Well, just leave it up to Keith to tell a story. He has the perfect voice for it. Great animations as well. I really liked it...

This story gives me pause, because of something an old woman did to me on my eighth birthday. She wasn't much taller than me even though I was a child. She wore a headscarf and walked with a cane. I was playing in my front yard, when she paused & called me over. She grabbed both of my wrists and after hurriedly looking at my hands, she stared at me and said, *"You have thirty three years and three days on this earth and not one more."* I never saw her before or after that encounter. I have long since passed every interpretation of her words and I am still here. I've often thought about the old lady and wondered what made her do that to a child. Hearing this story, made me remember my own similar story with its happier ending.

I think Keith found a real nice point about it being about technology. "Precision" time-keeping was a new thing back then. Just the idea of a person being able to tell to the minute what time of day, was not a normal feeling. People were suddenly much more connected with each passing day. I think the story plays on that new idea in people's heads. The person in the story thought it was over, because he had survived his birthday, so he thought, but his mother birthed him so close to the end of the day that only this new technology would give the average person the ability to distinguish it. (and perhaps if he had known, could have escaped death from the old women) Time keeping is a pretty weird technology when you think about it, and I could totally see this story being used to scare children.

It is interesting to try and see some old stories in the context of the time, and see how many really are about new technology, even incidentally. We laugh at a bite by a radioactive spider today as "quaint". Frankenstein was the magic of electricity. Even (and this is secondhand, as I've never read the book), Dracula is apparently about detective work using the new technology of "indexing stuff". (Please add to this or correct me if I'm wrong. I see this as an invitation to discussion, and am happy to be corrected.)

"Three times nine and twice three your age shall be" Was the old lady mathematically inclined? Was she a school teacher who taught kids the multiplication tables? Why can't a ghost in these stories just come out and say, "Sorry to have to tell you this but you will only live to your 33rd birthday. You may not like hearing this but it'll help you prepare. Carpe Diem, young man."
