If you’re not a member you’re missing out… If you’re a technician, this is a must. Don’t be a parts changer… we’ve all heard that, but that’s the Motto here and the standard…. The best part is the explanation behind every diagnosis and it’s simplified plus VERY DETAILED ON THE PREMIUM CHANNEL. some times over the top which is the BEST. I’ve worked at shops that just change parts, with no reason and sometimes got it right but couldn’t explain why . I HATE THAT!! I love confidence and knowledge. Hi, Can someone help me? So I vacuum down the AC system and left it connect for a day and it seem to have lost 8psi (-22psi). I think it's a very slow leak since when I tested the system before Vaccum and it had a little pressure in it. So my question is if I inject the dye and then vacuum the system to load the Freon will it remove the dye from the system? Thx

You explained everything so thoroughly that a 55 yr. old woman like myself can follow along with how you diagnosed & pinpointed the problem. I have a/c issues & have been educating myself *before* taking my truck to the garage. At first I thought I just needed a recharge, but sadly it's looking more like a clutch/compressor. Oh well, at least now I won't be surprised. THANKS - Jax., FL.

Great job and explanation. The pressure/temperature relationship was good as pv/t = pv/t (Charles and Boyles law works) and I especially liked the use of the relay tester as well as continuity checks. Your vocation is not in auto mechanics but rather should be in teaching practical sciences or a vocational technical school, but the pay is poor. I use the emergency brake in addition to chocks and leave the wedding band off while working. You enlightened me and I appreciate the effort.

Awesome video professor. That key word "VARIABLE" is what haunts me in my head everytime I am about to make a call. That key word is what's transforming me as very well competent tech. That key word, once u are aware of the variables of the systems u are working with will prevent little to no comebacks. Thanx professor for all u taught us. Take care.😎

I remember doing hundreds AC system fitments and hundreds of R12 to R134a retrofits on brand new vehicles from Hyundai in the 90s when I started my apprenticeship, it was gravy work, my workmates and I figured out quicker ways of doing the job because of repetition, we also learned the basics operation of AC systems and all the components. Made big money from "time saved" bonuses and also got a head start on diagnosing because we knew what normal system operation should look like through repetition. Top work on the safety aspects in the video, Paul.

Very nice example!! Even Caleb is picking up the material!! This is so difficult to understand, and how it all works!! When I was a teen, a A/C tech neighbor had retired, but was still doing service calls, and used me as a helper. He tried to teach a young teen, some basic info, and he couldn't break thru!! I just couldn't understand it, and wouldn't listen! I went a different way! The hardest part for me, was understanding the idea that refrigerant boiled at -40 degrees!! I knew that water boils at 212 deg, so how could refrigerant be hot enough to cook pasta at -40, and how did that make me feel cold!! My weak brain couldn't get he idea! It just held me back for so long! It wasn't until I learned the basic principles of science, how it all worked! For me, it was the realization of what "BOILS" means!! Basic science! Boils means CHANGE FROM A LIQUID STATE TO A VAPOR STATE!! It doesn't mean that it will make pasta for us!! And when it changes,(BOILS) it absorbs heat!! So, the point that refrigerant boils, it absorbs the surrounding heat, and makes things around it feel cool (or scientifically, the absence of heat)! The rest I could fit together, and it all made sense to me!! The A/C system is just a controlled compression and then release of a material that helps absorb the excess heat, to make us feel good!! Great job, Scan!! And Caleb too! Thanks for sharing!! AND TEACHING!! AND ENTERTAINING!!
@teravolt61134 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and when the refrigerant level gets so low you hear the expansion device hiss behind the dash almost like a gas stove would, you don't get cold air anymore because liquid->vapor transition isn't happening anymore.

