Thank you so much for validating being a language major :') I'm currently getting my BA in English and French (in Germany) and people always feel the need to tell me how I'm never going to use my degree... but I've learnt to not let these people get me down and follow my dream to become an interpreter/translator

strange thought that's not necessarily directed towards you or anybody else, but one I had while watching this video nonetheless: how does one deal with feelings of inadequacy in fields they love? I LOVE literature and reading and words and narrative and yadda yadda yadda but then I watch some booktube videos or some bookstagram posts and the feeling of being a fraud hits HARD. Like, I read a book a month if I'm doing well, but then there's people who read a book a day. There's also wonderfully literate folks like you who read difficult classic books as children. I distinctly remember trying and failing!

Don’t feel invalidated because of how much reading people do! I love reading but sometimes I go days without reading because I read purely because I enjoy it. I am also not a very critical reader and a lot of symbolism flies over my head so when I watch videos of people reviewing books I feel stupid! The best thing to do is to just keep moving forward and know that you will get better

I totally relate! I'm currently an English major as well, so seeing classmates and other literature lovers devour all the classics was quite discouraging since I personally struggle with older texts. I used to love reading as child and in middle school, but I started becoming absorbed in social media and digital entertainment. I'm trying to get back into reading, so I reassure myself that there's no need to constantly compare yourself to others. There are way better (and talented) writers and readers out there, but we can just focus on ourselves!

23:20 it's so sad that you were told that your pets would not go to heaven! I grew up with numerous pets over the years but I was always told that they would go to heaven and it helped me so much processing their deaths and dealing with that kind of loss. And to this day, even though I'm not really into religion or faith, the thought of an afterlife existing and nobody ever really being gone is so ingrained in my head and still helps me a lot with dealing with those topics...

To the point that you made around the uses of writing in the labour market, people really don't understand the extent that this applies. I work in what would be considered a 'dry' field (life insurance), and yet the most exciting part of my role is that I get to build arguments to try and give people money. The ability to form an argument and write it into a 2-5 page document is critical in my role. Your channel has got me to apply (and be accepted) back into university to do some post-grad work in english studies - so thank you!

Emma I was just wondering if you could suggest a good translator for The Divine Comedy?? I want to buy it but I want the translation to be decent. And yes! yes! Animals are a treasure to this world, to me they are a gift, not to be used by humans, but to be taken care of and respected. And of course they have souls, and feelings, opinions, etc. Any person who denies that is greatly concerning to me (future Serial Killer maybe?!) Animals are my favorite part of this Earth, along with nature :o)

I’m so pleased to learn you’re a vegan, Emma (hello, I am binging your videos right now). To add to your suggestion regarding vegan reading, the seminal book on veganism is Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation. I became a vegan based on my emotional response to the suffering of non-human animals. Singer provides an irresistible (dare I say irrefutable... yes!) ethical and philosophical argument for veganism which I have found very useful. If you haven’t read it already, definitely worth checking out!

I'm baffled by college in other countries, seems like u can just take whatever elective no matter your subject? Like I got accepted into a sociology bachelor. If I changed my mind, I would have to drop out of uni and reapply for another bachelor next summer, and I couldn't take an elective that wasn't a sociology course. I wish there was a little more wiggle room - would have loved to take a psychology course or a litterature course.

@@ark8tct Thanks for rambling, it is interesting! :) Didn't even realize college and university weren't just two words for the same thing.. We also don't have the opportunity to study for two degrees or minors. Well I suppose you can go back for another degree later if you want, but then you would have to pay for it yourself. So I have never heard of anyone doing that. Here you can only get transfered to another uni if you want to continue the same degree. within your own university it is only within the first maybe month or two you can switch to a different degree and only if you have the subjects for it. Here it very much depends on the degree and the university how difficult it is to get in, but I suppose that would be the same most places. Denmark is a very small country so we only have 8 universities in total, so you don't really have a lot of options to begin with :D

If you are interested in a weird math book, consider ‚Galois and the theory of groups‘ by Lillian Lieber 😊 This book is written entirely in verse, and contains really beautiful and strange illustrations. It is meant to be read by lay people, but at the same time, the mathematics is as sound as it can possibly be for the intended audience.

U said "no" re a book to an adult librarian? What other not-for-kids books did u borrow from the library vs the wishes of adults?

I love this video so so much! If you do come to the north of England, please please let's go for tea/coffee together because it would be amazing (if this doesn't come across as creepy...). I hope you are having a much better week this week

If you want to learn math, may I suggest the KZfaq channel Numberphile. Khan academy is good too for someone just getting started up to first year university. I did a degree in finance, so I did some math. But pure math can be beautiful and wondrous, like an excellent novel. Learning about the Reimann hypothesis, the prime number theorem, or Euler’s identity is awe inspiring and it feels as if you are discovering inviolable truths about reality. Or then again, I’m drunk, so woohoo. Thanks for making your videos, I’m trying to read more literature. My reading list is extensive.
