A/C Blower Air Doesn't Change With Selection Honda CR-V Video

In this video we explain a common issue with the Honda CR-V. When selecting a "mode" with the A/C blower the air only comes out of one source, possibly only the dash vents. No matter what "mode" you choose, floor, defrost, or dash vents, the air always blows out of only one set of vents. If that is the problem in your car, more than likely you have a bad mode actuator. We will show you how to diagnose the problem and fix it. Part was from Amazon, part number W0198-Z525196 HVAC Panel Mode Door Actuator - Compatible with 2007-2011 Honda CR-V 2.4L 4-Cylinder a.co/d/6bJU0FF.
Welcome to “The Stanley Way” channel where we will cover just about every project that a typical American family will encounter. This is not a “pro how to” channel, just an ordinary guy videoing his own projects.
Current and future projects include converting two bedrooms and a bath into a movie theater, installing a hybrid water heater, cleaning and painting the garage floor, building a mega shed, Kiwico projects, installing a hybrid solar panel system and many auto repairs.
We will also post videos of various DIY science projects, mountain bike rides, and whatever else we like to do.
You may learn something, you may not, but somewhere along the line you will probably laugh as Wes documents even his most embarrassing mistakes.

Just used this on my wife's 2010 civic. After complaining for a week that hot air wasn't going to her feet, only her head. I found this video! Took me 40 minutes to take out and put on all the screws in the awkward places. His steps are spot on. One thing I had to do is when putting the actuator back on, I was struggling to align the big plastic piece with the two moving knob pieces. I had to turn the car on, press the defrost only button so the two knobs reoriented to a spot the big plastic piece will align to easily.

Thanks for the great video! After confirming the mode door actuator wasn't moving properly I actually took it apart on the work bench (it can be opened by removing three screws and releasing about 5 clips ... it's OK if the clips break since the screws will hold it back together). Inside I noticed that the actuator encoder (spiral silver traces on the inside of the big gear) was quite greasy / dirty and the copper finger wipers that read the position on the encoder also had a lot of gunk built up on them. I cleaned the encoder trace and fingers with MAF cleaner (any solvent would likely work), reassembled, and the repaired/cleaned actuator now works perfectly. It seems the failure mode on mine wasn't a broken motor, just a dirty encoder that needed to be cleaned.

Nice video Sir. The only problem that I encountered was getting the cam followers (the back one mostly) back in the cam tracks. What I did was put only the top screw in at first, swiveled the assembly back and got it to go in the track. Then I put the front one in it’s track and installed all of the screws. Hope this truck helps.

Very helpful video. At first I thought I had the actuator lined up correctly, but then I realized I was not getting air from the center vents. So I loosened up the three screws and wiggled the actuator as I changed the mode settings until everything seemed to work properly when switching back and forth between modes. It was a subtle adjustment. Something must get "jammed" if the actuator isn't "dead on".

Question: what position do the pins need to be in when you install? And how should the alignment with the actuator be? Mine works when I use the first time is hit the switches, but then it stops. When I removed it from the pins it then works-as if the alignment is off. So frustrating
@TheStanleyWay
@TheStanleyWay Ай бұрын
@@pa4life there is no way I can tell you what position it should be in because the pins can move independently once the actuator is installed. What you can do is turn the fan on and move the pins to a known position. Example, move the pins until air is only coming out of the defrost vents. With the new actuator connected electrically, select defrost on the head unit. This will move the actuator into the defrost position. Now your pins and the actuator will be aligned for you to install the actuator.

@TheStanleyWay
@TheStanleyWay 4 ай бұрын
Thank you. No this is only the mode door which controls defrost, dash and floor vents. Does your CR-V have separate climate controls for the driver and passenger side? If so it may be one of those actuators. If not then it could be low on refrigerant. No A/C on the passenger side is a common symptom of low refrigerant.

Hi, I have a problem with the AC on a Honda CR-V 2.2 IDTEC, namely ... when it stays in place the AC works, but on the go no ... what a problem it would be ... thanks.
@TheStanleyWay
@TheStanleyWay 2 жыл бұрын
That is unusual but it can happen for a few reasons. One could be that the A/C is over serviced causing a high pressure in the system when the engine spins the compressor faster. This will cause the pressure to increase and when it gets too high, the high pressure switch will turn the compressor off. One way to check would be to run the car with A/C on, hood open, someone inside the car with the gas pedal pushed revving the engine to about 2,000rpm. Have another person watch the compressor. If the clutch disengages then you need to have the pressure checked with a set of A/C gauges. If the pressure is good then the high pressure switch could be bad. Has anyone added Freon to it recently? It could have been unintentionally over serviced. Some cars also have a cutoff at high throttle settings where the compressor will turn off if you hit the gas really hard on acceleration.

Is the "Dorman 604-340 HVAC Blend Door Actuator Compatible with Select Honda Models" on Amazon an equivalent part to the one you have linked here? I took apart the passenger side , changed the actuator and even found a lever out of its track so everything seems to be working fine…again except the dash vents. @TheStanleyWay
@TheStanleyWay Жыл бұрын
It should be the same actuator but may be in a different location. I am not familiar with where it is on your car but you should have a blend door actuator and a mode actuator. They should look similar to the ones on this video. Find them under the dash, turn on your A/C and change from heat to cold. If your car works properly and the air goes from hot to cold then the blend door actuator is working. Now, as you change back and forth from hot to cold, back and forth, find out which one is moving. That will be your blend door actuator and it is working so don’t mess with it. The other one will be your your mode actuator. If you select defrost, dash vents, below dash vents, etc. and it doesn’t move then that is the one that is broken. I hope this helps.

@TheStanleyWay
@TheStanleyWay Жыл бұрын
Does the blower actually slow down or does it seem like the airflow is redirected? If the blower is changing speed on its own it could be a bad blower resistor. Sometimes a bad resistor will only allow you to have full blower speed or off and other times it may cause you to lose certain speed settings.

If the actuator is working then the problem might be the actual doors or the arms that move the doors. Either could be broken. The way to check would be to remove the actuator and manually move the arms with the A/C on. If the air moves to other vents when moving the arms manually and the actuator works then the pins are not lined up with the cam properly. I hope you get it worked out soon.

@TheStanleyWay
@TheStanleyWay Жыл бұрын
If you know the fuse is good then it is time to check the relay. I can’t tell you where it is off hand but a quick search or your manual should tell you where it is. Normally there will be other relays that are the exact type. If you find one that is identical to the blower relay you can swap them and see if that works. For instance, if the horn relay is the same check the horn. If it works, swap it with the blower relay, try the horn again, if the horn works then the relay is good. Next it could be the resistor. Does the fan only work at one speed? This will normally make the blower only work on high. A resistor going bad is normally indicated by losing certain blower fan speeds. You can also check all the above by disconnecting the blower connector and checking for 12 volts with a multimeter. If you have 12 volts with the AC on like normal then the blower motor itself is bad. With an intermittent problem it will be harder to find but be persistent, you will figure it out. Other than those things it could be deeper like a control module but that is rare in a Honda.
