Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered, a sword day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor! With that he seized a great horn from Guthlaf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder. ~ J. R. R. Tolkien, Return of the King

@@fragwagon Today I was looking for the Narnia movies after watching a recommended video about a scene where Aslan shows up with the sun rays behind him. It's this scene where there are broken chains on a rock. Laugh all you want, but I simply teared up at how majestic that shot is. I am not a super fan of narnia or anything, but it is such a coincidence you mention Aslan under my comment on a video about christian artists. I am an artist and I somehow got to the Aslan = Jesus representation earlier this morning. There is a scene where he says something like "In your world, you will know me by another name", so when I saw the other video with the majestic scene I instantly made the connection. Just beautiful. Thanks a lot for your reply!

I have recently returned to the Church (thanks in no small part to you and Jordan Peterson). For the first time I have felt my capacity to create art has true meaning. Like you, I have return to church largely due to JBP & JP. Jonathan’s remarks on the artisan part of “art” really shifted my thinking. I took art all through middle school and high school, but never pursued it other than as a hobby afterward. Some thing that always bothered me was not knowing the point of what I was creating. Jonathan revealed to me that there should be a point, in other words there should be a use for what you were making not just making for It’s own sake. I could never get the motivation to make some thing just to do it, but now I’m thinking what can I make that has use and feel much more motivated and inspired.

As a traditional painter, coming back to trying to be a good Catholic, and trying to orient my art in the right direction, I feel this message, and it came on the right moment. I hope I can achieve this "redirection of the light" through my work, let something beautiful and meaningful in this world so we can still look for the right path in life, that is Christ. Thank you for the message Jonathan. Good work for you and every artist seeing this. God Bless.

@@donetsvapetrunki1623 There's meaning in struggle, but when you've struggled to make the cure for cancer and no one believes you, it's sort of disheartening. When you say "Hey give me $1000 and you'll never have cancer, or if you do have it, it will go away" people easily dismiss you. Granted, the world is full of shysters and con artists. I get it. But my question is where are the risk takers? Where are the people who will spend money on something with no guarantee of a reward because they think it might pay off? It's like they don't exist, or I can't find them anyways, so they might as well not exist. People will tell me I haven't proven myself, but that defeats the idea of being a risk taker. If I've already proven myself you aren't gambling on me. Not to mention that at this point I've easily put 5000 hours in to the story I'm working on, but when you tell people that they just move the goal post of "prove you work hard" to something else. People keep claiming that they are starving for good stories, and then refuse to pay for the story artisans to bake up some delicious stories. I'm going to keep working, but I'm wondering even if I do get my story out there if it will actually matter to anyone given the kind of reaction I'm currently getting.

@@Helltown66 life has so much meaning and beauty, yet many modern artists tend to portray the world like it’s meaningless and ruined. Our universe is certainly not without a creator. ‘Everything’ does not simply appear out of nothing. Even the greatest chemist with the best lab can’t produce something out of nothing. Artists were always the ones to express these topics with awe and wonder.

I've been making cartoons at Télé-Québec for the last five years, with the last three years in story development. I've been trying, in my small corner, to undo the unconscious patterns that work to unravel the sense of delight and mystery in the stories we tell children. Your videos, and your brother's book, have been great tools (and guardrails!) in helping me craft stories that invite meaningful participation. TQ is of course, careful about overtly Christian material, but I am keeping my ears open about a potential opportunity to invite you to speak about meaning and art to a Québec audience (if you think it good). Thank you for all your work, Jonathan! May the Lord bless you.

