One of FRONTLINE's most requested programs -- third-grade teacher Jane Elliott's lesson in discrimination.
Subscribe on KZfaq: bit.ly/1BycsJW
The day after Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed, Jane Elliott, a teacher in a small, all-white Iowa town, divided her third-grade class into blue-eyed and brown-eyed groups and gave them a daring lesson in discrimination. This is the story of that lesson, its lasting impact on the children, and its enduring power 30 years later.

Drastic Of course I think we should teach our children about racism. getting 8 year olds to bully each other to tell them that it is wrong is not the way it should be done. First of all children don’t have any solid morals or empathy. Secondly bullies have a tendency to continue to using nonsense like blue eyes / brown eyes well after the experiment as a reason to harass other students and kids. Please don’t automatically assume that I am some bigot because I don’t agree with Eliot’s methods. Only seeing in absolutes is a logical fallacy.

Sam I agree that the teaching method may have been extreme but racism is never a pleasant experience. That’s the point. To experience something for having a trait you can’t help is wrong. While I can understand the trauma that some kids may go thru, imagine the trauma you get when you have to put up with racial bias every day.

For a lack of better word, it's that children are more "naive" and I mean that in a positive way. They are not afraid to imagine a different version of themselves, to change their views of the world. As adults, we think we're weak when we change our opinions. We think our world view should be concrete. We think we are "enlightened" and stop being naive and interested. In excercises with adults, you can see how they are trying to enforce their own views on the experiment instead of taking part in it. They are too afraid to give up their egos for a day, while children are not.

@@LightLife4the point Ella is making is that the blue-eyed woman said “We all have faced some form of discrimination…” and said that this exercise wasn’t reality because people don’t just get “constantly badgered like this”. When, in fact, POC can and DO get “badgered” or discriminated like this on an everyday basis. That’s why one of the brown-eyed women (who was still white) was quick to correct her, which, by the way, is one example of how to advocate for someone outside of your own race.

What really hit home for me, was the fact that these kids understood SO quickly that the experiment is about experiencing what racism/discrimination FEELS like. I watched the other two documentaries and the adults missed the point entirely, only thinking they were being called out as racists. That is not the point at all, the point is to experience what prejudice is like and how things that cannot be controlled are not a reason to be treated in a horrific manner. As soon as that child said “I understand how the brown eyed people felt yesterday” was the moment I knew the lesson hit home. That is what this experiment is about to realize that racism is a ridiculous reason to feel hateful towards another. Smh

Sadly today kids are deprived of such experiences.

Except underlying this whole experiment is the awkward question... Why don't people discriminate based on eye color...or hair color... or height.... And then the obvious realization that race must be more significant than those things. Probably because the racial group is an extension of the biological family. So she's basically just brainwashing these kids into believing that race is no more significant than eye color. Even though race is something you share with your ancestors and your kin and is a visual proof of your heritage and isolates you from people who don't share your heritage. Hmm maybe more significant than eye color.

@@joeshmo95 You do realize that eye, hair, and skin are all determined by melanin right? One chemical is responsible for these three components of the human body. These kids aren't being brainwashed. They're being educated about the reality of people who are different from them. Do you have any idea how much DNA we share with other races and yet we look nothing like them? There are white people that have 20% - 30% Afro-Caribbean DNA yet they look just like a casual white person. This proof doesn't seem too visual if you ask me. Especially seeing as how you have to test for it. Your heritage doesn't isolate you from anything. Ignorance and prejudice does that...

@@jonathanaleman2338 Absolutely. But would you rather white folk have no example to that horrible feeling in their whole lives or at least some? I think this if this nerfed version of racism is demeaning and hurtful *enough* to get results like that from people, a LONG TERM change of behavior that helps tie people together this much, as shown by the results of the repeated applications of this exerceise over the years... I think it's the right kind of tool to use. The structural and violent racism we have today should have never been allowed to remain this bad for so long, and perhaps it was because the people with the power to change it didn't think it was their job to eliminate that behavior, like they had done enough. This kind of prejudice check is almost a racist vaccine when done right to a class of kids.
@Kindred04
@Kindred04 3 жыл бұрын
@@CalamityCanyon - I don't think Jonathan Aleman was saying anything against Ms. Elliott's exercise. I think his response was strictly about the people on here calling the teacher abusive for yelling at the kids. Like he said, those kids only had to endure that for a very short while. I find it disgusting that people like jeff5102 would call the teacher abusive just because some kids cried from being discriminated against for a little while during a school day, as a means of teaching them an important lesson about the impact of discrimination against others. I bet he doesn't give a damn about people who actually experience racism and discrimination on a daily basis. People who can't just wake up the next day and be told it was all just a social experiment. I completely agree with you, this is the right kind of tool to use. I personally think every single school in the country should implement it. Jane Elliott started doing this in 1968. Can you even imagine how much better this country would be if this had been part of the required curriculum for all schools over the past 52 years?

