In this episode I arrange East 17's 1994 Christmas hit "Stay Another Day" for three part choir (SAB) with piano accompaniment, and I explain what I do at each step of the way!

Knut, I’ve shown some of your videos in my vocal classroom. I’m trying to motivate my vocal groups, which are quite large. Unfortunately, we’ve students whom were, essentially, dumped in our choir, because of option limits. They cause problems due to a lack of interest. I like to do a cappella arrangements and gospel pieces, which fit well into the history of this community. Currently, we sing in 3 part, until I can establish more foundational theory. Do you have any suggestions for simplifying the process?

Hello Robin! Thanks for your interest in my videos, and I'm honoured that you chose to use them for teaching! :-) Are the groups you're working with children and teens? I find that younger children tend to be fairly easy to get involved as long as the music is entertaining, but it can be difficult to get teens involved in choirs if they don't already have a culture of singing, such as in church, as it's an awkward time in their life! They're already going to be quite self-conscious due to changes in their bodies and brains, and singing makes this sensation even stronger. Boys also have the added hurdle of having their voice break and sound completely different from what they're used to! I find that choosing the right material is important, as you want to choose something that doesn't feel childish, at least not until they get more comfortable singing on a regular basis, and as a group. Otherwise, having a regular routine around it and treating it as a formal lesson will also help; if you're taking it seriously and expect good stuff from them, it sets a bar that they'll eventually get used to. But don't get me wrong, it's difficult, those who actively don't want to be there will most likely be disruptive, and I don't think there's a quick fix, unfortunately... Anyway, regarding simplifying the process, what I'm doing here is very "formal" arranging with a written out piano part and fixed structure. If you simply work out the chord progression for the accompanist to improvise an accompanying part over (and some will even just learn the song by ear from a recording), you can get a lot of mileage out of simply arranging choruses in block harmony (ideally triads with the melody in the middle if you're going for a gospel style), and having verses performed in unison. If you have some confident singers you can also have them do the verses as solos, backed by block harmonies on oohs and aahs from the others, and this can be worked out fairly easily. If you don't have an accompanist it'll be a little more tricky, though not impossible! Essentially, the more intricate and detailed you want your arrangements, the longer it'll take, but "throwing together" a block harmonised arrangement of a song you're already familiar with doesn't have to take very much time! ;-) I hope that's helpful; sorry for the long post! Let me know if I'm being unclear!
