No footballer ever deserves to become a punchline. To make it to the level of professional they have to have talent, dedication and a work ethic that most people can barely comprehend. But a player who won six major trophies, 62 international caps and scored over 150 top level goals in particular has no place as a joke. This is Emile Heskey.

I’ll never forget the final game of the 2006/07 season, where he had to play centre back against Sheffield United after we went down to 10 men. And actually did really well. Probably the best illustration of his ability really. May not have been prolific, but you asked him to fill a role and he’d do it.

People who don’t rate Heskey don’t understand football. Look at the likes of Darren Bent, James Beattie etc who’s careers spiralled and they played lower down the leagues or stopped scoring goals. Heskey played at the top level for a long time and if it wasn’t for KSI and being picked at the 2010 World Cup which wasn’t his fault, he’d be appreciated more.

Shame for Heskey, younger fans will always see him as meme, if simply looking at his goals to games stats (a younger friend of mine described him as the 90's Carlton Cole). His position and style of play has now become redundant due to the advancement of the game, but he was players player and truly brought the best out of Owen in his Ballon Dor season!

People in general, especially football fans, they have short term memories. The powerful Media didn't help his reputation with their mocking stories and character assassinations. You are only good as your last performance in football. Heskey was mostly slated by fans, but respected by players and managers. Steven Gerald once said "He works for the team. Puts in a lot of good running, holds the ball up well and can get very important goals and provide assists in crucial games". That's coming from a Liverpool football legend and an out spoken person who doesn't dish out many praises.

But wait, the same people who trolled Higuain would actively defended Messi's penalty misses against Chile in 2016 (which demoralised the whole team) and his lack of inspiration in a painful defeat to France in 2018. tl;dr : majority of football fans are immature hypocrite

To this day I can still remember this one moment, when my opinion forever changed on him. Like many especially when young, your favourite player is the one that scores. If they don't score, they are poop, play somebody else. Then came this one game, I can't remember which but it was an England game and I can see this moment quite clearly in my mind... ...the ball was hoofed long, possibly equal part defensive clearance as well as pass... it was heading towards Heskey and then, he did the unbelievable, he turned his head away from the ball, took his eyes off the ball!!!.... to look upfield, he then turned his head back towards the ball and headed the ball beautifully to Owen, who slotted it away easily.... ... and I was stunned, up until that point, childish me had just assumed he had no confidence, hence why he never scored, how wrong I was, that moment showed me he had complete confidence in himself, and unlike some, he acknowledged his limits and instead thrived on his other skills.

Heskey was the perfect target man: A tactical forward who's job isn't necessarily to score loads of goals, but receive high and long balls, dominate in the air and hold the ball up while the rest of the team transition forward.

Ever since the cretin, KSI really cemented Heskey as a joke among the FIFA and casual crowd, I've defended Heskey to anyone who'd listen. I'm a Liverpool fan, and his first 2 and a bit years at Anfield were very much a success. Then Owen started picking up injuries for fun. A young Gerrard was still finding consistency in his game. And.. we signed fucking Diouf instead of Anelka, latter, every Red I knew at the time wanted instead given his successful loan. Heskey in the MON Leicester sides and again, the first couple of seasons at Liverpool was a nightmare for opposing players. Near unplayable at times, and capable of scoring some ridiculous goals (KZfaq it!). Unfortunately Houiller around 2003 started randomly playing him as a winger basically, and his Liverpool career nosedived. Goals dried up big time. In short, he was shafted given his ability and Hou's decision. I can't comment on Brum too much, but I do remember him and Rodegella (sp) being very good together for Wigan. The guy deserves better from fans, particularly some Liverpool fans still, and England fans for all he did. Tbf, he deserves better from football fans in general, but thanks to KSI, that may never happened until his final breath. And given the moronic nature of social media generation fan certainly, he'll still get ridicule. As pointed out in the vid, Owen & Rooney all loved playing just off him and performed at their best then.

