solar panels on the bimini - wow, he always puts me in awe! Now if they only had a mailing address to receive shipments... The battery panel was gifted; all those hours at Tetris paid off! ;-)

Hello, I have an FP Salina 48, about the batteries to avoid engine heat, I moved the battery pack under the bed of the aft cabin by creating a shelf across the float. I was able to place 1200 amps of battery.

hope you used thermal conductive glue for the heat sinks, cause if you didnt you just made it a lot worse. It will act like a blanket and make the batteries warmer.

@@WEsail Think of it like the processor in a PC, thermal paste between the processor and heat sync, it may seem fine for now, but it wont be working as it’s supposed to be, it will heat up due to its proximity to the battery, but it wont be drawing the heat from the battery very efficiently at all, no doubt it will shorten the life of those expensive batteries. I’d also agree with another comment, the best idea to cool anything is to suck the heat out for better cooling in an enclosed space.

Is it the air intake or more like the hot air exstact , ? You can draw cooler air in but maybe a lot better to take hot air out, there is no circulation because you've jammed them in,
@WEsail
@WEsail 3 жыл бұрын
No it’s cool air (cool compared to the 130+ degrees that the engine compartment can often reach) and the air is drawn through the tented area by a bunch of holes and slots I cut (did you miss that on the video?) and than either into the motors or out the fresh air on the other side... been able to keep the batteries much cooler!! Thanks for asking!! Cheers bud
@davidwarnes5158
@davidwarnes5158 3 жыл бұрын
@@WEsail no I saw the holes , the heat from the batteries will kill them , there is no space for air to circulate , wait til it's Sumner, put in an exstrator. I have seen many batteries melt through this , the engine room isn't the place for a good life .

it's called a Head because on the old navel sailing ships the toilets basically holes in the deck were situated right at the front of the ship "The Head" and also near the Figure Head the sailors would have to go up there squat and do their business also the waves would often break over the bow of the ship and this would help clean the area.of course officers had better toilets, "Heads" in their quarters this name has stuck up to today on modern navel ships it is still called the Heads.

Question for you, what's the town you're keeping your Cat in? Was wondering about safety. Does it seem like a safe place for a family to keep their boat at? I live in Phoenix and we're considering buying a Catamaran. Thinking we could keep it down near Rocky Point or is there somewhere else you'd recommend?
@WEsail
@WEsail 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Alex! Excited to hear you are considering sailing!! Yes it felt extremely safe! We would not say that about many places, but it was truly a fantastic place! Rocky point is also supposed to be great too, and it would be closer to you but haven’t been there personally... but again, SC is a really great option!! K good luck, have fun, and stay in touch!

I do appreciate that you cannot show step by step in a 20 minute video everything you do in a project. Now of course you might get an occasional shock from connected batteries you were installing them terminals made a connection and ok minor shock. However I did not see you fasten then down or more importantly isolate them from each other You are on a boat which is going to move they may slide if precautions are not taken and though best possible outcome of that is you blow out some very expensive electronics I am more worried about a fire hazard. I presume and hope that this is just a step you did not include in your video and of course I am not a boat electrician but it seems a bad idea most especially close to the engine compartment.
