Trace the 7,000 year old history of alcohol, from its first known origins in China to cultures all over the world fermenting their own drinks.
--
Nobody knows exactly when humans began to create fermented beverages. The earliest known evidence comes from 7,000 BCE in China, where residue in clay pots has revealed that people were making an alcoholic beverage from fermented rice, millet, grapes, and honey. So how did alcohol come to fuel global trade and exploration? Rod Phillips explores the evolution of alcohol.

Alcohol addiction actually destroyed my life. I could remember several years ago after divorce with my wife which brought me into my disastrous journey with Alcohol. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Got diagnosed with cptsd. Not until a friend recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Much respect to mother nature the great magic shrooms.

I'm 56 and have suffered for years with addiction, anxiety and severe ptsd, I got my panic attacks under control myself years ago and they have come back with a vengeance, I'm constantly trying to take full breaths but can't get the full satisfying breath out, it's absolutely crippling me, i live in Australia. I don't know much about these mushrooms. Really need a reliable source!! Can't wait to get them.

Chicha (the Amazonian alcohol mentioned) is made by chewing maize into a coarse paste. The amylase in saliva breaks down the starches of the kernals into simple sugars, so they in turn can be converted to alcohol by microorganisms. Chicha is still drank in parts of South America today, and a place that sells it is called a Chicharia. Chicha is made almost exclusively by women; in fact, women on average produce more amylase in their saliva than men, so they're naturally more suited to the task. Chicha also tends to be low in alcohol content, no more than 4% ABV.

(Colombian) Yes, but hallucinogenics aren't use in chicha for years, because, you know, it's a problem use or sell allucinogens here. But yes, chicha is delicious, i can't explain the taste, it's like citric but sweet, and yeah, the percent is 4%, because the point with the chicha is a balance, when the chicha "se pasa" it's because the alchol content grow up, and the taste is to strong, to drink. And, NOT, is not so easy to do (i wish) jajajaja

The discovery of alcohol was likely a complete accident similar to how Penicillin was discovered. What probably happened was stored food or drinks became spoiled and because of the harvest being so important they were left with no choice but to try the formenting beverage/food in order to survive and accidentally stumbled upon alcohol.

One thing I have noticed with TEDed is that every time the topic reaches Middle East/Asia facts become shortened, skipped and at times regions/people names are not even mentioned. But on the same topic when the same topic reaches Europe suddenly comes categories, names, locations and dates in much more extended explanation. Take wine for instance not a single mention of Persia, Armenia and Georgia. Beer’s history is much earlier and detailed than what is mentioned in this video. But who am I to tell TED what to say and do, you guys have already decided what is to be said and what history is more fun/important to be highlighted…