Excellent info! I loved the pressure readings explanation with regard to air temps. The $11 that I pay for SD Premium is well worth it. This past Saturday I saved a good $250+ by not replacing the fan switch (heater control module) on my daughter's 2012 Ford Escape that I bought for her on Friday. The previous owner told me that the 2 lower speeds didn't work & that his mechanic told him that the switch needed to be replaced. I put what I learned from SD Premium to good use & found that the switch worked just fine & it needed a $18 blower motor resistor. Now I just need to diagnose the lift-gate ajar light that won't go out. 👍

You are so what I need in my life. I have asked for a teacher that could explain things where I could understand what is going on. I just got my compressor changed in my car. And as soon as I did my water pump started to go bad. Then my car would not start, so I had to get a new battery. Then the battery light would not go off and I was told I need a new alternator. It has been a domino effect with the issues in my car and the mechanic I have can not explain anything except that the part is bad. I don't mind paying money as long as I can learn something in the process. I know that everything I attract is a lesson for me to learn. Now I have attracted you, a teacher that can help me understand these attractions so I can better my situations in life. I love the way you explain using visuals and in multiple scenarios . Your teaching skill is that of a master. I plan to join the Scannerdanner Premium classes so I can get more of your teachings. @3:37 me personally, I started taking that pressure/temperature relationship thing with R134a with a grain of salt after I had a Chevy Silverado once that had 100 psi reading on the gauges with the engine off, and it was around 100 degrees when I took the pressure reading. I decided to hook up the machine and recover the system anyway. It wound up being a good thing I did because despite having all that pressure, it only recovered 0.1 lbs of Freon/refrigerant. Could’ve wasted SO much time if I hadn’t done that first. Kudos on bringing that up.
@shieldcracker4 жыл бұрын
@Morley what SD says is correct as long as the refrigerant is in a saturated condition (liquid & gas present). In your case it's very likely that you had only gas in the system and possibly some air too.

Paul the top light is to tell you which post on the top is the power side of the load circuit. You take the switch and go to LED and if it's green or Red it tells you which top post is the power side of the load side which you accomplished with the test light which was the red terminal. Tells which post is 30 or 87 and If you'd have toggled the switch to LED it would have been glowing red. The LED will shine only when power & ground is present and the switch is in the LED position. Lets you do voltage drop testing & know what top terminal is 30 or 87 with just the flip of the switch. I printed the manual from the CD & have the manual shrunk down to fit in the box for when I have/had questions b/c I used to think the same about the load side light but it only lights in the LED position if there is voltage and a ground. Hope this helped Paul.

I'm glad I found this video. The first AC I worked on was badly wired to a toggle switch. Burned a lot of connectors and wires through the harness. Somehow even burned out the cooling fan relay and connectors. I traced any issue the ac system could have mechanically, then started on electric. Those harness are very hard to work through, they attach to everything. The greatest part of this job is its for work and the parts changer there won't admit wiring a compressor directly to stay on is a big mistake. Anyway I'm going on day 6 of rebuilding the ac and cooling fan systems. For the first ac I've seen everything on, this is an awesome learning experience as well as a huge challenge. Videos like this are lifesavers. And you make me look like I learned ac systems overnight. Thank you for this 2015 sierra 1500. And no, it's not the condenser lol 15:05

@@ScannerDanner that's why I enjoy your videos so much because I am trying to learn how to troubleshoot and diagnose MY OWN VEHICLE MYSELF. I'm very independent so whenever I started troubleshooting and diagnosing my vehicle myself . I would go to my favorite auto parts store and ask for a certain part, or tell my mechanic....hey i need this done.... almost every time the reply would be a how do you know who told you that. And almost act offended. so I stopped going and I started going to my local auto salvage and taking the parts off myself and putting them back on my car because if you take off the part usually figure out how to put it back on. at first I thought I was going to hate it but loved it cuz I felt like after I diagnosed and fixed my own car i started to enjoy my car more and even was proud of myself. but then I just didn't want to just fix my car I wanted to know how it works and why it works that way that way while I was troubleshooting and came across something that was not your obvious problem i could think outside the box and figure it out. I recently replaced my head gasket....had help......but i have a great mechanic friend who lets me do almost e everything and only steps in if im doing something wrong.

