My skin reacts so badly to L-Ascorbic acid. I thought I was totally allergic to chemical sunscreens but turns out it was my vitamin C (good molecule) powder. So I totally avoid anything that has vitamin C advertised on the label. I honestly don’t see any difference other than my skin loves me without it.

Yup I feel ya. It used to work for me, but it’s so hard now that I use a stronger retinoid. My skin does NOT like the pH change (quite possibly related to my AHA struggles tbh) And there are some really great alternatives to C as a whole, for sure!

I really appreciate this video. The way you delivered accurate scientific information in a simplified layman manner, it’s refreshing and non-intimidating. Not everyone can do it. Can you do a Kbeauty version? I’ve noticed many korean brands make use of fruit extracts and label them as vitamin C containing (and yes they smell citrusy). I was wondering if the western/european brands are better since they have “legit” vitamin C? Huge fan btw. Always watching your videos ❤️
@AliceintheRabbitHole
@AliceintheRabbitHole Жыл бұрын
This is such a great question that I wish I had addressed in the video! So extracts that naturally contain vitamin c do contain ascorbic acid. The problem is that it’s impossible to say how much is in the extract itself, much less how much is in the final product. So what’s great about buying a product that adds vitamin c in a standardized form is that you do know how much it contains (or at least upon manufacture!) So a 10% L-AA serum contains 10% L-AA. While a 60% orange extract serum contains L-AA, but we don’t know how much!

Thank you for making a difference btw theory, in vitro studies and in vivo studies. I would still add one more level, scientific consensus. That is, there is a body of evidence that is seen by scientists as scientifict proof of a fact. I feel that in the skincare community a lot of people talk about things that are just a theory or backed by a couple flimsy industry studies as fact and fail to make the above mentioned distinctions. I feel that we, the skincare nerd community, have either fallen victim to marketing and/or are afraid to admit that most claims concerning so called active ingredients are not based on scientific consensus. We can never ever be sure whether an active ingredients in our OTC consumer product does anything at all. Even if its efficacy has been shown in several studies we still don't know if that efficacy transfers into a product with a completely different vehicle and mixed with other ingredients. Not admitting to this is lying to ourselves. And admitting this isn't that horrible. I think we all survived this video. 😃 We can still enjoy our skin care, try our different ingrediens and get excited by a theory or study about an ingredient AND remain intellectually honest. This video was an example of just that. Thank you!

Oh definitely. It’s interesting that there are a handful of creators who are pushing those kinds of questions. Until they do, it seems most want to go along with popular opinions. And I get why! Who wants to state “hey there isn’t a ton of evidence for this ingredient in this popular product” and have a bunch of anonymous angry replies lol. Shoot I watched that happen with a brand that rhymes with the Slinkey Mist (🤐). They were getting QUITE experimental for a bit there… Thing is, it’s great if those products are giving people great results. It doesn’t invalidate stating that we are lacking published proof of efficacy. Those two concepts can simultaneously exist!

