What does it mean to be a “human lighthouse”? A human lighthouse is what Steve Pemberton calls someone who has touched and impacted your life, someone who has fought for you and saw a new beginning for you. In his talk, he urges us to be that human lighthouse for someone else, and shows us that gratitude, and the ability to be grateful, are superpowers we are all armed with. Steve Pemberton is the best-selling author of "A Chance In The World", a memoir that recounts his triumphant life journey and drive to become a man of resilience, determination and vision. He is also working as the current Chief People Officer for WorkHuman.
Previously, Pemberton served as Global Chief Diversity Officer at Walgreens Boots Alliance, the first global pharmacy-led, health and wellbeing enterprise in the world. Before his post at Walgreens, Pemberton was the Chief Diversity Officer for Monster.com where he helped the company achieve all-time growth in applicants. He has earned national recognition for his commitment to others, including the Trumpet Awards and Horizon Award by the U.S. Congress. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Mr. Pemberton. I watched Tamron Hall this morning . I was taken back with joy and even more humility listening to you. I just finished listening to your story and again , I am deeply humbled. I am crying tears of joy. At my work place unfortunately I am surrounded with co-workers you aren't accustomed. with compliments and positive speaking. So therefore I have been labeled as phony. Lol. But due to consistency, many of my coworkers find themselves complementing other's. I indend to order your books and watch your footage. I am excetionally happy to have been blessed today with your enlightenment. Plus I am going to gift my daughter's and siblings your books. Thank you so much

I saw the movie last nite. Thank God for your witness through the tool that helped you survive (books). Though it pained me (a former CPS worker) to see how the system failed you, it delights me to know that because of your lighthouses, you finally spoke up. May God bless and keep, because your witness will help other similarly situated children.

While flipping channels over the weekend I paused and begin to watch the movie staring Terrell Ransom Jr., Lawrence Hilton-Jacob and Kelly Owens. I found myself in disbelief how much this kid went through. I wondered if he would live through it so I watched till the end. Being more intrigued about it being a true story brought me to here and all I can say is WOW!!! Thank You for being an inspiration in more ways than one.

I caught the last half hour of Steve Pendelton's movie where he was adopted into a foster home, and was mentally, physically, and verbally abused by his then adoptive mom, and her son. At first glance, i thought it was going to be, just another one of those boring movies. But the more, and more i tuned in, the more, and more touching, emotional, and deeply it got. Really incredible, and a powerful movie, which is based on a true story. For the life of me, i can't remember the title. but i will recommend it to the 🌎 to watch. It's about Deception, degradation, satire, i could go on, and on. But it's definitely a must watch!

Fabulous Movie 🎥 and what Steve and Tonya are doing is absolutely wonderful. Both my parents did unanimously things for children and college level students. unfortunately they were killed while making monies for those efforts. They were killed Feb.6,1999 as innocent victims of a high-speed police chasing a stolen vehicle in Eureka, CA. They were known as BASEBALL BETTY & COACH BILL BAYICH. If I'm ever given the godly chance I'd become a sponcer for foster children. I raised 4 boys too manhood and they are WONDERFUL people. This movie touched my ❤ and gives my mind the reason I'm still here on this earth. As I was supposed too be with my parents in their vehicle that night. But I was not for unselfish reasons. God bless Steve and Tonya.

This movie is indicative of many true experiences in the foster care system. I was amazed and happy to have found a movie based on a true story and meet via the internet the man which the story is about. The violence and abuse that occurs in the lives of many are far more intriguing to me than the fantasy videos put out by those who I have nothing in common with. There are many positives in the life of a child. This movie showed the silver lining of reading stories to escape and excelling in school in spite of a hostile home front. The school system rescued young Pemberton and gave me Hope before getting to the end of the movie. Actors wer all superb & Fred Williamsons cameo didn't hurt ;)

That's the downside of the story . But the upside of the story is that this dude's sharing can be a catalyst for more scrutiny and improved choices within the system . No more "letting a warm body park at my place for the money" . That's what I see .