The best part I liked most about the video is that you were teaching your son as you were teaching us. Tell your son he is lucky to have a dad that takes the time to teach him, and you are lucky to have a son that wants to learn. A subscriber now, keep at it! 🤙🏽🤙🏽🤙🏽

Old video I know. Hope all is going well with Caleb. Very informative. I definitely had a front wheel drive roll right off the jack stand so the bit about the e-brake was gold lol

Great job guys - thorough, not hit-and-miss, one of the best videos on ac! So many killed underneath vehicles - always use chocks when jacking vehicle.

Love the vids Danner as I am an electronics/electrical tech and also power engineer. Love troubleshooting. I've had relays click also thinking one was good only to find it was still bad! Load side contact was screwed! New relay and my trouble was clear! Love the safety on jacking up the car. Too many people killed by not thinking! Cheers from Ontario, Canada!

Hi. Great talk. One error I noticed about testing the case of the compressor for power and not ground. Remember, the case is physically connected to ground all the time. You'll not read power there ever. The last evidence of power would be on power side of the "open" circuit somewhere between your wire test through the insulated electro magnetic coil, to where the end of the coil is supposed to be connected. Great explanation all the same. Thanks. Now I need to check my power to the coil itself and go from there.

You can absolutely read power on a case ground if the block ground is bad. OR if you had a badly corroded mounting point (junk yard engine swap) Of course you wouldn't be worrying about the AC compressor not turning on in that case lol, it would be a no start, no crank. But I want just being thorough in this one. I agree the case ground fault example I just gave would be slim to none. I have a few videos on this if your interested. Here is my "bad ground" playlist kzfaq.info/sun/PLAFYVCyenqcr32wgsCqa1Zj4335YlBF5p Or at least watch this one. It is only 4 minutes long kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r9qiltR-nd3dh2Q.html

I said it before and I’ll say it again. Thank you for taking the time to push safety with jack stands and using the e brake to hold the car. Also keeping legs/feet out from under the rotor. I see it way to many times.

my dodge durango 2004 AC stopped working and when the fans kick on i hear a loud tapping in the panel passenger side back by the 3rd row. When i bought the car i heard the rear AC didnt work but the front did. When i got it nothing worked. Also when i pull the cap off the low pressure valve it almost spits out tiny bits of liquid. You're a really good teacher btw. Your son is a lucky young man.

Thanks for the help I have a Mazda and the ac just quit with you're help and guidelines I can try and troubleshoot what's wrong with my ac I don't have all the tools for the job but maybe I can borrow some and see if I can just fix it I also probably over charged it thinking it was empty with one of those DIY AutoZone kits with the can attached to it the guy told me it took 12 pounds or so was wrong I put 2cans only takes 1,1pnds of the 134 a type but this helps me get closer to what the problem could be so big thanks scanner Danner today you the man 👍😉

I put the e brake on once to change a U joint on an F 150. When the drive shaft came down that truck started moving. I flew out from under it a hundred mph on a creeper. I was lucky the air hose was on the right side of the creeper and didnt stop me. The truck rolled all the way out the shop and into a lake. That e brake was a disk brake at the back of the transfer case that required a drive shaft to be in place to work.

It's a great video and thank you for all of your effort. I think what you failed to observe are the low and high pressure switches on the refrigerant lines which may not be on all cars. What I saw on another video is that the switches are not on the power side. They are on the ground side which allow the clutch to engage. And what I learned was that the high and low switches are actually opposite in there value. One is in the closed position with pressure, and the other in open position with pressure. They are the controlling factor to the clutch working by allowing ground to connect. It's all very complicated but I learned allot between that video and yours. Thank you very much boys!!!

On this system, those switches (inputs) would go directly to the computer. There are no high an low psi cut-off switches on the load side of the ac clutch circuit from the relay to the compressor (like older systems). So when I tested the relay and saw the computer was turning it on, I was no longer worried about the inputs. At that point, wire to the clutch, clutch ground, or bad clutch were my only options on this one. Does that make sense?

6 minutes in - Damn, he done drunk the Freon. Serious now - this is excellent , real time , tuition on the principle of refrigeration. It's about 9 pm on a Saturday night here in the UK , the AC on my Ford does not work and I'm on U tube to escape the enthralling (not) Saturday night TV. I've watched about the first ten minutes of this production and will come back for the remainder tomorrow.