Hi Alice! I gotta follow up question for ya. It has nothing to do with Vitamin C...I don't think so anyway. I've been experiencing something lately, flaking skin ...just on my eyelids. Both the kids and more-so in the crease and brow bone. the rest of my face is also struggling, but in a different way. My eye lids have never been particularly oily, or dry. They have never been sensitive either. But in the past 3 weeks they have begun flaking. Last year I told you about this crap and you suggested using an eye serum...I chose the one from Good Molecules, Yerba Mate. It was fine. Honestly I'm starting to think it's the cold wind where I live, that is causing this. Cuz here I am again! I cleanse, serum, then run my heavier moisturizer over that. Let everything sink in for about an hour. But then I go to apply my makeup, and as my shadow brushes are applying ( and I do use very soft brushes and not aggressively) the skin on my lids starts flaking or peeling. It looks so dry and honestly, terrible. I'm so confused. What's going on here? Do I need moisturize the skin more? Or do I need to use a chemical exfoliant, to help loosen and shed the skin that CLEARLY doesn't want to live on my lids!!!??!! Maybe a combination of both?!?! And to top it off, I have this magnifying mirror ( who in the heck thought this was a good idea for women) anyway, I noticed on the rest of my face, it's almost the opposite problem. In the winter my 51yr old skin is mostly dry. Right now it's dry AND congested, I think. In this horrible magnifying mirror I can literally see sebum collecting inside ( and on top of) every pore on my face! And now,vi can notice it even in a regular mirror, specially on my T-zone. I though about perhaps Derma Planning...with one of those tiny razors? But to me, that seems like it's not really "cleaning" the pores, right? Again.... possibly a chemical exfoliant? Glycolic perhaps? Please advise me Alice. Flaking eyelids and dried sebum extruding from my every pore, is not a pretty look. And I'm not trying to break the bank by purchasing 6,000 products, when I don't even know what type of product will help address the 2 issues. Love the green look today btw.

Ooh I’d be really careful around your eyes! Hmm since you did try eye cream and that didn’t help, tbh it sounds like you might want to see a derm? I definitely understand how you could buy product after product and end up not solving the problem - so while a derm is kind of pricey up front, it might actually save you $$ in the long run. Especially as it does sound that this might be a bit more of an advanced problem (kind of the inherent problem with skin care products: they’re rarely made to “solve” issues and moreso formulated to “prevent”) Sorry I can’t help more but that does sound difficult! Hope you’re able to get to the bottom of it!! 💕

Very informative! I thick knowing the difference in the types of vitamin c as well as being aware of your skin type helps an individual know what products to try. I have to say I've gotten the best results from the Sunday Riley. I really like the CEO ceremony as well as the CEO oil. I just got finished with the neogen real vital c serum. I don't have any issues with acne but I didn't notice my skin looked very even-toned. I like that one because it's got a high percentage of sodium ascorbyl phosphate and citrus extracts. So are you basically saying if someone has a kuduku plum vitamin c serum its effectiveness would be low?
@AliceintheRabbitHole
@AliceintheRabbitHole Жыл бұрын
It’s hard to say with certainty how the final effectiveness could be (as every product has multiple factors going on), but most likely: if a brand is saying “3% kakadu plum for vitamin c!” then it’s almost impossible to predict how much actual vitamin c will be in the product. Certainly not 3% though! It does seem that CEO is very well-loved! It wasn’t my favorite, but I still understand as Good Genes was my Sunday Riley love (way back haha, when I could still love AHA ingredients 🤣)

I like that serum! It’s very true that there are PLENTY of antioxidant options out there (though the perk of vitamin c is the hyperpigmentation/anti-aging benefits …and the additional detail there is that it’s not the only ingredient that addresses those aspects) I wouldn’t count on extracts for vitamin c as there’s no way to predict how much vitamin c is in the final product

@@AliceintheRabbitHole Thanks for the answer! I think I'm quite happy with the protection from the sun the serum provides, while dealing with hyperpigmentation with other ingredients.

Would it be crazy to add bubble vit C and an L ascorbic acid 15% product in the same routine, same day, same morning? I have combo skin, acnee prone, a little sensitive. Could I? 😅

i used to buy full size c firma and i got MONTHS under their projected freshness date. the new formula that you mix. i thought it was my fault, so my second one, i kept in the dark, always closed (despite airless pump), etc. and it happened again. just a word of caution, as it is pretty damn expensive. i think i get 2 months out of it. any comments welcome!

Which OleHenriksen Vit C is best? The Banana Bright or the Truth Serum?

