This story was based on the actual childhood experience of the screenwriter, who was also a popular radio personality in the 70's. I remember listening to him at night, when he would riff about anything and everything. He is also the narrator of the movie.

Yep. From the story collection called "In God We Trust (All Others Pay Cash)" by Jean Shepherd. Hard to believe, but Peter Billingsley (Ralphie) is also the guy who worked for Obadiah Stane (Jeff Bridges) in the first "Ironman" movie and gets yelled at ("TONY STARK WAS ABLE TO BUILD THIS IN A CAVE!!! WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!!") and also in "Spider-Man Far From Home" as Quintin Beck's (Mysterio) assistant. His head is shaved so it's hard to tell.

One of the things I love about this movie is that it doesn't favor either of Raphie's parents against the other. They both have their flaws, yet they also come through for Ralphie in their own way: Mom waved off his fight with Scut Farkus (and his torrent of cuss words while doing so, especially so soon after he dropped the single F-bomb while changing the tire) as no big deal, while Dad got him the Red Ryder when everybody else was against it.

It's not Christmas unless I watch this movie. So many memorable moments. I still say if Ralphie and Schwartz had run to the window with the rest of the class it would have made them look less guilty. Cuz staying seated means that you don't have to look outside, you already know. And the fact that they were the only two still at their desks was not lost on Ms. Shields, priceless.

My dad was born in 1940 and when this movie came out it was the perfect movie to him. He loved this movie. He grew up in this era listening to the radio and wanted the Red Ryder BB gun too. We watch this movie every year and love this movie. Even better this movie came out as a Broadway musical. The touring Broadway company came through here in Utah in 2019. I usher at the theater that it was at and watched it twice. It was even better than the movie. The musical part they do for the lamp was hysterical. My dad is gone and at the end of the musical when the little boy was in bed and the narrator was remembering his dad giving him the BB gun. I cried remembering my dad talking about getting one for Christmas. It was a beautiful memory for me too.

Thank you thank you thank you! This is my ALL TIME FAVORITE Christmas movie. I grew up watching this movie LONG before it was popular and iconic! I love it so much because my dad would always commentate about how accurate the time period was when he was a kid in upstate/western NY. And now that his kids are grown he tells us about pretty close it was with us (his kids) growing up. How "simple" and "easy" life was. Simple families living simple lives. Walking to school in the snow. Being bundled up to go outside. It's not the movie itself, it's what it means to my family. Even though it's a pretty great movie! Again, thank you 💕 I think my dad loves it so much because he also put his tongue On a frozen rail when he was a kid!! He said he ripped "half" his tongue off, then his mom yelled at him for getting blood all over the front steps 😂😜

This movie was and will always continue to play during Christmas at our house, such a classic. The game cube with Luigi's Mansion and Super Smash Bros Melee was also my red ryder bb gun and I remember that it was one of those gifts that was hidden and had someone else's name on it to throw me off. I also remember one Christmas when my brothers and I got Donkey Kong Country 2 and we immediately played it on the same day. The tongue stuck to the pole scene was achieved by the actor sticking his tongue over a hole and a little motorized vacuum, hidden in the snow was turned on, which would gently hold his tongue to the pole to make it look like it was actually frozen on there.

I grew up in Alaska. Classmate named Janelle tested this theory on a dare in 3rd grade. A teacher had to come out to free her from the pole with warm water - problem is she brought the staff room kettle in her rush and the water was HOT - ended up both freeing her AND also burning her poor already injured tongue. But kids are dumb and metal is cold - this was not the only event I witnessed - just the first and most traumatic so it stands out. I had to free the neighbor kid from his chain link fence once - but I already knew the warm water trick and armed with that knowledge you could handle stuff without crying to adults for rescue.

I remember the first time I saw this movie I actually came in the middle of it, about the time his teacher and his mother are chanting, "you'll shoot your eye out", at him and I asked the person with me, what on earth are you watching? He told me, surprised I hadn't seen it before. I now watch this movie every Christmas. It is just the best. So many quotable lines! Oh, and as someone who grew up with the old metal ice cube trays, the easiest way to get metal stuck to your skin off is simply a little warm water. Great reaction!

I agree, there is nothing that compares to Christmas time when you are a kid. As an adult, we have lost several family members over the years and they are definitely not the same. I took those years for granted so you definitely need to cherish them.

