That Keep Yourself Alive Intro at Montreal 81’ gets me every time! It’s both so warm yet richly deep all at once. His confidence is one of my favorite things about him. He never doubts his ability to play the bass. John’s warm, rich basslines are unmatched.

It's okay, yes. But the Fairy Fellas Masterstroke is better. Speaking a s bass player myself I don't think this video actually shows all his best playing. Save Me in Montreal is superbly good and lovely to play too. Liar from Earl's Court in 77, where he is using a Stingray and Dragon Attack from Montreal is great. John Deacon was great bass player as bass players all know. He was just good. He was a good guitar player generally

@@obsidianobserver John Deacon plays the Bass with a pick most of the time. he does finger play when the song would have more sense according to the rhythm and tempo of the song in question (Millionaire Waltz due to being based on a waltz is a big example, so is Another One Bites The Dust being another due to the upbeat rhythm and tempo)
@obsidianobserver
@obsidianobserver 3 жыл бұрын
He started to use the pick more often in the 80s, I believe. He played Now I'm Here and Tie Your Mother Down with his fingers in the late 70s (as shown in the Hammersmith video) but played it with a pick in the 80s
@alpha34098
@alpha34098 3 жыл бұрын
@@obsidianobserver he did used picks in the 70s too (Somebody to Love , Stone Cold Crazy come to mind). Back at the 70s there were songs that were played in a more slower tempo than in the 80s, allowing to use his fingers to play the bass riff for them the 2 you mentioned are some of them

The keep yourself alive one was actually backchat
@obsidianobserver
@obsidianobserver 4 жыл бұрын
It just sounds a bit like Back Chat, because the song hasn't been released yet, so they can't be performing it. Also it's an improv, so I guess John later use that improv to write Back Chat

For me, it's better than Back Chat maybe for the drums adition.

Want to learn the keep yourself alive opening bass line 😭😭😭
@obsidianobserver
@obsidianobserver 3 жыл бұрын
The starting note is the E on the 7th fret of the A string, then it drops down to the open E string. You can work your way around it once you've known the key notes, in this case, it's E. Hope that helps =D

tbh i made this video when i didn't know much about bass and music in general, so probably have titled the video wrong. too lazy to change it tho, so my apologies

@@obsidianobserver Oh, just FYI, although you probably know now, a riff is like a main theme that repeats, like in _"It's a Kind of Magick," "Another One Bites the Dust," "Under Pressure"_ or _"Dragon Attack."_ A Run is like a frill that is not the main theme, like in _"Somebody to Love"_ or _"Liar"._ Two of the most famous riffs in rock music are Led Zeppelin's _"Whole Lotta Love"_ and Deep Purple's _"Smoke on the Water."_ {:-:-:}
