As South Africa readies itself for a new administration, with possibly
a new police minister,
we take a look at the country's ever-increasing murder rate through
the eyes of those who are at the coalface.
South Africa recorded a 2.1% increase of murders in the third quarter
of 2023/2024 in the lead-up to what would be a watershed election.
Here's Newzroom Afrika's Linda Mnisi with that report.
Tune into Newzroom Afrika DStv channel 405 for more.

How can you fight crime without fighting unemployment ? Job loses ?inequalities? Increasing police will never be a solution.

I don't know why those in power need to be told this! Or they know very well and just don't give a damn! It's known around the world that unemployed people will most likely resort to crime to earn a living, instead of earning a living through a JOB. This is all the ANC's fault!!

Exactly! So, so many good policemen and women out there. Plenty! But they are being constantly let down by their rotten colleagues day in and day out. My brother is a police officer and we live in different cities (he lives in a small town and I live in a big city). When I tell him what his colleagues had to say upon my numerous encounters with them I can see his eyes fill with tears of despair and helplessness when he hears my stories.

What people need to realise is that there's a strong correlation between high crime rates and social ills. Social ills like poverty, unemployment, substance abuse, lack of education, and family instability can create conditions that make people more likely to commit crimes. For example, someone who is unemployed and struggling to make ends meet may be more likely to steal to support themselves or their family. Crime is unlikely to go down regardless of a new police minister or change in laws.

Oh please man... That's a shallow way of looking at things... Criminality is about lack of self respect, it's lack of family values... It's trashy behaviour. when the July riots and looting happened how many people took their cars to go loot... That's not poverty - that's a lack of morals, that's a Godless people. I still remember that fat man on the news who had his own company was arrested for stealing expensive whiskey. Ya so what you say to that? When they looted the liquor aisles and stole everything except the books and the stationary in the shop? The shops untouched during the looting was the book shops. Look at Ramaphosa... That man is not missing any meals , he's not poor... Yet he still steals and stuffs dollars in his couch. All those fat ANC politicians aren't stealing because they're unemployed and poor... They steal because they're rotten to the core.

Too many police chiefs and blue light brigades, too little law enforcement. The cadre deployment to SAPS management of people with no policing skills, means there is zero control over drug gangs (often connected to the ruling political elite), under pinned by 40% unemployment. "Basic Income Grants" won't change that - nor will more "anti market" socialist state control of the economy (hasn't that worked out great for SOEs).. in the past week, at PE's beachfront, more than 2 people have been shot dead or stabbed to death. Murders hapen every few minutes, all over this country - its more than a disgrace, its a tragedy. The country is in free fall, and the reason is the ANC, EFF and MK. This is the Government the media thinks is going to "solve" any of these challenges?

The real meaning of "Inkabi" is not "Assassin/Hitman"Journalists should desist from promoting the term as it makes it look like a viable trade to miscreants or the gullible. Maybe they should use the correct term of "umbulali" or some other term instead of denigrating a name used for oxen. This names true meaning runs the risk of being lost to our children.

Why no one asks why so much tax money is spent of legal aid for these criminals? No one even questions it. You know how much tax goes for these criminal's legal aid? Not even the victims get so much legal assistance....actually no one in this country gets as much free legal asisstance as criminals. This is the way the ANC designed it.. Free lawyers for their hitmen. And people happily pay for their rapist's legal defence... We pay for our own hijacker's lawyers... We pay for our own murderer's lawyers. The justice system is such a joke... Lamola can't even read a speech written for him. Anyway no one seems upset in this country about the state of things...seems like people like the crime. Only the DA seems upset about crime.
