In many cities across the country, artificial light is making it more difficult to see stars in the night sky. Reporting for Sunday TODAY, NBC’s Harry Smith travels to a small town in Colorado where residents are putting covers on lights in order to let constellations light up the sky.

I actually did witness the milky way one time in my life. I was so dark outside for whatever reason and look up and notice that one of the "clouds" were light dimmed and realized what I saw was the milky way galaxy. Great sight to see. If you ever get a chance to see it in the sky, take a moment and just take it in.

That's what I thought at first too. You better take another look, unless you've got a weak heart, and think it over. I've realized through careful observations, that it's actually "The Great Rift:", a crack in the Firmament, not a galaxy. Closer examination and studying it's movements across earth will change your mind and life.

It would be really great if more cities could hood their lights or cut back on them altogether. There are so many street lights, especially on the freeways, that we could get rid of half of them and still have enough light. Seriously, do we really need a street light every couple hundred feet? Getting rid of every other one could help alittle.

I remember back in 1996 while on board the USS Dubuque as a Marine, and one night I was guarding the boat deck doors while flight ops was happening. When the helicopter took off and waited for the "all clear" to sound so I can get back to bed, I looked up at the night sky and saw exactly what you see in the video, maybe even more so. Out in the middle of the pitch black pacific ocean, no lights at all save for the dull red blinking light at the top of the mast. Which didn't effect anything. I was simply mesmerized by the experience. Having lived near a large city (Atlanta) all my life, and only being able to see just a few bright stars. That night however, I was able to see the Milky Way and the whole sky just filled with stars was absolutely amazing. A few minutes later, they sounded the "all clear", but I didn't care I stayed there to stare up at the stars for a while longer.

Noah S. I think people think there's nothing we can do about the situation; but there IS. Some of the changes are so simple to accomplish! If you Google "light pollution" (or Bing it), there's a LOT of info resources to explore, to learn what we CAN do. You may be very surprised at how simple some of the solutions are, and energy saving, as well. Read Paul Bogard's non-fiction book, "The End of Night." It's a very interesting and informative read.

I kind of take it for granted growing up in Idaho, now on the south western Boise part. You don't have to go very far from any of our cities or towns to see the the Milky Way and all the stars. Indian Springs a small camping pool resort, we had a scouts camping trip and dutch oven breakfast the next morning, that night I remember just laying in the field looking up for hours. So many other close locations throughout the state, around Lava Hot Springs, Downata Hot Springs, near various small towns like Malad, Inkom, Idaho City, Cascade, Sun Valley or any mountains anywhere in the state.

@@eddieteddy273 You can look at the "milky way" with two mental images in mind. You can imagine seeing a ball of stars surrounded by spokes of stars. Or you can look hard and close at it on Nat Geo's "Night Sky", and in all the time lapse videos in youtube, and how it moves, and you may start thinking, (as I did) this thing looks like a crack in the sky. How could that be? HOW can it move the way it does? THAT doesnt make any SENSE. HOW can it move that way? So I started thinking "whut if it is a crack?" and looked VERRY closely at it, and how it moves. You'll come to know that there is no such thing as a "solar system" as you were taught. You 'll figure that out if you want to know the truth. AND did you know? The ancients before Adam and Eve, called that the "Great Rift?" meaning a RIP, and they knew it was a rip in the sky dome, or Firmament, or Rakia--"a transparent dome, made of metal, hammered out thin". That's from Hebrew translations, not the Greek. Forget Greek, the Bible was written in Hebrew, and misinterpreted by the pagans. The ancients didnt use space craft, they were told that by God and "knew it". 2,000 years later Adam and Eve were created after the world was flooded for the sinfulness of Satan. His world was washed away. But we found the evidence in Gobekli Tepe, that the astronomical map was the same then as it is now. And they called it the Great Rift, the place where departed souls enter heaven (IF they enter heaven). And it just so happens to reflect prophecies of when ISRAEL is going to be incinerated in war, and the saints enter heaven at the Rapture, or The Marriage Supper of the Lamb of God. Then the final 7 years tribulation starts, with the antichrist in power, and THAN Yashua (Jesus) comes to set up his kingdom on earth, the kingdom comes. You live in the very generation to see that happen, as told by Christ, "the generation to see Israel 'return' as a nation will be the one to see my return". This is saying that HE is coming back (after his murder), but before the return, the Jews will be removed from Israel, but then return to it, as a nation, the capitol in Jerusalem, when WWIII breaks out, Rapture happens, for 7 years, the antichrist takes over, then Jesus comes. that's the layout. His earnest warning is "Dont take the mark of the antichrist, you will NOT enter heaven if you betray God that way. "