Totally different products tbh. Banana bright is more for brightening, truth serum is more for evening skin (and I would say preventing acne, given what we know about SAP)

4:58 I'm confused because skinceauticals on the bottle says that their serum still works even if it looks darker than how you bought it??
@AliceintheRabbitHole
@AliceintheRabbitHole Жыл бұрын
Yes! So that’s the tricky part that I didn’t know if I should go off on or not. But basically, L-AA can end up converting into quite a few different things. There’s a so-called intermediate (dehydroascorbic acid) which can be converted back into L-AA in the skin. The catch is, that can convert further into irreversible byproducts, and it’s those byproducts that can be a problem. It’s also impossible to say things like “if it’s yellow, it’s ____”, “if it’s orange, it’s ____” because of all the other factors involved in the full formula So for me personally, I feel comfortable still using that aged serum I showed…for now. But at a certain point, even the more stable Skinceuticals (that’s the aged product) is likely to degrade, as nothing lasts forever. And I do wish we were able to get more clarification on exactly when that is no longer safe to use. Hope that helps sorry it’s such a long explanation!

Vitamin C is an odd skincare ingredient for me. I don’t know why, but I’ve tried multiple serums and they all cause these little red pimples in areas im not prone to breakouts. And then go away when I discontinue using it. It happened with the de, the Dennis gross sample I just tried. So maybe it’s the active version. I can’t remember the others I’ve tried cause I gave up on vit c years ago. I’ve always wondered if there was an actual alternative that fulfills a similar niche in the daytime routine. But nothing really comes up.

So... based on the hair I was sure you were going to hit on my vitamin c pet peeve which is basically the equivalent of the "Retinol Complex 3%" scandal. Why do some (especially but not limited to "natural") brands mark their products as "X% vitamin C" when you look at the ingredients and the only ingredients associated with Vitamin C are things like Kakadu Plum Extract/Oil? We know that depending on the plant, time of year, ripeness, etc. the actual extracted vitamins will vary significantly. To be honest, if I see something marked as a vitamin C product and the only thing I see in the back are plant extracts I totally write off any vitamin C element of the product and just assume it's a varying strength antioxidant serum (which for me is 99% irrelevant because it won't damage my skin or add value since I have tons of antioxidants in my routine already). While on a rant, I do question the science on any of these derivatives actually converting to l-ascorbic acid in the skin. After all, I never start smelling like hot dogs throughout the day, which is all the evidence I need that nothing's happening... (yes sarcasm on this paragraph).

@@skynebula11 Kakadu Plums are green and I am presuming from the intro where she introduced herself as the plum that the hair was an intentional choice. Kakadu plums are also a very common ingredient used in the "natural" vitamin c claims. Edit to add: It is worth noting that the plums contain a much higher concentration of vitamin c than oranges, so if you're going to use a plant as your source it's not a bad one to use though I still wonder about the efficacy.
@AliceintheRabbitHole
@AliceintheRabbitHole Жыл бұрын
Haha yep, some brands use kakadu plum AS their vitamin c, which I totally agree with that pet peeve. I think there was even a scandal with either Mary Kay or Avon trying to patent kakadu for skincare, and infringing on the rights of indigenous Australians (where it grows). I really think the under regulation of skincare is a huge problem. Companies can pretty much say anything they want to, and their chances of dealing with repercussions are low. 3% of a plant extract that contains vitamin c truly does mean absolutely nothing 🤦‍♀️

Do you have any other recommendations for SAP vitamin C? I’m not a fan of olehenriksen and I don’t like the container of the mad hippie (bc vitamin c degrades faster when exposed to light and air). I want to try the bubble one really bad but it has benzoyl peroxide in it which I can’t use because I’m using adapalene 🥲 other recommendations greatly greatly appreciated
@AliceintheRabbitHole
@AliceintheRabbitHole Жыл бұрын
There’s no benzoyl peroxide in the bubble serum 😃 although if you are interested in Mad Hippie’s, keep in mind that SAP is far more stable than L-AA, so the packaging is less of an issue. I prefer pumps myself though (mostly because I’m clumsy and have dropped droppers so many times at this point 🤣)
