I did not have a single Citizen until I was well into my 60s. Now I have 8! They are putting out some very attractive watches nowadays.

While I am quite loyal to Seiko, I must admit Citizen has really been stepping up thier game!

I've been buying citizen since I was a kid but I got on the Seiko kick and came back to citizen Better Built better value-for-money and this watch proves that right here

I’m really glad you called this an “alternative” instead of a “Rolex killer”. My newest pet peeve is KZfaqrs calling a $100 Seiko/Citizen a Rolex OP or Rolex Datejust killer.

Finally, a big KZfaqr talks about this awesome watch!! I've had the blue variant for 8 months now, and it never ceases to impress me. Such an exceptionally well built piece, especially considering its ~$150 price tag!

I clamped onto Citizen about 15 years ago because a super close friend of mine had just been assigned to his east coast SEAL team and he said it was wild how all the old guys with experience would run Eco-Drive Promasters because they were impeccably accurate and as bombproof as a G-Shock. I still have all 3 of them that I’ve acquired since then and they’re impossible not to love. Admittedly, even as a hardcore Citizen lover, my Promaster Diver GMT has some significant alignment issues but it’s the one my wife picked out herself and I just love it. So it’s just made me so proud the last year and half that Citizen has really stepped into their innovative role and taken some big shots. I’m a Seiko lover as well, but every budget-minded watch dork like myself knows what it’s like to attach yourself to a brand that refuses to be unattainable.

I'm impressed with how well this watch stands up to scrutiny. Maybe an aftermarket mesh strap would work well. Between this and the Tsuyosa, Citizen is dominating this category.

Very nice, thanks for the video. Purely personal opinion, but I think the day complication mars the good looks of this one.

I would really like to see manual wind watches again. I have a few vintage watches and absolutely love how thin they are and I have no problem winding them everyday.

I guess for the price it leaves room to swap out the crapola bracelet. No micro adjusts, and a bit thick for what it is. I have a feeling they will make something similar in quartz and make it thinner. Echo drive (solar) I mean, that would be nice and a better bracelet.

Im surprised they used a see-through caseback . It would have slimmed it down a bit with a solid caseback. All in all, good pick up.

I like it, I would choose the orange option for a change of pace.

You can also buy a really nice Bulova day date style watch in stainless and gold tone for $250 AUD 👍

Since Seiko has almost moved out of the well-made budget Japanese watches niche to the ±$500 and above market, Citizen is filling this field with their affordable watches, that's a clever marketing. They see the colorful trend and provide the good product for the price. I like this one even better than the Tsuyosa, I think it looks less like a direct Rolex homage.

I've had my eye on this watch since the spring. I've been watching and waiting...just received it today. STUNNING for the money. And I did get it for 151.00 usd (tax in). One of the best steals of my watch collection! Why more people don't know about this watch is beyond me. Great review,Jody! 😉👍🏼

Looks nice, but I'll take the eco-drive Corso. Not very colorful but date at 6, better indices, and the convenience of the eco-drive of course

this yellow is gorgeous, somehow even nicer than the tsuyosa yellow. But I'm determined to get this in the green, its incredible (solid green, not the gradient version)

I love Citizen watches the only thing that would make this better for me would be an eco-drive, I have enough automatics and the cost to get them serviced gets expensive.

These are cool. Only thing that bugs me is the size of the day text and the size of the bezel, both seem to be 'fighting' one another. If one of them was smaller then it would look perfect - personally would make that bezel a little less thick, then it would frame the day perfectly

only trouble is if you want a Rolex there is no alternative, however if you like the look of the oyster perpetual and don't care about Rolex so many watchmakers have something to offer. A Seiko 5 is my go to for that rolex look :-)

Absolute looker indeed. Great color and I like what they did with the day of the week display. Like it's part of the logo. The cristal adds yo the look as well, with a nice curve. I would be very tempted if the watch case was 36-38mm.

Citizen really offers some great watches for a reasonable price and this is not so common anymore in the watch industry. This color is very nice, but I personally prefer the Tsuyosa in yellow 💛

For me, a 40ish mm watch that's mostly dial is too big. Not sure about the day date frames being different styles too. Would like it as a smaller quartz or eco drive.

I'd like to see a version with the date window at 6 o'clock, for a bit of the old symmetry.