Its amazing and crazy that most people wont ever see it with their own eyes. Its so Beautiful. When i was a kid in the 90's i allways looked at the sky when it was dark(im from Greenland) when i went to live in denmark. I told my New classmates about the stars and hos many there are. They said i was crazy an there was Nothing out there. I swor to them that there are many stars and Dared them to go out when it was dark like midnight. I also went out at midnight. It was sad cause there where almost no stars in the sky. I found out that lights from houses and Streetlights blocks the stars so you cant see them that much. I was sad that most of my friends wouldent ever exsperience the amazing night sky. I went to norway with my gf when i was 23-24 or so an we both saw the amazing night sky. I had ofc told her about the stars. When we saw it toghter, she took my hand while we looked up at the Beauty. And an whispered "im sorry you were right its impossible to explain how Beautiful it is" we looked at it for hours. Good times

I think 25% of the world's light pollution is coming from my paranoid neighbor's house. I've NEVER seen so much lighting in my life, and I mean UGLY lighting, flood lights on ALL SIDES of the house, glaring down the bluff out back, down his driveway and into the neighbor's driveway across the street, lighting up our entire house... yes, it's that bright. We don't have any laws here regarding light pollution, sadly, and it's horrible to look at.

Is it not ODD? If you've believed the "solar system" drawings, you must accept and believe the earth goes around the sun once in 24 hours If you watch the time lapse videos of the "Milky Way", it travels across the sky from the northeast to the southwest, circling around earth, coming back again to the east horizon in the morning. Since the sun & Milky Way appears in the morning together, they should remain together all day, but in 3 hours time, Milky Way is in the south, so it clearly looks like earth has moved in between the sun and milky way. Common sense will tell you that there's no way that a small, minute turn of earth can create this massive a change in the sky's appearance. So then what would do this? ONLY if the earth is flat and the sun is under a rotating dome with a crack in the dome. I know you'll say "but the earth-etc etc" I know what we've all been taught, I believed it too. Dont accuse ME of stupid, the ancient explorers drew a map of the 33 other continents just beyond the "bio-dome", they found more land, freezing weather--not to worry, we dont fall off. And there's likely another dome covering ours. The "cosmos" belong in the catalogue of God's creations, and are"proof of his handiwork"(Psal 19). in truth.

So you think My "dome''s got a crack in it, eh? God warned his people that in the end times he will send a grand delusion so strong that even his people (Judeo-Christians) would be deceived if possible. The Books of Enoch have been removed from our sight to hide these facts, but Ezekial, Moses, Job, John (Revelations 15), and other major prophets, incl Jesus (the Son) aren't joking when they speak of these things. You can figure out that all the continents were once attached before the great split. There's so much more, and a lot of Good News attached to the bad. . The Bible says the stars are attached inside the dome, and the greater luminaries, the sun & moon rotate above us, inside the dome. Study the explorers, esp Admiral Richard Byrd's proofs that we 're covered by a dome, with more land masses outside of Antarctica. 6000 years of naval explorers producing maps that show 32 continents outside the dome cant all be wrong. And nobody can guess how far it goes beyond that, or how many more domes covering other"worlds" exist. All we know is that Yeshua (Jesus) is our Messiah, and this is HIS dome, and he's coming to take it over real soon. It's made of glass panels attached to grids. I do believe I've seen the grids. Get your mind boggled. Dare to watch the flat earth videos. God is real.

I obviously havent held you back from thinking what you believe. In the past 7,000 years, the continents and the dome split and slid apart, the continents were covered by water and then ice. Most of it thawed. God says 'I never change, never will" although we can change what he DOES with some simple, sincere prayer. Adm Byrd photographed a wall of ice 1500 m.high, surrounding our continents, and discovered there are more continents outside of that rim of ice we call Antarctica. You've no doubt heard America's song Ventura Highway, whc describes the world outside of the world you know, because they (and many others) went there and saw it. It's covered by a dome, and outside of that is more ice where no suns melt it, and the land goes on indefinitely. Start looking at Flat Earth vids and dont stop until you understand everything. THEN decide who's wrong.
