Yeah, during my first trip to Britain we (a busful of high/secondary school students) got a local tour guide. Upon learning that we were from Bulgaria, he asked if we had brought our Bulgarian umbrellas with us. Not the most pleasant thing, being associated with the criminal actions of your country's (previous) government, but certainly witty and on point! Neither the perpetrator nor the people who ordered this crime were ever brought to justice. RIP Georgi Markov.

You think you've found a continuity hole but you haven't. Two points; one is that from 0:15 there is, after a longer call than the one from Hacker, a longer gap between calls than the one that allows Bernard to leave, secondly Hacker holds the line open on the phone he calls Bernard on until after he has entered the room and closed the door, so only one of his two phones was able to receive. Perfectly credible he could leave the room before the phone rang again.

I remember watching this back in the 1980s. (Yes I'm that old) If I recall correctly the origin of all the chaos was that the French president was coming to London and as the Queen had apparently given him some sort of gift when she'd been on a state visit to Paris he would have to return the favour and he'd decided to give her a puppy. However British law at the time was that dogs coming into the UK from overseas had to go into quarantine for 6 months to make sure they didn't have rabies.

A bomb in the grounds of the French embassy turned out to be planted their by the French Secret Service. It was a ploy to try and gain the upper hand in the talks about the channel tunnel. However British security were not fooled, and knew it was planted by the French. This means Hacker can use it to his advantage over the channel tunnel = this all happens near the end of the episode.

In those days, South Africa had apartheid, and also exported lots of produce. I remember my dad religiously boycotted all SA produce. I assume this is the idea here. The audience expects a human rights reference and is surprised. Maybe someone has a more accurate explanation.