I have this model with the green (really not into this colourfull dials) dial I can say that it seems like a 1000-2000€ watch. Citizen for me it is now the old Seiko (before the absurd increase in price of their entry level models), but cearly with a much more refined finish in their entry level watches.

Similar to the seiko 5 SNXS line. I have the 81 champagne dial with baton hands and indices and it’s so beautiful on a jubilee.

I dislike the cross hairs even though Tissot do the same. I hate the Day cut out and I dislike the mineral crystal.

Even under the macro it looks fantastic. Can’t say that for most Ali watches. I really like it. I will add a note to my calendar to hunt one down in 3-6 months hopefully in the colour I want at the price I want. Once the excitement dies down. Another amazing review. Merci!!

Really love that colure alot. I do think it’s a little too much dial for me. I wish they had shrunk the dial a little and had more case around it.

Today I purchased the navy blue dial, leather strap version of this watch for A$142.00 including postage from The Watch Factory, an authorised Citizen online seller.

That’s awesome, though I think it would’ve looked better with the date window at 6 o’clock to match the day window. Or just no date.

I like the Tsuyosa, but i like the appearance of this one even better. Mightbbe tempted to get one and do some upgrades on components.

Had the yellow Tsuyosa from Citizen but I like this better and its cheaper!

I bought my first Citizen ever (Paradigm) last year by impulse, but kept it by conviction. Now I even have two (Promaster Eco-Drive). The brand is awesome! Couldn't ask for more. I loved the watch featured today.

Man citizen is really hitting it out of the park right now. This and the Tsuyosa seem great. I just picked up a JDM Citizen NB1050 (the "lower end" version of last year's best dial winner) and am absolutely loving it. I think it could be a successor to the Seiko SARB. You should review one! I really need that watch to get more popular so that aftermarket female endlink bracelets get made!!

Had the blue version for a while. With the male end links it wears too large for my skinny wrist on the bracelet. On a vintage brown leather strap though 👌

Sadly, this is selling for around a ridiculous $650 Aussie equivalent in Indonesia, about the same as the Tsuyosa. Only Orient seems to be managing to keep their prices in check and their quality standard up in this market.

I prefer the yellow tsuyosa. This one is a bit busy for me with that day complication under the 12 marker.

This does prove the point that the tsuyosa should either have the 9 series movement or be cheaper. Also since it is so easy to achieve why don't these sports style watches have 100m wr.

Nice review as always and right on time Jody! I was settled to buy the yellow tsuyosa and now that i saw this ( that i had never seen the yellow version) i have second and third thoughts.

That’s true, Seiko has been quietly upscaling its offerings for awhile now, trying to slide by unnoticed but “we” see it increasing almost weekly. Well, I’ll just have to quietly slide over to Citizen’s offerings, already have my eye on a Citizen Promaster at my local AD. I like that dial presentation, different and unique. 😜🇨🇦👍

Citizen makes a very nice bracelet. I've had that same bracelet before and loved it. I liked it better than the watch itself! That said, why doesn't it have a micro adjustment, which is just a common and easily done thing?

I hate the placement of day window.

torn between this model and the Tsuyosa .... which one would you go for? this one has the day, Tsuyosa doesn't. this one has Crystal glass, Tsuyosa has sapphire glass. I tend to like more the Tsuyosa's strap from this one's ..... still in a dilemma :)

Great video, thank you, doing justice to a lightplay monster ! Good to see the Crystal Seven at last getting the attention it deserves as everyone seems to be ranting about the Tsuyosa nowadays. It may IMHO be a touch unfair to refer to Rolex here. Granted, this yellow is what it is, but the design is a lot less derivative than what Citizen have done with the Tsuyosa, for example. The (solid links) bracelet is a lot better than the folded links horror they originally came on a few years ago... although at the time, when they were Asian market only, some came on pretty nice mesh bracelets, which is what I went for back then. At least this bracelet and clasp - not great indeed, but low profile, and a lot less cheap-looking than the clasp on the Tsuyosa - balance the watch head well enough. In terms of legibility, the dark blue and dark green dialed versions launched in early 2023 of course have better contrast, yet the sunburst texture offers quite a bit of lightplay and depth... I ended up getting both ! BTW neither of them hack. It seems Citizen have been quietly adding hacking to the 8200 movement in the past couple of months.
