I have this exact chromebook and it's an incredible value for the price. Both USB-C outlets are actually full service, so you can pipe HDMI out of either one. The speakers are also astoundingly clear and loud for the price. It also has Linux support built in, so you can play light Linux-native games like Shovel Knight if you want and the battery is about 10 hours fat. Unfortunately the screen is just barely sufficient, but that hasn't stopped it becoming my main office computer considering everything else on offer.

I have a Lenovo Flex 5 with Intel i5 processor, 8GB RAM and 128GB NVMe storage and a Lenovo Duet Chromebook / Tablet with MediaTek Octacore ARM processor and 128GB storage. I typically run MZ64Plus 64 FZ (N64 roms), Magic DosBox(Dos Graphics adventures, Zork Grand Inquisitor, Return t Zork etc.) , GBA.emu (GBA, GBC & GB roms), and OpenMicroWave(OMW) emulators on both. The Flex 5 clearly has the performance edge and is the fastest Chromebook I have owned to date. I use OMW android app to run Elder Scrolls III - Morowind, and offers great graphics performance, but you really need a touch screen for this app to work well, which both these Chromebooks have. Both these Chromebooks will also support Linux apps, but the Intel based Flex 5 works best, since more games are compiled for the Intel Vs ARM processor, but the situation regarding ARM is improving. I also have Steam installed in the Linux container of the Flex 5, which works well for older games. The Duet's one advantage over the Flex 5 is being ARM based, and there are slightly more native Android games that will run on it compared with its Intel based sibling. Unfortunately, neither Chromebook will run Minecraft android version as it blocked for download from the Google Play Store. This is not due to compatibility issues, but just the developer Mojang / Microsoft being difficult, as I have sideloaded the Minecraft android app and it runs fine. The Flex 5 will run the Minecraft Java edition in the Linux container, and this runs well, but you need to configure crostini for mouse pointer lock via chrome://flags. I have never tried RetroArch android, so will give it a go. I know it works well on Windows machines, so hopefully can port across some of the configs to reduce the need for scraping. I feel Lenovo currently offer some of the best performance Vs value Chromebooks compared with other brands. The Flex 5 and Duet are great Chromebooks with this regard, and it looks like the Lenovo Chromebook 3 continues that trend.

Fun fact: you could use a GameCube adapter and connect it to a Chrome OS AKA Chromebook and play games that way. As long as you have GameCube controllers in an adapter and a freaking mindset of someone who has use Dolphin Emulator for a long time, you'll figure it out. Steps on how to do it Step 1: connect a gamecube adaptar (+controller) to your chrome OS computer. Step 2: go to settings and click Gamecube input Step 3: click gamecube controller 1 and press emulated Step 4: click each individual selection of inputs then match it on the controller If done correctly it should work perfectly as if you were on a gamecube console.

@@DigitalIP x86 processors are in another class compared to ARM. It's not even a contest. ARM can gain some ground by very meticulous optimization, but frankly, no one has time for that. These use an extremely low end x86 processor and it leaves even high end ARM cpu's in the dust.
@hugevibez3 жыл бұрын
@@rich1051414 That's just inherently not true, due to the smaller die area and thus efficiency gained from having a reduced instruction set, you actually gain speed over cisc architectures like x86. See: Apple A14 or Amazon Graviton2 performance and efficiency compared to similar x86 chips. Especially the latter just utterly destroys the competition, even Zen3 probably believe it or not. The problem is, phone chips target much lower power targets influencing the microarchitecture design, since even if you can save 0.1w of power, then that's a massive gain on these chips. It has nothing to do with them being ARM/RISC chips however.

It's crazy if you think that the x86 processor needs a built-in emulation layer just to run ANY android app, then the gaming app itself uses its own emulation layer to trick the CPU into thinking that it's a game console. So, if I understand it right, for every single key press (command) there has to be two "translations" to the processor, and two "translations" back...and it still performs well :)

Can that/Chromebook cast to a TV, or is it HDMI, only? Also, will it wake, with a P/X button, when connected to a PS3/X-Box 360 controller, via Bluetooth? Also, can you boot a different system, the way you, personally, often use a microSD Linux build, or boot up, from a flash drive - using at least piOS? The last question isn’t so integral to an idea about how to use one - for which one would close the laptop, which would in turn put it to sleep, presumably until it receives an input signal, such as a keyboard or mouse click, or a controller home or other button, while the machine is still closed, which would hopefully work as I’d had my mid-aughts MacBook, which I’d mainly accessed my media server, to play content, but would use this setup idea to minimize the space around which the Chromebook “dock setup” of cables, if necessary, there (i.e., by casting from some other place, nearby. Then, I could also use it as a portable gaming emulator, and etc., for doing quick tasks, or surfing the Web. For $99, there’s got to be a really good way to use such Chromebooks, if for no other reason than being a laptop, with screen (of course), which would seem to be better than an old desktop, a RasPi, or an Android tablet, to also use like an Android tablet, with Play Store access, for much less than a similarly-equipped Android tablet... Thanks so much, for the video. You always have great ideas... 🍻

I'm all in favour for new stuff. But first off, we rarely have such offers in Germany, and second: a 130 might also buy me an used 4th Gen core i5 laptop with a bit more power. But as always, it depends on the market around you...
