A/C not working on Drivers side? Here’s how to fix it! Toyota Blend Door Actuator Replacement Avalon

Here is a common issue on Toyota’s that makes it so the driver side only has heat and no A/C coming out of it. The electronic blend door actuator gets stuck and makes it so that only heat comes out! It is a super simple replacement and in this video, I go over how to fix it and also how to do a temporary fix until you get the part.

Just did this repair on my Lexus RX, they fail for everyone eventually. Quick tip, this unit controls temp, so when testing to see if it is working with a helper, run up and down the temp settings to see if it is functioning, mode settings like defrost and floor do not affect it, that is a different actuator on top of the HVAC box, which I hope to never have to swap out! Lol. Thanks for the vid!

I was dreading that it was the one, but I put a big cardboard box upside down with the passenger door open, laid out a blanket and a pillow to bridge the gap and was able to lay comfortable on my back under the steering wheel and see that the top one was working find with zero noise or binding. Hardest part was getting it lined back up and the first screw in. I took some clean shop rags and stuffed them between the actuator and the center console support and it allowed me to get my hand free to put in the screw. Love doing stuff like that, Lexus shop rates are not my favorite thing to pay for. Lol. During the pandemic I did the timing belt and water pump on it, it was rattling and weeping, you great guys her on KZfaq showed me how to do it with factory parts off Amazon and a high mass socket to let my small impact get off the "Jesus" bolt with no problem. Next I need to solve a speed sensor code, P500 that does not go away no matter what I swap out, did the one on the transmission and the front right wheel, but still have the error light.

Thank you so much. I removed the actuator and ops checked it. It worked fine. Checked the charge and that was the ticket ! Recharged and $50 later I need a coat ! Hard to find the low side port, It is below the dip stick. Remove the top cowl and the access is much easier. Win!

No part number. Went to Amazon and ordered it. I had taken mine out so I just compared mine to the one Amazon had for 2011 Avalon.

Should be part number. All parts have part numbers. Also, theres 2 blend door actuators so want to make sure get the right one. Thats what im looking for

Dude--that's amazing! I've been troubleshooting A/C issues since last summer. Blend door actuator was next on my list. After watching your vid, I disconnected the wire harness & voila: Cold air on the driver side! Thank you, thank you, thank you for saving the day.👍🏼

Great Video! I checked under the dash while adjusting the temp and could see the actuator working fine but still have ambient temp on left and cold on passenger. Gonna change out the cabin filter but have a feeling that won't change it since it shouldn't matter *** Saw your comment below about removing the actuator and moving the door manually to see if it changes things. Possible the gear is off by a few teeth... maybe? lol. I'll give it a shot

UPDATE: so removing actuator made no difference so I put about 18oz of a 20oz can of r134a into the system and NOW I HAVE COLD AIR thank god! I'm going to try this in the morning. Was melting last two days with drivers side blowing hot air. So bad that it was cooler with windows down 😂

Thank you, My Lexus also has dual climate controls and the vents suddenly stopped changing, dash to floor to windshield. I will check that blend door now that I know what to look for and where it is. PS I usually order from Rock Auto.

Your problem sounds like mine. I’m stuck on dash vents and some floor when switching to floor only but dash still discharges air, no defrost when front defrost on. It looks like my blend door actuator is working properly. Was your problem something different than the blend door actuator?

The issue I have is my heat is working fine on the driver side but cold air on the passenger side when using heater. What would need to be fixed in that case.

Take it out and manually activate the blend door with the blower motor on. That’ll answer your question!

@@tunerworld I figured out the issue was low refrigerant charge. Only the passenger side of the dashboard would blow cold air. Driver side warm air.

In an effort to restore the ac on my 1999 Avalon my mechanic replaced door actuators last summer. Now my heat is not as strong on the driver's side. I feel it blowing just not as warm as before. Any suggestions?? Thanks for responding

My Toyota Auris 2011 with dual zones, got similar problem. Hot air on driver side, "cold" on passenger side. My mechanic said they could see that it was the mixing valve, guess its the same as you mention in this video. He could see on their computer that it didnt close or open as the others. But he said he had to tear down the complete dash to change it. Called Toyota in Sweden, they said the same. Also gave me a offer, 1500-2000 euro. 😮 Is there other "internal" parts that can be messing with my ac or just this as shown in the video? Because doesnt seem too hard to fix if you got some knowledge, not 1500 euro exactly. They said it would take them 2 full days to tear apart and put together again. (A mechanic takes about 100 euro/hour)

On a Toyota, make sure to only use Dexron ATF! Usually it leaks from a clamp or hose! Once in a while it will be a power steering rack :)

Had the same issue. On the actuator gear there is a square spot that lines up with a notch in the corresponding gear. You’ll need to adjust the thermostat to get the actuator gear’s square spot in position so you can have it able to line it up. You’ll be in an awkward position laying in the car but you can move / rotate the other gear part to get it to match up with the actuator.

I have a single zone temp. My car was not blowing any cold so I bought refrigerant in a can and recharged. I got it to right at the green about 30-35 psi. I still had more in the can but was afraid to overcharge. Had a loud hissing sound and then all this smoke looking like thing came out but it was more like spraying out refrigerant from the pressure. At that point I was too afraid to add more. I used one big can 20oz and smaller can 12oz. Passenger side does blow cold now but not driver side. Do you think it’s still not enough refrigerant or is it the blendoor actuator. But again my car is not dual zone so I’m unsure what it could be.

Its another one of the door blends. One controls heat and ac, one controls where it blows out. The other one is the harder one to change

My Avalon is a 2016. Drivers side ac blows hot. Hubby switched out the blend door actuator but it did not fix the problem. Any other ideas @TunerWorld

Prob the wrong one. Theres 2. Or possibly just got a defective one. Happens way too often these days. Especially with cheap parts

I took the blend door off but it still is not cold. It wasn’t moving when AC was on . Passenger side blowing cold. Driver side is warm.

Not too hard but you pretty much have to lay on your back and have a helper to get anything you may need. Most important as was mention elsewhere here is to index the gears. There is a notch on both gears that MUST line up when you install the new motor. Not too hard.

I changed my actuator and mine still blows cold on driver side. Blows cold while I’m driving. When I stop blows hot again on driver side.

@@_NEW3RA_ so once the actuator is off, you’ll see/feel the gears on the vent door side. You should be able to manually move those to see how it reacts with your vents. It’s a bit tricky and I wish I recorded myself installing the actuator back on the car as there is a certain specific way it goes back in. But I would try that first to disgnose

Great Video but actually my blend door actuator on my 06 Avalon actually works (when I look at it and raise it to heat it moves like it should vise versa) but my AC does blow much colder on passenger side 😩 Any ideas anyone? Thanks

Do you have dual HVAC? It should be pretty similar unless you just have a general AC problem

Usually 2. One controls whether is blows hot or cold, the other control where it blows out
