I have been wanting to create a video about the history of US Highway Route 66 for quite some time now. I have driven it many times while delivering motorhomes. It is not what it used to be, and I tell you how it all started, and why it is not as great as it once was.

It's interesting that a lot of Indians have bought up all those cool old motels along Rt.66 and have restored and reopened them, with ridiculously low room rates. Nice that they're keeping that nostalgia alive!

Most of old US-66 in CA is SR 66 and open to traffic. The exceptions are the stretch running through the Marine base at Barstow (controlled access since 9/11) and the Colorado River crossing coming into the state (if you're taking the Oatman alignment in western AZ you can cut through the reservation straight into Needles - if you do, top your tank up at the tribal-owned Thalypo gas station). Also, the various alignments through LA are all open to (and full of) traffic but have various route numbers.

when I was 5 we left KS. and drove to CA. on RT. 66. My parents never told me' You are on the Famous Mother Road" it was just a road then. we drove it all at once, my dad only stopping for naps. It was a long drive and I remember all the roadside attractions and billboards and seeing Indian children and teepees being depicted on everyone. I am so glad for that road trip and I have always had the travel bug, in June I visited my 50th state!

For those who don’t know, it was John Steinbeck’s 1940 book The Grapes of Wrath that coined the term “The Mother Road” “66 is the path of a people in flight, refugees from dust and shrinking ownership, from the desert's slow northward invasion, from the twisting winds that that howl up out of Texas, from the floods that bring no richness to the land and steal what little richness is there. From all of these the people are in flight, and they come into 66 from the tributary side roads, from the wagon tracks and the rutted country roads. 66 is the mother road, the road of flight.”

I just got back from a trip to California and the Grand Canyon, the second time in my life I've made such a trip, and it was only late into the trip that I realized we were basically more or less following route 66. I live in central Illinois near I 55, and my mom played the song Route 66 a lot, so I already knew a bit about Route 66 but it was one of the unexpected cool things about this trip that I ended up running smack into the history of Route 66.

Just drive from Tulsa through OKC on I-40. Ran parallel Route 66. Pulled off once or twice just so I could say I was on Route 66. Drive all the way to the Big Texan in Amarlllo to have a small steak dinner just to say I've been there. Drove through New Mexico and looped north to Santa Fe. I've driven from Santa Monica eastward through Barstow to Oatman and Arizona. Wonderful road to match with the history.

That trip we went to Phoenix and saw a side of this beautiful country id never seen before! Absolutely amazing... And also, can't leave my comment without mentioning some of our favorite stops on the route: Redmon's candy factory, and one of my personal favorites, Cline's Corner!

I just watched this video and I actually started to get a little bit emotional. I remember seeing the first Cars movie when it came out and had the privilege of getting it on DVD. For many years as a kid, I could not watch the flashback montage of Radiator Springs without shedding a tear or two, and I have Our Town by James Taylor to thank for that; I think I even have a vague memory of bursting into ugly tears in the cinema due to how nostalgic the song is. The song's nostalgically wistful atmosphere was about this very thing: Highway 66 being replaced by the interstate highway system and the freeway corridors of I-55, I-44, I-40, I-15, and I-10 completely bypassing the multitudes of small towns and suburbs of larger cities that sprung up along the routing by as much as several dozen miles. On top of this, it reflects on the paradigm shift in the lifestyles of the residents of these towns for the worse due to the economic annihilation the freeway system wrought upon these areas since the clientele their businesses relied on to stay in the black was diverted away.
