Full Western Movie, Full Length Cowboy Film, English "A Bullet For The General": • A Bullet For The Gener... - Quién sabe? (original title), Runtime 1h 58 min., Action, Western.
A band of Mexican gun-runners employed by a revolutionary general accept an American into their gang, unaware of his intentions.
Director: Damiano Damiani
Writers: Salvatore Laurani (story and screenplay), Franco Solinas (adaptation)
Stars: Gian Maria Volontè, Klaus Kinski, Martine Beswick
A Bullet for the General (Spanish: Quién sabe?), also known by its international title El Chucho Quién Sabe?, is a 1967 Italian Zapata Western film directed by Damiano Damiani, written by Salvatore Laurani and Franco Solinas, and starring Gian Maria Volontè, Lou Castel, Klaus Kinski and Martine Beswick. The film tells the story of El Chuncho, a bandit, and Bill Tate (or El Niňo), who is a counter-revolutionary in Mexico. Chuncho soon learns that social revolution is more important than mere money. This is one of the more famous Zapata Westerns, a subgenre of the spaghetti western which deals with the radicalizing of bad men and bandits into revolutionaries when they are confronted with injustice. Others in this subgenre include Compañeros, The Mercenary and perhaps most famously Duck, You Sucker! Some parts of the soundtrack, composed by Luis Enríquez Bacalov, are featured in the videogame Red Dead Revolver.
PLOT (Wikipedia): During the Mexican Revolution, a Durango-bound government munitions train is forced to stop due to the presence of a crucified army officer on the tracks. El Chuncho Muños, a gun runner loyal to the revolutionary leader General Elías, leads his gang in an assault on the train. Lieutenant Alvaro Ferreira attempts to save the officer, but upon being fatally wounded by Chuncho, he is forced to order the train to run the officer over and escape the bandits. Bill Tate, an American passenger on the train, kills the engineer and stops the train again, allowing Chuncho and his gang to kill the remaining soldiers and take their weapons. Posing as a former prisoner of the army, Tate joins the gang, and is quickly befriended by Chuncho, who nicknames him "Niño".
After several heists, the gang travels to the town of San Miguel, where Chuncho meets with his old friend Raimundo to overthrow the weakhearted town boss, Don Felipe. Rosaria, Felipe's spirited wife, attempts to defend him; when Chuncho's men assault her, Tate angrily berates them for their behaviour. Chuncho shoots Guapo, a gang member, for attempting to kill Tate. Don Felipe is made to drive Chuncho and his gang back to San Miguel, and he is eventually executed.
Chuncho prepares to stay in San Miguel, drilling the villagers in the hopes of becoming a General himself; Tate convinces much of the gang to leave San Miguel so they can sell their weapons to Elías. Eventually missing his bandit lifestyle, Chuncho leaves San Miguel under the care of El Santo, his priestly half-brother, on the pretext of recovering a gold-plated Hotchkiss M1914 machine gun from his former gang. After killing one of them, Picaro, Chuncho resumes leadership of the others, hoping to sell the weapons to Elías before returning to San Miguel.
Elías' emissary arrives, but is pursued by army troops. Tate and Chuncho use the machine gun to decimate the troops, but at the cost of the lives of nearly all of Chuncho's remaining gang. Unseen by the others, Tate also kills the emissary. Adelita, Chuncho's last surviving loyal gang member, abandons the pair after her lover, Pepito, is killed in the battle. During the ride to Elías' camp, Tate falls victim to a malaria attack. While getting quinine pills for Tate, Chuncho finds a golden bullet among his possessions.
Chuncho and Tate arrive at Elías' camp the next morning, where they encounter several starving revolutionaries. Chuncho sells the guns and is paid five thousand pesos, before learning from Elías that the people of San Miguel were massacred by the army. Realising his irresponsibility, Chuncho allows himself to be taken away to be executed by Santo, one of the sole survivors of the attack. Meanwhile, Tate, from a high vantage point, shoots Elías and kills Santo before Chuncho's sentence can be carried out. Tate escapes as Elías' doctors pronounce his death: shot in the head with a golden bullet...

I believe he goes beyond that and becomes an anarchist. The image of the bread from earlier where a child is told to divide it equally amongst his family, reoccurs later when a kid is holding some coins and Chuncho says “don’t use it to buy bread use it to buy dynamite!” And runs off like a mad man. Chuncho had been manipulated by two ideologies and no longer believes in anything but destruction and anarchy. Anarchist in literature, art and film are always portrayed as madmen. That’s my reading of it.

Gian Maria Volonté (9 April 1933 - 6 December 1994) was an Italian actor, remembered for his versatility as an interpreter, his outspoken left-wing leanings and fiery temper on and off-screen. He is perhaps most famous outside Italy for his roles in four Spaghetti Western films: Ramon Rojo and El Indio in Sergio Leone's A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and For a Few Dollars More (1965), El Chuncho Munoz in Damiano Damiani's A Bullet for the General (1966) and Professor Brad Fletcher in Sergio Sollima's Face to Face (1967).

This film is a perfect testament to the skill of writers and filmmakers who understand the value of subtext to get your message across without beating the viewer in the the face with it. After all, it's a critique of USA's subversive foreign policy and tactics but within a damn good Western action thriller. Today's woke screenwriters and producers will never grasp this

I always loved the photography the best as well as the rousing music and the protagonists were never white hats - they were always motivated by greed or revenge. The violence or action is done best when its short burts after a tension filled drawn to breaking point showdown or a dirty trick like a shot in the back. No honour here.

I could feel Nino was up to something. He never told the full truth nor was 100% honest with Chuncho. He was hiding something and that golden bullet was the key. He had to kill someone, but it couldn't of been Chuncho. Throughout the movie he was slowly separating the group through decisions that would divide them, bit by bit. He used Chuncho as a puppet to gain his ultimate goal: "A Bullet For The General." (Elias)

What a crazy time it was too - student riots (which ended with a massacre in El Zocalo) then the 1968 Olympics. Then the World Cup in 1970. We climbed Mt. Popo and smoked its weed, camped in Los Llanos de Salazar many times (and in a cave above the fist hatchery that faced due west from high on the cliff face - beautiful sunsets). Lou castel (the american) and Gian Maria Volonte (the mexican) are just an allegory of capitalism and socialism, the great thing about this movie is that both characters ,the capitalist and the socialist, are tempted by the other side. The gringo felt compassion and true love for gian maria volonte, meanwhile the Mexican felt greed and wanted to be rich killing is own people. So this ain't a black and white movie with stereotypes, it's so well crafted and intelligent. At the end gian maria volonte shoot lou castel due to his disgusting classism, lou treated the poor Mexican in the queue like shit because he hasn't money and that triggered the revolutionary. Brilliant end, wow

Sadly, Hollywood no longer makes an American Western. When they try, they fail on all levels. It is a dead genre and has been since basically the 70's. The only choice we have left is to watch the good and not so good ones from "way back when."

This one is a couple of noodles up on the spaghetti western scale. Especially at about minute 45:30 when 'The Kid' demonstrates the proper way to assess whether a Mauser is a "precision one" as opposed to all those other ones.

A lot of Italian Westerns were filmed in Spain because the country resembled what film makers imagined the west to look like. Meaning that most of the extras spoke Spanish. To incorporate this (and to avoid have to dub over every extras) a lot of Italian Westerns were set in Mexico or along the Mexican Border
