Such a great video! I decided to grow dahlias after seeing your success last year. I planted calendula in-between the plants after I noticed the earwig pressure and ta-da! I actually planted them as a "trap crop" but they brought in hoverflies, ladybugs, and other great beneficials and saved my dahlias this year! I don't use any type of insecticide as the whole point of my garden is the bees. I grew up in the south and know all about that red clay! My grandmothers used cardboard under their vine crops to keep the red at bay. Atlanta Georgia suffered an ice storm in 1973 (I was 13) that shut us down! That was a crazy time! Thank you for sharing your lives and this sit-down chat! 💗

@@GardeningwithCreekside I had a local gardener here in Tennessee who writes gardening blogs etc. tell me that Calendula would not do well in our heat and humidity. I'd like to try that between the dahlias. I do get earwigs some, not a crazy amount, but I also get white flies pretty bad and sometimes slugs but I use a feed and treat for the slugs that works wonders! Thank you ladies for doing this video. Loved it! Been watching Laura and Aaron for over a year and started watching Gardening with Creekside when Laura mentioned you garden in my zone! Woohoo.

I am from central NY. and we get snow. When I was in the Marine Corps stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. for 3 years we got a couple inches of snow and I did laugh. There was a pickup truck with 2 guys in the bed with shovels salting the main drag of the city. This is just what I've been waiting for, too bad the guys didn't mic up. You were talking of married 15 - 20 yrs. Ann and I have been married 36yrs. this Dec. and it just gets better with age. You talked of gardening as you get older, well I'm 55 and didn't get really gardening until 3 yrs. ago, and I am so excited about it all. This year I planted our retirement orchard with 28 fruit trees. Age slows you down but the love of gardening is still there.

I am from Wisconsin and have often traveled to the south and I don’t see a difference. People are welcoming, friendly and we like those from the south, we enjoy our visitors and go out of our way to make them feel at home. It’s easy to meet new people and strike up a conversation. Living in the South, I noticed while staying in Montana, their roses had no yellow leaves or black spot. They used them as landscape plants at the hotel. Beautiful! I can grow roses. They look good in May and early June but after the humidity, heat and rain, they become very high maintenance. July brings the Japanese beetles. The deer strip them also. Yes, Laura, roses and dahlias are harder for Southerners with so much rain, and humidity.

I'm growing roses for the first time (I don't really count the 'Therese Bugnet' shrub roses I've grown for years) and seeing those awful Japanese beetles defoliate my David Austin roses and apple tree was so frustrating here in Minneapolis. I'm hoping they go in cycles and next year we won't have them as much. I think my neighbor attracted them with one of those hormone bags. Hopefully, I convinced her not to bait them.

@@Edu_Kate I don’t think it matters.. I tried not baiting and had worse years but if her baiting is close to your plants that may be the issue. I know I moved the bait to the farthest part of my lawn and away from things that Japanese beetles liked and they seemed to do much better.but either way was a struggle. The black spot drives me crazy! It’s so humid and rainy lately. Ugh!

Most of my mom’s family have farms…..mostly agriculture…..8-10 acres each….12 brothers and sisters….but of course where their houses are have landscaping….just love to see how other people keep their spaces….im trying to convince my sister to develop a small 2 acre area into cut flower developing….these videos are great for ideas and business trends…..it’s so much fun ❤

I love that the 2 of you are just sitting and talking like you've known each other for ever. I've lived in many states in my life from Florida to Nh. I live in the Seacoast of NH, tell Arron that this year we had around 23 inches of rain this summer alone. It's wet, humid and summer is never long enough. but truly enjoy both of you ladies.
