A Christmas Carol With Ronald Coleman 1941
Review by: albertatamazon
"Carol" was recorded in October 1941, and released in November of that year, a sobering thought considering the fact that Pearl Harbor was soon to be attacked, ushering the United States into World War II. "Pickwick" followed three years later, in November of 1944. Both were later included on a single 33 1/3 RPM LP, one of the most popular Decca albums ever made, selling well into the late 1960's. The LP version of "A Christmas Carol", however, omitted two characters (the charity collectors) heard in the 78 RPM version, and that moment has not been restored on this CD. (Ferdinand Munier, who played one of them, is erroneously credited as appearing on this album. He does not.) The sound is quite good, especially for recordings made before the age of real hi-fi, though, of course, it is not stereo.
Both stories are beautifully done. In "A Christmas Carol", renowned film actor Ronald Colman stars as Ebenezer Scrooge, and while he would have seemed miscast if he had ever done a film version of the story, he is quite excellent on records, his beautiful voice not only acting the role of Scrooge, but, in a very imaginative touch, narrating the story to the listener in character, as if Scrooge were reminiscing about his misspent life. He makes no attempt to sound "old", but is nonetheless completely convincing - better than Laurence Olivier is in his recorded version (and I, an Olivier fan, once never imagined I'd say that).
A further testament to the excellence of this production is that, although it is only twenty minutes or so long, each actor convinces completely in his role, and the story never seems rushed, because director George Wells has known exactly how to edit it. The supporting cast includes few familiar names, although all were noted screen character actors of the period; the most familiar names are Hans Conried (Captain Hook in Disney's animated "Peter Pan") as the Ghost of Christmas Past, and Gale Gordon ("The Lucy Show"'s Mr. Mooney) as a speaking Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come.

Thank you so much for posting this! I have listened to this recording since I was a child, first on an lp record and then a cd. I’m without a player this year so I was so happy to find this. It made my Christmas Day!

Just came across the album in the garage and, not owning a record player, decided finally to look for it on KZfaq . We grew up to this voice and this story every year. We loved the Alistair Sims version on television, but listened to this in the dining room on the hi-fi and loved it, too. Thanks for posting. I'm sending the link to my sister.

We grew up listening to this every Christmas Eve. My dad first had the 78 rpm records and then the LP. We learned later that they cut two scenes from the 78’s to fit it on one side of a LP. This version is the complete recording as was on the 78 rpm records. It was always hard to find the LP as Decca had it out of print for awhile. The Lionel Barrymore version was only available. I found the 78s on EBay and now have both versions.

Thank you for the memory. My family would play the 4 record set in very fragile 78 rpm every Christmas season from when I was a small boy up until I was a 17 year old in the late 60's. The 3rd record in the set was broken at that time by a playful cat jumping on an open Hi-Fi destroying the spinning platter. Replacement of such a record was very difficult until the advent of the Internet. I did buy a replacement but the playing quality was very poor. KZfaq is the perfect venue. Thank you for sharing.

+duke927 It was re-released as an LP record in the 1950's, and made available through the 80's. It featured Charles Laughton reciting another Dickens tale, "A Pickwick Christmas" on the flip. Certainly your family could have found a copy of it at a record store. But still, we can all hear it now through KZfaq!

I have the three 78-rpm records, six sides in total. My mother received the set as a Christmas present at her workplace, years before she married my father in 1953.

After our 78 RPM album of this was ruined by a careless 5 year old (me) My Dad bought it again but this time it was the LP record pictured above. I remember bringing it to school (3rd Grade) and our teacher played it On the day of our class Christmas party. That was in 1963.

We weren't aware of the re-release thinking the 78 was the only issue. If not in a store right at hand you could only look for it in a catalogue you kind of had to know it existed first.

Is this a shorten version? I hated the fact the newer CD used the shorten version. Growing up in the 60's and 70's my Dad would play the family the four 78 rpm record set every Christmas eve. I grew to love Colman's voice.

This is the full version, the shortened one is missing Scrooge's meeting with the solicitor and Scrooge seeing himself dead in bed. The 33 record I had was the shortened version, I never got to hear the full thing until here on youtube.

Ronald! I also recommend CD "A Child's Christmas in Wales" read by Dylan Thomas. Caedmon, Harper Collins, whatever. And a DVD of same produced by WTTW-Chicago starring Denholm Elliot (spelling). Great that Barrymore "A Christmas Carol" is on youtube. Is it on CD? Will search. I listened to the 78s as a kid in early 60s. TV was and is over-rated. Happy Holidays everyone!