I wrote this poem before I saw this video, but I think it needs to be shared. The People Who Looked Up Again: This eerie grey so stale and white like bathroom tiles in muted light Awake to calls of birds and friends my crumpled sheets their tattered ends the silent glow of backlit keys call forth my words and echo thee my Lord, my Lord my Lord, I - I cry within but speech is false my patience thin and mocking voices haunt the air and tumble down till naught remains but ash and silence type tapping tales of trying times I tire of ticking clocks and twisted rhymes white bone and skin white etchings in - the stone to dust whence I have been these souls hold dear to them what's warm in lucid bleachers raise applause to games of earth of mice, and men, to games of dearth of voids and sin I stand below above behind and speak to truth my battered mind I stand in front beneath aside and utter forth that second climb that mountain top that iced white air that moisture crushed and capped ensnared like arrowheads to heaven pointed this world our gift to us annointed the blood of Jesus Christ was real but thought and science must reveal what once was found but now is lost that stolen truss that held us up and left us sheltered from the rain that came to aid and soothe the pain and comes from life that cannot stay she enters in the spectral realm our ancient lands to her belong a time and space to us prolong the aeons pass the people ask: "What happened to our sacred song?" this silent foe that creeps below the surface of our balls and toes an undercurrent ground in naught a sliding snake a rancid thought attempt to crush and break and spin foundation walls we're housed within no light will pass through e'ry window: the grime and soot, climb up the frames, and damp our screams with feathered pillow these clouds of grey too seldom seen drive all desire to intervene with life's first choice life's only promise forgotten words forgotten solace. I long for truth for black, for white, this eerie grey this neutral fight it saps us of our will to grow and leaves us all without our sight and so I turn to you and say beware the witches of the day the truth they warp and twist and curl to benefit their earthly ways no word is safe, no language sound no voice is freed from haunted ground if forces dark must be unfurled in dying light I raise my sword I don my helm, my steed, my valour and fight against this deathly pallour my will is steeled, My steel is will My blade will rise above the fields A flaming brand to him alone the people rise from under stones a symphony of dying men the people who looked up again.

This is the conservative christian's dilemma: Their preferred version of Christ already rocked the boat, and was certainly correct to do so because he was God. They don't express the foggiest notion that a thing happening today may require a similar defiance. And so The Swamp never gets drained, dogma festers for generations, The Afterlife becomes a more important 'court of cosmic justice' than the courts that you actually have some influence over in _this_ world. Because Jesus already won and conquered death, why make an effort about THIS life when your place in the next is so "assured" by scripture and ritual? Bottom Line: You snooze, you loose - no matter how wonderful or beautiful that Bedtime Story was.

He talks about the great exitus and reditus of creation - the going out and returning which is the Prodigal Son, the saving action of Christ and the pattern of all creation. It is also the pattern of the liturgy, and when we safeguard this as artists we battle against the whole neo-Gnostic technocratic onslaught of modernity.

This is very encouraging. Listened to it twice. Beautifully articulated. Am starting to learn that me verbally telling people that something is wrong or harmful can tend to offend them. Jesus avoided that so often by telling stories. When people are functioning on a high level you can explain things and they will understand. But when they are not ready for that kind of teaching, then art - in it's many forms - is the way to the heart.

@Sean Blakely are you trolling? Oh my goodness, I think you are! LOL! But hey, Hollywood and Burbank have been using stories to create social change for a long time. Also, have you ever tried to caution a teenager away from doing something dangerous? Anything that works is a gift.

Wow... I’m at a loss for words. I’m an artist who’s been really struggling lately with what’s going on in the world and have been thinking about what ways I can go about bringing others to Christ. I’ve put this off for a while because of fear of what others may think and I don’t like the thought of being judged for being “a Jesus freak”. God brought me this message today and it shook me to the core. We as artists need to stop caring about what other people think of us and start to express Christ though our paintings, poems and music. The art community is unfortunately filled with radical leftists, atheists, and new ageism and it’s scary to be different, at least for me. But it’s time to take on the heart of a Lion and praise Jesus through our talents. Thank you Brother, for sharing this wonderful message. I never knew until today how much I needed to hear it.

Your visage appearing was like looking in the mirror. The image manifesting in my mind all week was the creatures cackling as they tied Aslan down in the cartoon from the 80s. Thank you for your strength, Jonathan. Comfort comes in the strangest places. Am reading the Bible again for the first time in many years.

Bendiciones! (Saludos desde Argentina)