As a Wigan fan, I whole-heartedly agree - the only discrepancy being that Heskey departed Wigan in the same transfer window that the club signed Rodallega (Jan 09). Heskey's most successful attacking partnerships whilst at the club probably came with the likes of Henri Camara, Amr Zaki and Antonio Valencia.

A lot of what he did went unnoticed, but he was the kind of player others players loved to play alongside; sure he doesn't have the same 'numbers' as some of his contemporaries. In his days at Leicester, Liverpool and his first season or so at Birmingham, he could occasionally run in behind where his power and strength were utilised in another way. He adapted his game when he was 29/30 to become a pure target man which hampered his scoring (which was never particularly prolific) but prolonged his career as he always gave sides that played a particular style of football a good option. Amazing how a season before he left Leicester, they had prepared themselves with an almighty prolific strikeforce in record signing Ade Akinbiyi and journeyman Trevor Benjamin. Oh dear....
@thisisatest8010
@thisisatest8010 6 жыл бұрын
Akinbiyi was signed by Peter Taylor after Heskey had left. In theory he wasn't a bad replacement as he had similar physical attributes to Heskey and had a decent goals return in the second tier. However, he turned out to be absolutely horrendous.

Aryan Dewan Heskey says "Hi Fernando, I won a treble with Liverpool" Torres says "That's amazing but you're still shit" Heskey says "OK keep telling yourself that, Fernando. Tell me, what trophies did you win at Liverpool" Fernando says "well erm, well I nearly won the Premier League" Heskey says "nearly isn't good enough, Fernando, you couldn't even win the league cup with Liverpool, call yourself a legend, pfft, there is only one Liverpool legend in this conversation, now leave me to kiss my Winners medals, loser."

Played a massive part in saving my club Leicester City. Will always be a legend in my eyes. Anyone who takes the piss really doesn’t know much about football. In the very early days of his professional career at Leicester, the man was a beast and at times unplayable.

heskey was a different kind of player and that frustrated his career...rather than being focused on scoring, his play, if you watch him off the ball, is to create huge problems for the defenders which he was brilliant at. his strike partners got the credit but watch him off the ball. he's drawing defenders, confusing them, creating space..they can't ignore him as he is a huge goal threat, but in doing so creates the space for others................very much underestimated and under appreciated

When Heskey broke through at Leicester, he looked unstoppable. Quick, powerful and fearless. But something happened to him when he moved to Liverpool, I'm not sure if it was injury related or tactical. But he seemed to lose that fearlessness. Instead of powering through challenges and barreling towards goal he would go down to win free kicks at every opportunity. He seemed to lose the electric pace and acceleration that made him so dangerous in his teens. Despite that he had a superb career. But honestly as a teenager he looked like he would become one of the best players in the world.

As a Birmingham fan I remember him very well when he played for us. His goal scoring wasn't what we appreciated him for, it was his strength and work rate. He would fight for every ball and win nearly every ball in the air. I don't think there's any other player on earth who has created as many goals and chances as Heskey did with his head. Heskey was a jack of all trades, a master of none, but better than most at many things, just never never enough to stand out as "world class" player.

It's strange that people expect Heskey to have scored 22 every season when his role and the team around him changed significantly during his time at Liverpool. For example, he'd barely play with Barmby or Babbel ever again, McAllister and Berger were only there for one more full season and by 02-03 he was playing mostly on the left of midfield.

As a Leicester Fan we appreciated him as being part of the best side we had ever had (until Ranieri's side) under Martin O'Neill, and were gutted when he went to Liverpool - though also bemused that they paid so much. He had always played a supporting role, and was a supporting forward in a classic 4-4-2 for me, rather than a goal scoring striker. He was a genuinely nice bloke and was known round town for being such, and ultimately would always been seen as a good part of that vintage side. He always felt like one of our own, even though people took the mick. We have taken the mick too, but I do feel guilty, because that was a great time to be a Leicester fan and he helped us win the League Cup and then go on to play in Europe with a crucial goal in the final, which we never thought was possible for Leicester. We still have a little statue in the town square celebrating the year we won the cricket county championship, the Rugby Premier league and the League Cup, and he was a major part of that. So hats off Emile, we still remember.
