I drove from Kansas City to the Outer Banks of NC a week ago and had my FT5D w/stock antenna attached to the A-pillar in my vehicle. It easily picked up CB Channel 19 the whole way, while my Uniden SDS100 w/GPS was scanning police dispatch frequencies and auto-updating those freqs based upon my current location. I had the B side of the FT5D scanning the FRS/GMRS freqs at the same time and wow - the United States has a TON of GMRS repeaters out there. Most of them are configured to transmit their callsign in morse code at set times and I heard a lot of them in 3000+ miles of driving. And yes, I have my FT5D "configured" to transmit on FRS/GMRS in the event of an emergency. Whenever I travel I just take the FT5D, SDS100, and my Icom IC-705 with me.

That's what I like about the Yaesu handies the wide RX, when you mod them some models will TX above 470 MHz so can use on the (Australian) 477MHz UHF CB band (not really legal) but handy to have the ham bands and that in one radio. With a telescopic or long wire antenna they perform quite well on the SW bands. You should be able to select FM on the SW bands, the VX3, VX5, 6 and 7 can and I've just done it on my FT3DR.

I agree, ham and CB on the same rig is great, A person can start on CB, get their amateur licence and use the same rig. I know a lot of old school hams have a thing about CB but they forget that the CB craze of the late 70s saved the dying amateur hobby at the time.

I agree, I started in CB as a teenager in Los Angeles in 1976, and since I lived next to a major freeway interchange, started immediately doing REACT rescues (well before the Road Ranger programs). This got me into aircraft avionics repair with the USAF including the UK at RAF Bentwaters (Ipswich). Didn't become a Ham until 7 years ago but it definitely was the beginning. It looks like a fantastic Radio Andy and well done on the video. Opening up the radio is the same process on my FT70D a small resistor to chip away on tbe back to allow TX on PMR446. I have to say though the only thing that lets down Yaesu radios is their reluctance to support DMR... Yaesu is adamant in putting their own C4FM Fusion on all their digital radios (In a similar fashion to Icom with D-STAR) and thus not supporting DMR makes it not ideal as a scanner due to the vast majority of commerical communications using DMR... It's the only downside to what appears to be a amazing set.

I have to carry an additional radio to get CB, and if YOU were hurt and I managed to drag you to the highway, you might appreciate the ability to get help from one of the millions of CB’s going down the road. I think most people who want this capability have little interest in being on the radio at all if not required. I certainly won’t be ruining any bands….better things to do with my free time.
