A Calif. Zephyr in Ft. Morgan East bound on 13JULY2024

The first of a "Two-fer" this morning finds California Zephyr #6 arriving from Denver at 0518 MDT (9 Hrs. & 2 Min. late). P40 #817 & P42 #146 brought the reverse order running train to a stop with car 3 (Coach class) to the parking area platform for 1 departing passenger and 1 new fare headed to Omaha. A conversation with the patron's spouse about why the train are so late was held with a discussion of heat (sun) kinks and slow orders for that issue as well as the derailment in eastern Nevada which caused a detour for the Zephyrs and other Up trains around that site.
With the station work safely completed, the high ball was given and on a clear signal at east Ft, Morgan CP, the #6 Zephyr was underway for its next stop at McCook, NE.
Thanks to the operating crew for the greetings this morning.

It's either kinked rails in the summer or broken rails in the winter, depending on what you set the track up for.

Good Saturday morning Mike! I got interrupted about 3 minutes in watching this and am back to finish watching this after 2 hours. Sorry! A podcast had to take priority. This was another late runner. I saw they were running way late on the Amtrak app. I’ll wait for the number 5 to come through if you haven’t already posted their run through Fort Morgan. Have a great Saturday anyway! I am. Good afternoon, Mark; I thank you for looking in and the comments. It is 86 f. at 1122 MDT. Still headed for the triple digits. The heat dome is firmly set above us now. I'll be sending it east in a day or so.

Okay yeah that makes sense. You know the derailment and I'm glad that you explain the heat situation. Cuz when they get too hot they expand and when they get too cold they contract. You know we have to always remember that with the rails and the roads. Extreme heat and extreme cold affect everything.

The explanation of the fencing that gent uses is just like the rails. I'd hate to see the shrinkage in winter conditions. Take care and stay safe!

Good morning, David; I thank you for stopping by along with the comments. I think that mess has been cleaned up. Tomorrow I will see the same scenario with different players. That #6 dropped an engine and had to wait in Sacramento for a replacement or rescue motor. I don't know if we will see 2 or 3 powerplants tomorrow. #5 will get here a little after 0800. It is messing up my breakfast time. LOL! Take care and stay safe!

How nice to see 2 CZ's at a time & I forgot to thank you for # 5!.I learned about the tracks coming back home on the Flyer when the train slowed down to a creep & someone asked a conductor if a train was ahead, hot & cold but you know how I feel about delays on a train, short of a derailment..How do the wheels stay on.When I was visiting my brother, I could not get him to take a day trip on the Cresent & back .You certainly are an awesome person for AMTRAK.!!!👋👋

Hi again, Carolyn; Thank you for looking in as well as the comments. Heat or sun kinks happen here but not like they do in Nevada for some reason. It seems that UP tolerates the conditions out there. Just get every train to slow down and tread lightly. LOL!

Caught this one after I saw the westbound #5, Mike. These twofers are confusing me! A quick stop for #6, and off into a hazy sunrise! Someday, things will get back to normal! Things will have to cool down a bit, before that can happen. The "Sunset" and the "Chief," through AZ, are being hard hit by heat related slow orders through most of their routes. My planned trip east, next year, is in the fall. I'm willing to bet that Amtrak will be adjusting schedules to compensate for heat even that late in the year. The NWS long term forecast, as well as the Old Farmers Almanac, are calling for above average temps well into Nov. Take care, and I'll check in tomorrow.

I wasn't going to take up a lot of room on the SD card with idle time that I did not know how long would last. Otherwise, it would have been just one of #6 and one of #5.