Now, here in 2023, Americans continue to judge people for many reasons, but often we are distrusting or hating others because they voted for a candidate other than we did for President. I have been told that I should not be allowed to vote because only conservatives which are also white and Christian are true Americans. As an educator I can't help but be in awe of her. The ability to take chances like this is something very very few teachers would take. Anything that can potentially cause controversy, at least those topics not approved of, is something that is to be avoided at all costs. The freedom for a teacher to take this leap is where the real impactful lessons are learned. That of course is not to say that every teacher who wants to take a chance is as capable as her but giving the initiative to teachers is something I believe benefits children far more than any harm it could possibly do.

I’ve never seen anything so powerful. When Mrs Elliot first started with the children, seeing the reactions on the children’s faces I had silent tears. If only this would be a requirement for young children. It clearly shows in the end the children understand racism. Even with the adults, in the end of just an hour and a half I feel they understood. It’s sad that this teacher started this in her classroom around 1968 and it was never put into practice back then. Imagine how different the world would be today if it had been. He is educator he should teach us that you can’t discriminate someone by their colors or races. But I found this. I was one of the racists. When he discriminated Asian people, I was like “I was Japanese and we were not like others. I didn’t bring virus to the US. Chinese did that!” After that, I was so ashamed of myself. "...they shot a King, Mrs Elliot. Why did they shoot that King?" That question from a child says so much to me. Heartbreaking. I never, until hearing this child, realized that MLK could have become our President. Never dawned on me. How different the world might be right now without evil influence. I'll retire to despair.

This also goes to show just how sensitive and vulnerable children's minds truly are :( it makes me feel bad just thinking about abusive parents who mindlessly shouts hurtful things to their children...

As a teacher myself, I can say that some of us really love and care about our students. I really wish this anti-teacher sentiment that is currently so politically active would reevaluate what we do for society. Every time someone says you should thank a veteran for their service, you should also thank a teacher for theirs.

THE TITLE TEACHER DOESNT MAKE YOU A DECENT HUMAN BEING -IT GIVES YOU THE POWER TO ABUSE YOUR POSITION, DESTROYING THE LIVES OF INNOCENT BLACK CHILDREN AND SOCIETY IN GENERAL. A REAL EDUCATOR KNOWS THE DIFFERENCE AND THERE ARE PLENTY OF THEM OUT THERE WHOM NEVER ASK FOR THANKS BECAUSE WHAT THEY DO IS FROM THE HEART. TEACHERS/ SCHOOLS ARE SOME OF THE WORST PERPETRATORS OF RACISM- WONT ADMIT IT THO- THEIR IGNORANCE IS DISGUSTING. YOU ARE NOT ALL THE SAME!!! WHY DONT YOU KNOW THIS?? ITS EXACTLY WHAT IS BEING DISCUSSED!!!!!!! ITS A VOCATION NOT A PROFESSION. IF YOU LOVE AND CARE ABOUT YOUR STUDENTS THATS GREAT BUT YOU ARE PRENTENDING YOU DONT KNOW THIS IS NOT TRUE OF LOTS OF TEACHERS!!!!!!!!! JUST LIKE HOW THE WHITE RACE PRETEND RACISM DOESNT EXSIST. THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK!!!!!! IF YOU REALLY CARED YOU'D BE MORE THOUGHTFUL AND NOT SELF SEEKING.

Christopher Diaz, PhD unless you risk your life everyday in a foreign country fighting for freedom and justice for others? You do not deserve a thank you. Don’t ever compare a teacher to a veteran again,. You are not the same.

What struck me most about the group of adults was the willingness to listen and learn. I am unsure if this method would work the same way today. The adults in that room were able to dissemble at the end and be open to change. Changing minds today seems exponentially harder. What is it about I wonder.

So powerful and an eye-opening experiment. What I got out of this is if there’s something is NOT right ask other people whether they’re in the same shoes you’re in. If that is talk to them and ask help and support each other and stand up against anything you’re humiliated and discriminated.

Because they were easier to be manipulated and already knew THEIR TEACHER for a longer period of time. She was probably much kinder to them before this experiment.

It could be because children are more innocent. We are all prejudice, that's a fact. If we all had the same skin color, we would find something else to divide each other. If people started teaching their children how to Respect everyone on the basis of personality rather than physical aspects, then and only then would we be at peace but this will never happen.

I am a teacher and this is such a great lesson but I wouldn't be able to go through with this. My heart breaks just watching it. This is Ms. Elliott is an exceptional teacher. She understands the importance of this lesson and how it will help the children in life. Also, It's unfortunate but in today's classroom, a teacher would probably be fired for this. Parents would definitely complain and throw a fit. Kids of all ages would also not be able to handle this situation.

Watching the adults do this experiment was amazing.... blue eyes against brown eyes can certainly bring the nastiness out of people, isn’t it something how adults react to discrimination... the hopelessness was real for the blue eyed folks. I really feel people of all ages need to watch this or participate in this experiment. I love this teacher🦋🍎
