Hey folks - a few recurring questions so I figured I’d pin some answers: 1. We calve out +/- 400 head 2. There are two of us working together (The other guy is pretty camera shy 🤣) 3. We calve in March/April so we can be ready for seeding in May and calves are a bit heavier in the fall when we bring them back into the feedlot

Growing up on my grandparents farm around Lethbridge I remember calving very well. Many a night my grandparents had me on calf patrol. At the time it wasn't my favorite thing to do, when I look back on it now, it was some of the best times of my life. I think you're videos are great for folks who don't know about farm life 👍

@ThomasG77 Oh man, ain't that the truth. It was the best time of my life and I didn't even know it. And my grandmother's cooking, heaven. Always fussing over me, making sure I was dressed warm enough, making sure I got enough to eat, and then some, homemade sewn socks, I sure do miss those days.

We had a dairy operation in Cape Breton back in the 60's. I remember a calf head and foot showing. Had to push everything back in and get that other foot. Then we had to pull the calf because the cow was tuckered out. I was about 12 or 13. After cleaning up and we were going back to the house, in the dark I cried very quietly so the adults didn't hear me. I guess it was the relief of saving the mother and the calf. You brought back a great memory for me my friend. Thank you.

Aaaahhh the bitter cold, barn coffee, and sleeping on the hay stack...I'd like to say these are fond memories...well, some were. I do fondly remember when the farm expanded and calving was done in two-man shifts. Easier on the body for sure...accept for when we started farting around on the stacks and hurtin each other...still, it was fun. I remember one of the amorous steers getting loose one year, and we had a Christmas Eve calf! Of course, we had to name him Jesus (Mexican accent). Squirrely little buggar! Good luck QD>

If the citiots knew more about Canadian farming and food standards maybe they wouldn't be so against it. Canadian grown food has some of the highest standards in the world and some of the happiest cows too. The folks they should be grumbling about are the ones cutting down the rainforest for palm oil and soybean fields. Not only are cows good to eat and hang out with, they play a vital role in maintaining the soil and grasslands. A grazed field will capture more carbon as it regrows than JT generates in a weekend and that can be done multiple times a year. The manure can replenish nutrients to the soil that grows the plants that grows the cows. It's a wonderful ecosystem that farmers tend so that we can eat too. A loving relationship with the land will never be a bad thing. Keep up the good work Quick Dick!

I feel your pain, lol... Our gilt decided to have her babies right at the onset of a nor'easter with a low that night of -13°. We're completely off-grid, so I had a couple ideas on how to keep the babies warm: I had made sweaters out of old wool socks, but they didn't stay on; I also had our baby generator set up with a heat lamp, but even with the lamp lowered right to the ground, it wasn't making much of a difference at all, plus the baby genny was going through a tank in under an hour! In the end, all I could do was just make sure that the nest was deep enough and cross my fingers that the little ones would make it. I made video, but still have to edit, splice and upload - I wound up with 55 minutes total over the course of that whole night, so got a bit of trimming to do!

omg...I love baby cows....so sweet. I distinctly remember watching calves being pulled, I was fairly young and I am sure that today....most young people wouldn't be able to handle it. I think there were cats roaming around and everything. It was an experience for sure....I think people today don't have a clue about farms and what happens...they just assume all animals are treated bad.

I remember when I was a young man and I was helping a local dairy farmer when I could, when one day I stumbled in on a first-calf heifer trying to deliver. The calf was coming out head first instead of front hoofs first and needed to be pushed back in far enough to wrangle the front legs forward inside the uterus. Not having a dairy farmer’s forearms, I got tasked with the job. With sleeves rolled up to my biceps, I got lubed up and in I went… both arms, elbows deep. As I told the farmer what I felt, he told me what to do to correct. I don’t remember what those instructions were from 40 years ago, but I will never forget the pride I felt getting the calf aligned properly without tearing the uterus or snapping the calf’s legs. The poor heifer was so exhausted by that point, we had to employ the manual puller to get the calf out. All ended well. One of those experiences I hope I never forget.

Thanks for the peek inside your operation Quick Dick. That is a lot of cows. I live in Ontario and keep goats as a hobby. We tried our hand at breeding last year, I watched every video I could find on goat birthing to be better prepared, but in the end nothing went like it was supposed to. Results were good, we ended up with some happy healthy babies, but I did have to get elbow deep more than once to make it happen. Not my comfort zone! I guess cows are not phased by precipitation? Our goats can't get in the barn fast enough when it rains or snows.
