In 1976 I asked my wife to marry me at this show. 44 years later and 6 grandkids later, we're still going strong.

That was a great night. I kinda felt sorry for every other show coming into town. We all knew it was a walkover for Chorus Line (9 nominations, 8 wins). And it was sort of a stratospheric peak of acclaim for gay life in New York (seven years after Stonewall, five years before the chasm of AIDS opened beneath our feet): We (in our secretive mask) were the rulers of Broadway, and if not there, where? and if there, everywhere. It was heady. And the joy at the end of the show was ... palpable.

Just got chills watching this. That ending when they're holding up their resumes speaks volumes about the life and experiences of people auditioning for broadway. Cool performance - thanks for posting!

I saw A Chorus Line for my 13 birthday, a lifetime ago, and have watched many versions of different songs from different revivals, the movie, university theatre groups, and every version except the original falls very flat on many levels. This is called Musical Theatre, not musical theater where we can kinda hear the music. The music must inspire, drive, push the emotions, bodies and spirits of the performers to live in real time the lyrics they are singing. And it is not just the original score that gets composed but also the arrangements. This version, the original Broadway cast on youtube, lives, breathes, and are the the total embodiment of the lyrics that they are singing. Too many times performers today get stuck simply singing notes, or dancing steps, they forget to create real human beings, reacting to the surrounding environment around them within the written/musical situation that was created. I felt, laughed, cried, and became very excited at many points during this number. The purpose of theatre is to make a person feel, think, and live thru the eyes of the characters on stage. Many Broadway performers today should watch the Musical Theatre Actors from before Andrew Llyold Webber and Aids, and maybe learn many things to bring unto the stage to really give the audiences their moneys worth.

When I was touring and we were teaching the repertoire to the new dancers we went to see this on Broadway several times after Bhaskar was injured. I still cry every time i watch this number.... We used a lot of hankies in the theatre, too.... This cast.... so many memories - so personal.

I couldn't agree more. The other part that just gives me chills is that final iconic look of the dancers with their headshots in front of their faces. Every actor knows exactly how that feels.

watched this a bunch. What I love is all the individual dancers having to halfway do the dance correctly, making intentional mistakes throughout. fascinating and unable to stop watching.

For example, the guy with the headband. He has to deliberately keep remembering to duck his head as his character has been instructed on stage _not_ to do. Likewise, Kelly Bishop as Sheila has to keep almost doing the step right, then getting messed up by the person in front of her but not _quite_ enough to end up running into them.

we're learning this in my dance class at school rn. when i first watched this show, i honestly thought i'd never be able to do this dance, but having some experience under my belt now, it's quite do-able :)

I took a Broadway dance class last semester and this was one of our final dances we learned. The way we learned dances was the director would show us, slow it down, dance it with us, and then we'd test the following class. Honestly, I never had any issue picking up this dance of all the dances. I still can do the broadway choreography of God I hope I get it!!!:D Swear by that class.

I don't think any cast could top the original cast. Case in point - Donna McKecknie as Cassie - no one can outdance her when she was in her prime. I have never seen a touring company that could touch the sharpness and speed in this opening number. Such great memories...

instead of waiting for it to come back on broadway, why don't you propose for it to come back at a community theatre near you? with all that ambition, you'll be a shoo-in for the lead (though i'd go for sheila) ;-)!!
