A Bus Tour Through Dublin City, Ireland 1966

Take a trip with a Dublin bus driver through the streets of the city.
A journey along the quays, up to Christchurch, down Lord Edward Street, on to Dame Street, Westmorland Street and ending at D’Olier Street. Inspector Malone explains the training process and the qualities required to be a bus driver.
Many changes have taken place around Dublin since this programme was filmed. One of the more obvious changes is the vision of Nelson’s Pillar which can be seen from the junction of Westmoreland Street and D’Olier Street.
This episode of ‘Discovery’ was broadcast just weeks before Nelson’s Pillar was bombed on 8 March 1966.

Dublin was kicking in the 1960s - my favourite period of Dublin is from around 1986 to 1998 - Dublin was absolutely a cultural hub back then - Music venues, bands, bookshops, record shops, theatre and everyone creative was actually living in the city, and everything was ridiculously cheap and affordable.

1.40 onwards. They come in, in groups of 12 which we break down into groups of 3, 4 to each instructor. A lovely piece of phrasing.

Dublin is one of the few capital cities where if you are running to the bus stop, the driver pulls away purposely.

Looking at all the cars and trucks, it's remarkable that 95% are Austin, Morris, Ford, BMC, Bedford etc. all British made. Come back to Dublin in 1976 and it would be all VW, Fiat, Datsun, Renault etc. alongside some ford Escorts and Cortinas. The UK really dropped the ball in the late '60s and '70s as regards their motor industry.

Try walking across in a slow gentle manner with hat on headand paper in hand as a fully loaded bnus comes in your direction at full speed. The life of a buss driver is not all fun, she/he has to be on time for everyone, she/he has to give information and direction to all who ask for it, she/he must be kind and gentle, he/she must be alert at all times and never crash, he/.she can never lose their cool. he/she must wear a smile on their face at all times. he/she musty never complain or feel unwell, O the life of a bust drive is not all fun.

Except then the driver was cut off in his own little cubicle .He did not have to deal with Joe Public .There was a conductor to collect fares .I was in Bangkok recently again and they have busses approaching 70 years old .They have also driver and conductor .

Bus driver jam on the brakes whenever they like and dont give a fiddlers about the passengers.