You guys brought me down memory lane. I feel the same way as you guys. When my grandmother died, Christmas was never the same. The family stopped getting together, because my grandma was the glue that kept everything together. I miss those days. Watching this with you guys makes me feel like you guys are the brothers I never had. So much fun! Thank you guys, and I can’t wait for next Christmas now.

My fav part of Christmas is being Santa!! My kids are too old to really believe anymore but I really loved being Santa. I have the same fond memories of my childhood Christmas that you do. No one can cook fried eggs like my mom did on Christmas morning. Mom’s eggs for breakfast and her mashed potatoes at dinner are little things I’ll never forget. Also, there is that one special gift that I always make a big deal out of each year. Always a production regarding that one gift. It’s usually last and usually something you didn’t ask for and aren’t expecting but is a huge deal. Watching Christmas movies…claymation and animated shows! It was such a special time. I really miss it.

I love this movie. Such a time capsule of the 1940s. Plus it shows how America really was then! Plus, I don't live far from Cleveland, where they filmed this classic! It's always on at my house on the annual TBS/TNT 24-hour marathon. :) my grandparents introduced me to this movie, and eventually I wound up with the 70th anniversary Red Ryder BB gun that I proudly possess. Also, this movie was based off a bunch of stories that originally appeared in PLAYBOY magazine. Who knew one of the greatest family films of all time came from an adult magazine?

@@elijahvincent985 This was in the 60’s, 70’s & 80’s. It used to be a cliche to say you read Playboy for the articles, but it really was true. It was a very good magazine in its heyday. I don’t even know if they publish it anymore. They probably haven’t for 10 or 15 years.

Those snow suits were hard to move in, but so warm. Bundled up in that you felt unstoppable. Dive into the biggest snow pile you could find and just keep having fun. The nostalgia triggered by this movie what makes it immortal. The mumbled words his dad says thru the movie was his way of swearing without getting a worse rating for profanity. I literally heard that from my mother when I mentioned a bb gun back in the day. "No, you'll shoot your eye out".

Gremlins is my favorite Christmas movie too! But A Christmas Story is definitely in my top 5! One of my most memorable Christmases was when In was 9 in 1984. We had a rule for Christmas morning. I was not allowed to open my presents until my parents got up and I was not allowed to wake them up. My dad worked nights and hardly ever got up before noon. You might think this was a cruel thing to do to a kid, but my parents weren't heartless. There was a caveat to the rule. I was allowed to open and play with any toy in my stocking as soon as I got up. I had a HUGE stocking. So that Christmas morning I got up at 6am and dumped my.stocking out on the floor. It was full of all the mini Autobot Transformers, all of them were there along with a decent amount of Gobots! My grandmother lived with us and she was an early riser. She was up and sitting in the TV room with the TV on a.channel just playing Christmas music. I brought my stocking in there and played with my new "appetizer" toys all morning. Then when my parents were up it was time for the main course! I opened my presents and when I was done I had every single Transformer that was out in 1984, the first year for G1! What a great Christmas! For me, it's the memories of the great Christmases and other holidays that keep company now on holidays when I'm usually alone. I can just sort of meditate and fall into those memories and it's almost...almost...as good. There are sandwiches and there are sammiches! Cold leftover holiday turkey make the best ever sammiches!!! Get out some of the leftover dinner rolls, slather them with mayo, put turkey and cheese on it. Some Lays potato chips and a couple sweet gherkins on the side. The turkey is in chunks and fall out as the roll gets torn apart and for some reason that seems to make the sammiches even better! Best Regards!

I watch this on the 24-hour marathon on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I love this movie. When Ralphie goes to see Santa at the mall and when he stands in line, the man that tells him he is cutting the line is the director, narrator and author of the book. That scene where the dogs stole the turkey is psa to not leave the turkey out. Plus it still needed to cook.

My favorite Christmas movie. Loved hearing you guys talk about what Christmas really means and you are absolutely right. I was lucky enough to grow up during those times as a kid. My mother had 6 brothers and sisters. Made for great family get togethers. I tried to give my children the same memories. Also, Santa’s gifts were never wrapped so you knew Christmas morning which ones were from him. Hope you both have a great Thanksgiving and a wonderful Christmas. 🎄🎅🏼

I absolutely LOVE this film. It is so authentic to the period which is just a little before my time - I was born in '47 and things hadn't changed that much by then. My dad had a car very much like the one Ralphie's dad drove. And I always wanted a B-B gun but my folks wouldn't buy one for me because ---- "You'll shoot your eye out!"
