A Brief History of Dog Tags in the Military

During the Civil War, American service members worried how their bodies would be properly identified if they were killed in action, a fair concern, considering more than 40% of the Civil War dead remain unidentified.
To ease their minds, some soldiers tattooed their epitaphs on their bodies, while others made personalized dog tags out of paper or stitched them onto clothing. These identification symbols were also fashioned into coins or carved into wood chunks and hung around their necks. It was their way to assist the living when no official process was in place.
The unofficial practice took some time to gain traction, and although the identification method is popularly known as “dog tags” these days, the term wasn’t coined until at least 1936. The nickname stems from a matter that doesn’t even involve the military. William Randolph Hearst, a newspaper magnate and yellow journalism pioneer, published an article in an attempt to undermine support for President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. Hearst heard about a proposal for the newly formed Social Security Administration to give out nameplates for personal identification - adding all workers would receive treatment as if they were dogs, and private information would no longer be confidential. He called these identification plates “dog tags.”

Was given my own dog tag when I was 7 years old while father stationed at Elmendorf AFB, Alaska. So was mother and my siblings. It just had name and blood group stamped in it. That was in 1950, during Korean War and cold war Soviet Union first successful test of a nuclear weapon. Seems everyone on base had one in case of hot war and our remains had to be identified😮. Sadly lost it in Tucson when I was adult. Thanks for this history lesson.❤

Might wanna add during ww2 the navy and marine corps dog tags were smaller ovals than the army’s and universal tags across the service weren’t in play till mid 50s

I was hoping you would tell people what the notch was for on the Dog Tag in WWII. You wore two dog tags, one would be taken form the dead soldier and the other would be jammed between the teeth of the dead soldier with the notch inserted between the teeth and then jammed so it would not fall out. Not sure what the procedure was when the dead had no teeth left.

this is a fairy tale, to frighten civilians, sort of like the M1 Garand "ping" alerting enemy troops, or yuge camel spiders. The notch was for the machine making dog-tags, to keep the lettering straight & aligned, if you have ever seen a dog tag machine. Somewhere along the line the notch was dropped

The British Military still uses the circular design marked with the big 4 name number blood group and religious denomination.

The British in WW1 used leather ID tags, so even when we find bodies now, the tags have rotted away.
