I'm telling a decluttering story today that demonstrates the FACT that getting rid of big clutter is a big (REALLY BIG) hassle!

Our HOA rents out big dumpsters once a year for the whole neighborhood. They fill up fast. ❤😂

My community has what's called "clean up week" where you can put out nearly anything without paying extra for removal. Scrappers drive around and pick up things, people pick up items they're interested in (my whole first apartment was furnished from clean up week), rehabbers pick things to refinish, and the rest is hauled away. It's a fun annual event that helps the community in a lot of ways.

I hired a junk haulers to help me clean up random wood, an old truck canopy and other random stuff from my yard. It was the best day ever. My yard now can be mowed easier and faster and looks tidy and not like a dump. 😂

A game changer for me was realizing that I could take a minivan full of stuff to the dump for $20. Now, if I need to get rid of larger items that don't fit in my trash, but will fit in my minivan instead of holding on to them for years, I just take them to the dump. Sometimes, these things are way more cost effective than we realize.

My late husband was a forklift mechanic & used to bring home scrap metal from various jobs (with permission) - and once or twice a year, took it to get money for it to pay for his hunting & fishing trips. After he passed, my son started adding to the pile but never got around to taking it to the scrapyard to cash it in. It was an eyesore on my property. I gave him a deadline, and warned that I was going to pay someone to haul it way. He missed the deadline, so I paid someone $100 to take away some garbage plus all that metal.. my son was upset that I wasted money. I told him I'd pay him another $100 not to whine about it. lol. I just wanted it off of my property. It was totally worth it!

Our waste management company lets you put one big item out a week for collection (you just have to call them first to give them a heads up). Love this service!

We used to split the cost of a dumpster with my parents each year in the fall to get rid of big things, well worth the expense.

My husband is a contractor so we actually have a dumpster on our property for all the waste from his clients remodels. I can't tell you how nice it is to have a dumpster available to us all the time.

Amen! Years ago I bought a very ornate mirror with no frame, just mirror cut into fancy shapes, surrounding the 40” oval mirror. It was beautiful and about $50, which seemed unbelievable, so I bought it immediately and congratulated myself for scoring such a treasure. In the store, the fancy and fragile edges were protected by lots of cardboard, which I immediately discarded when I got it home. I hung that mirror in our bedroom for a couple of years until I finally acknowledged that it looked ridiculous there. I then moved it to our living room, which we use when company visits, and it wasn’t the place for this “castle-like” decor either. I kept it there for several years-even though it again looked ridiculous. After far too many years of dealing with this “blasted thing” I finally cut up lots of cardboard (time wasted), taped the cardboard all around the perimeter (tedious to say the least), borrowed a truck (call a friend, make a date, drive there, drive home), loaded the truck with this even more massive mirror to take to donation place… actually three donation places because the first two didn’t take fragile things that were that big. Returned the truck. Learned my lesson… and now if I see a large ANYTHING I always remind myself that I am going to have to move or discard this thing at some point and that’s usually enough for me to walk on by.

It's a certain kinda gal who gets excited about a dumpster coming 😆. I'm in that crowd for sure! If it's a large metal object (dryer? file cabinet?) then you may be able to find a scrap collector to come take it away for free.

One of the things I love about Auckland is that we have an annual inorganic collection by the council where you can throw all of the big stuff that you no longer want. And they get picked up from your front lawn if you book the service in. Yes, we can of course also bring them straight to the waste collection place and pay per kg but having it picked up at your front lawn for free is such a blessing. I haven’t had anything big to get rid of over the past couple of years but it does come in handy when I have broken stuff that needs to be gotten rid of. Yes, they are a major hassle otherwise.

I don’t know if anyone has suggested this, but we are going in on a dumpster with our neighbors!!! We are all so excited!

The money spent is worth every penny. I paid the local junk company to remove 2 huge wall units of shelves, a steel beast of a bunkbed, several media units and other odds and ends... the $800 I paid was nothing compared to having those things gone. It is an investment in my sanity and home. Makes me think twice before I buy anything big to add to our home.

This thing about big stuff is so frustratingly true! Thanks for sharing! And Reid’s comments are hilarious again!

How timely! I just had a similar realization. My parents are moving and we were about to get the antique, huge, 800 lbs+ family piano moved to our small house. Figuring out the logistics of moving this piano accross cities and into our home was a puzzle and it would have cost thousands. Then we thought it over and declined. We would have that puzzle again in the future if we move. It also made the pressure of 'realizing the potential the piano' anxiety inducing. What if we didn't end up playing it and then still have to care for it and sacrifice space for it? I felt a lot of relief for not taking it!
