Hungarian here! Thanks for emphasizing in the 1st part how Liszt considered himself as Hungarian, aka Magyar. Austria tries to claim him as "theirs" though even his name is Hungarian (Liszt means flour). Also, just a little insight because I saw some comments in the comment section: Hungarians pronounce "sz" as "s" and "s" as "sh" --> that's why it's Liszt. Do not confuse "sz" with "zs" because we pronounce "zs" as "j" ;) *flies away*

Chopin's identity is also mixed: although a son of Poland (born there to a Polish mother), he spent the last half of his life in France, which was his father's native land. So the French consider him 100% their own (according to Garrick Ohlsson).

Russian composer Alexander Borodin ,who was a medical research chemist also, often attended medical conferences in Paris where h e would look up Liszt if he was in town and play some of his compositions over to him. Many other composers also sought his advice including a young Grieg who said Liszt played over his piano concerto from score faultlessly advising him a few changes.

I have heard Liszt but I am mostly an opera guy I have a lot of love for Verdi and Wagner I never got to take piano or any other instrument . I always sang arias from operas I can sing in 4 languages, Italian,French,German and Latin. I wish I could play the piano.I composed piano pieces but never heard them .I wrote an overture to what was going to be a ring cycle but in Italian and not as long as Wagner but Verdi is my favorite he wrote close to 30 operas .

“Ach du lieber, mein schatz”! Wonderful but “speedy” video on senor Liszt! Most people don’t know that Franz Liszt would never be allowed on a ship because it would develop a “LISZT”!!! Come on now people, put on your thinking cap AND THINK! Liszt - as in “LIST”, like leaning to one side!! Heard two adjectives that might describe some of Liszt’s piano music - “OUTSTANDINGLY FIENDISH”!!! Think “devilish or brutal”! Regardless, he wrote some of the world’s most gorgeous & greatest music, especially for piano! Think of “Gaspard de la Nuit” by Ravel; “Islamey” by Mily Balakirev; many pieces by Rachmaninov. What a great great repertoire of fantastically wonderful piano music we have to enjoy from!!! No shortage of fine pianists either!! “Gesundheit”!

Fantastic video! Have you read the three part book series on Liszt by Alan Walker? It is an amazing read. I am currently reading his book, The Death of Franz Liszt: Based on the Unpublished Diary of His Pupil Lina Schmalhausen. He has to be one of my most favourite romantic composers. One of the hardest to play too.... the Rhapsodie Espagnole is killing me lol.

Hey cool videos, thanks so much. However, I do wish you had included more info on his development as a composer - like when works were completed, the public reaction and so on. This was awesome! Thanks so much for taking the time to put together a condensed biography. I'm a rock n roll guy for the most part but appreciate music in all facets (basically, if I enjoy it, I listen to it) I don't know nearly as much classical as I probably should but of what I do know and enjoy, Liszt is my favorite by a considerable margin. I remember someone telling me years ago that he was arguably one of the first "rock stars" ever. I also heard somewhere that he was one of the first well known pianists to perform facing his audience. I don't know if that is true or not but I like to believe that ot is. Haha. Anyway, thanks again and keep up the good work.
