A broken gate and "static drop switch move" OMLX 2254 CCR Railroad filming train in rain

I changed the title because the FRA felt the railroad needed investigated over this video. It is a perfectly legal and acceptable move. Sorry for bringing the heat down on the crew... Fuk the FRA.
On Friday March 23rd 2023 we caught the CCR finishing up for the day. This engine had been sitting on a siding for a long time inactive but something must have happened to the 2604 so we made sure to get right down to Cleveland Monday morning to catch them working. Unfortunately it was pissing rain but we made the best out of it by wrapping the cameras up with plastic and getting muddy! Their work for the day was a run east on the former Erie Lackawanna Randall Secondary. At E 116th St the gate was broke so the conductor had to assist it! At 6:18 they appear to be passing the remnants of a passenger platform. The last run of passenger service was on 14 January 1977. At Bedford Heights they tied down the engine on the main and let the cars roll into the siding to get the locomotive on the west end of the train. They would shove 1 hopper east to Nestle Stouffers but that shot is inaccesable from the ground.

I enjoyed the video. I'm a retired CP Conductor & safety officer. The move you illustrated to re-position the cars onto the other end of the locomotive, is something we used to call a "gravity" or "static" drop on CP. The operation you've shown could make a good modeling project.

Nice video. I'm an Erie fan and former commuter out east. We did the gravity move on the railroad where I worked in Indiana. Its stlll done today. It's not an FRA regulation violation. A single handbrake will control a short cut of cars.

Another poor Eastern line that has fallen upon hard times and it looks like the big customer is a bakery with those North Dakota Mill cars. That old platform along with what appeared to be a shelter is a real throwback. You get extra credits for being out in bad weather but since it's a line that has infrequent service it's good documentation

@rjb5847 10 ай бұрын
You're 100% correct & I've done both, but when grades allow for it, "static drops" as we called them, like the one performed in this video were much safer. Flying or running switches are inherently dangerous. When I was writing rules in CPs head office 20 plus years ago...running switches as we called them, were one of the first things I prohibited. In the old day you referred to, there were more than one member of the crew on the ground. Doing a flying switch with one person is all but impossible.

I am not comfortable with the conductor riding the point of the gravity drop. Would have been safer to ride the bottom. Also if the cut had been able to hold air, leave them bottled and bust the air once the cut had reached the point of clearance. But only if they were holding air. Other than that, they executed their job safely and efficiently. Hopefully Sergio doesn't see this video or he'll call them in for a safety meeting anyways.
