Found in one corner of the defences of Carcassonne is another row of towers and walls, which makes up the Chateau Comtal.
Continuously added to and enlarged throughout the Middle Ages, this started life as residence for the lord of the land and eventually grew into the self-contained stronghold that can be seen today.
