That green dress! It's the first thing I think of too. I enjoyed Atonement but what I remember mostly is the "feel" of the book, so I know just what you mean about it not being particularly memorable. It's so great how you make time to revisit favorites. I don't do that enough even though I always enjoy the new discoveries rereading unearths and how they deepen (usually!) my appreciation. I just learned of Maigret in a June article in the LRB. I think the universe is telling me to add him to the list. The setting of Bitter Orange sounds similar to that of The Animals of Lockwood Manor, which I have just begun and am really enjoying. As always, so many tempting titles! I've added just about all of them to my list.
@MirandaMills
@MirandaMills 4 жыл бұрын
I used to hardly ever reread books, but I find I enjoy rereading much more now! Or perhaps it's just that I'm getting older and more forgetful haha. Maigret books are slight but brilliant - I do recommend giving one a go! xxx

A great selection of summer reads Miranda, many of which I have read and enjoyed myself although you have inspired me to want to re-read some of them. This Summer I enjoyed re-reading ‘Rebecca’ by Daphne Du Maurier and ‘The Glovemaker’ by Ann Weisgarber. I am definitely going to put a couple of those I haven’t read from your selection on next year’s list! It has been lovely to have a catch up and I am already looking forward to seeing you again with more news, Teresa

We moved from the City of San Francisco CA to the Bluegrass of Kentucky just in May. We also couldn't house hunt in person etc, so we had to move without any house to move into, and lived with the family until we found a place in a very competitive house market. We found a delightful 130-year-old place after only two days of looking in person. I desperately need bookshelves! I wonder what guidelines you use when having one maid. We might need to do such. I'm so happy for you and your mum, to be living in Yorkshire! One of my dear friends from my 3 years in Scotland, was from there, and she has the most lovely accent! The way she'd say that I was so "cuddly" in her native accent, was enchanting! I hope you are both very happy there.

The greengage summer sounds lovely, I will have to look into picking it up. Funnily enough I did a video on my channel recently where I spoke about classics I want to get to soon and both the go between and Tess of the D’Urbervilles were on the list! But I still haven’t got to them but this video really entices me. Particularly towards the go between. I have recently read a Mollie Panter Downes and adored it!! So will defiantly have to pick this one up, she has the most wonderful writing style! Also I haven’t picked up any of the Maigret books but enjoy watching the tv series with Rowan Atkinson, so perhaps i should look into starting the series :)

Great to see you back and recommending lots of books to add the the TBR pile. I really want to read British Summertime Begins. Sounds wonderful. My top summer picks have been finally reading The Cazalet Chronicles and some of the Dean Street Press books. A House in the Country by Ruth Adam was absolutely brilliant and seems apt for a move to the countryside!

I re-watch some of your posts (this one obviously) from time to time. Re: Atonement ... I haven't read the book, only watched the movie. I absolutely agree, I cannot take it .... the ENDING. Ugh. As far as the movie, I am surprised I have been able to go forward and watch Saoirse Ronan in anything else. Such are my bad feelings toward her character. It is comforting to have my feelings about this story voiced.

So happy to see you back, Miranda! Thank you for all these brilliant recommendations - will definitely follow up on those I haven't yet read. I too disliked the ending of Atonement. To me it seemed like a heavy-handed conceit under the guise of "metafiction." I really enjoyed listening to British Summer Time Begins on BBC 4's Book of the Week. I too am a fan of Ysenda Maxtone Graham. Loved Thomas Hardy as a teenager so it would be interesting to return to him as an adult. This summer I reveled in a close and leisurely reading of Middlemarch (following along w/Emily Rhodes' webcasts) and am now getting back to contemporary novels and essays. Finishing up Coventry by Rachel Cusk right now and then on to the latest Anne Tyler and Zadie's Smith's Intimations. Looking forward to more of your videos! xx

Completely agree with your Atonement comment! I've heard such good things about Rachel Cusk, but I haven't tried any of her books yet. I can't decide if they'd be very 'me' or not. Are you a fan of her writing?

I totally agree about Atonement also the ending bothers me as well...and I also really dislike the younger sister Briony, which yes is young and naive, but at the same time I feel at 13 years old you should know most of what is right from wrong especially about lies and making up things that are just not true, like accusing someone of something so horrible when in fact it was someone else, and then don’t get me started of what Lola, the cousin ended up doing towards the end, I mean that’s who you decide to marry really?? I also really disliked the ending but I also realize it’s a realistic book where it highlights that injustices sadly happen all the time and we don’t always get a satisfying ending...idk if I would recommend this book though bc i really disliked Briony and I don’t think that she reached a real atonement for her wrong doing, because atonement means you reach a real reparation for a wrong and she definitely did not repare it
@MirandaMills
@MirandaMills 4 жыл бұрын
I didn't find Briony a very likeable character either! And yes, what happened with Lola annoyed me too and somehow just seemed so unlikely.
