Trace the history of how wolves, one of humanity’s oldest rivals, evolved into the domesticated dogs we call “man’s best friend.”
--
Since their emergence over 200,000 years ago, modern humans have established communities all over the planet. But they didn’t do it alone. Whatever corner of the globe you find humans in today, you’re likely to find another species as well: dogs. So how did one of our oldest rivals, the wolf, evolve into man’s best friend? David Ian Howe traces the history of humanity’s first domesticated animal.

Can we take a moment to appreciate that the humans didn't immediately try to kill any wolves that came near their camps? Like, they probably already recognized the wolves as their fierce competitors and STILL gave them their scraps and let them close. For their kindness, they were rewarded with good boys that would accompany them FOREVER.

Can we take a moment to appreciate that the wolves didn't immediately try to kill humans in their camps? You fail to understand that prehistoric humans were much smaller than today. An unarmed human stands no chance against a grey wolf-sized dog. From the dogs' kindness and cooperation, we have all this. Without it, humans are still cavemen. We are the junior partner.

Carlos Santana once said that for any great guitarist, you only need to hear a few notes to know who they are. Just a couple of bars is all you need to recognize BB King or Edge or Stevie Ray Vaughn. It's the same with artists - just a few lines and you can't help but think of Keith Haring. I consider this a very nice tribute to an artist who left much too soon...

Hachiko's story: Hachiko was a Japanese dog who was abandoned in America. He walked around the streets until a man called Parker Wilson found him. Since he felt sorry for the dog, he decided to take it home with the intention of returning Hachiko to his owner. Weeks passed as Hachiko and Parker had fun together. Hachiko would always wait at a station, eager for his owner to return. One unfortunate day, Mr Wilson had died in 1923 at his work place. Hachiko was two at the time and was unaware of this. He waited all day long for his owner to return. Days turned to week, weeks became months and months became years. Hachiko had been waiting at the station for 9 years, still unaware and with so much patience. He would wait and wait in order for his beloved owner to return. Little did he know, his owner would never return. After waiting for his owner to return for 9 years, Hachiko died at the age of 11 in 1934 or 1935. People who were close to Professor Parker Wilson realised and many people came to know about this heartbreaking, loyal story. Today, Hachiko's statue stand at his waiting spot. This act deserves to be noticed. This true story of a loyal dog proves that they are better the humans. I just heard about this story and wanted to share it. His act of heroism is so powerful that several movies are based on it. Sorry for making you cry. I hope Hachiko goes to heaven! 😭🙏♥♡

One more point to mention. Because dogs were domesticated by humans. Humans became more safe. Each tribe had numerous dogs which were responsible of protecting tribes at day and night, accompanying humans in hunting journeys and protected them while they were asleep at night. The extra security that dogs provided allowed humans to be more stable hence to expand and invent and discover many sciences. Stability is the most crucial thing for the progress of any nation.

Dog culture is recent and I feel it’s had it’s day! Horses are much more part of our history! I hope dogs will be considered like cigarettes/ 2nd hand smoke soon . The amount of attacks and maulings going on is absolutely horrible worldwide . Dogs need to be driven into very small or nonexistent numbers .

Something cool I found out recently is that many hound dogs have those long floppy ears so when they have their heads low to the ground sniffing and tracking, the ears flop around and help to kick up scents from the ground to help the dog track. I don’t know why, but I thought that was super cool when I found out.

“I don’t believe in evolution” **points at basset hound** So that’s just been there since the dawn of time? Running around majestically? **points at teacup chihuahua** And that? That’s been a thing that stood a chance of living a wild life? Humans just caught and tamed wild chihuahuas?

@@WanderingQuill artificial selection is still a process of evolution. Evolution in general is very broad and includes editing/selecting genetic traits, something that artificial selection does.

Owww....I am loving my dogs more. I have 2 dogs. The first one was brought by my dad as she was ditched in a sewage for being a girl(now she is 5 yrs old). And second one came to our home for shelter, no one wanted to keep him because he had bad leg formation(now he is 1 yrs old). I just love them both.
