Hello everyone! This video explains how to capture the aurora, detailing the planning, gear, and settings needed to create beautiful photos. The long nights of winter provide the perfect opportunity to try photographing the aurora, so this video seemed appropriate. I apologize for the late upload, I have been busy as of late.

These are probably the best photography videos I've ever seen. I'm a visual learner and the illustrations and clear narrative make understanding tricky concepts easy to understand. I'm actually traveling to Iceland in 3 weeks with my new Sony a7R II and I learned some really awesome tips on how to shoot this type of photography. Thanks and great work!

Vincent, Nice shots of the aurora from Ft. Yukon the other night. Notice you used Sony a7iv. Have you had overheating problems with this camera? Lots of fellow youtubers have stated such. Have u used the Sony a7SIII for aurora video shots? If so, how do the cameras stack up one vs the other with aurora shots?

Hi, I am using a Canon full-frame mirrorless and I have 35MM F1.8. If this is not enough, which one should I choose? Canon EF 24mm f/2.8 is USM Wide Angle Lens Canon EF 28mm f/2.8 is USM Wide Angle Lens Canon EF 28mm f/1.8 USM Wide Angle Lens
@Apalapse
@Apalapse 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late response. I would personally go with the Rokinon 24mm f1.4 or Sigma 28mm f1.8 ART. Most of those Canon cameras have high amounts of coma.

Is it possible to photograph Northern Light with "Panasonic LUMEX LX-100 II", also with people in the picture?
@Apalapse
@Apalapse 4 жыл бұрын
Yes! If that camera has a manual setting then you simply use a long shutter speed, maximum aperture, widest focal length, and adjust ISO until the image looks bright enough.

I just found your channel, great stuff, some of the best visual explanations I’ve heard and seen. Your level of content far exceeds your sub count. But I found your explanation of ISO in this video, while technically correct, confusing. I think a better way to describe it is as a gain switch. Changing the aperture or shutter speed itself isn’t what’s increasing noise, rather it’s the absolute value of the total amount of light hitting the sensor, which is the combination of the aperture, shutter speed, and ambient light. If there is a lesser value of the total amount of light hitting the sensor than is required for a correct exposure, then the only way to correctly expose the photo is by adding gain. Theoretically changing the “gain” either in camera with iso or in post should have the same effect of shot in raw, but in practice it’s often different, sometimes very different if you are changing it by over a couple stops. Which one is better depends on the situation, but I find it’s *usually* in camera using iso, and if it isn’t it’s not normally that big of a difference. All of this is a more advanced technique, it isn’t really necessary for a beginner learning how to photograph the aurora. Other than that I think this video is excellent, if I’m asked for a video on how to photograph the aurora this will be the one I recommend.

Thank you for the clarification and feedback. You're right, it isn't just aperture and shutter speed that affect noise, but also ambient light. I figured most viewers hadn't been exposed ;) to the "truth" about ISO, so I tried to keep it short and simple, a balance I may not have maintained.

The aperture is to small
@Apalapse
@Apalapse 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply, but yes, you can use a remote to control your camera and initiate a timelapse. The aperture of your lens has nothing to do with whether or not it can take a timelapse. Your kit seems fine and you should get good results.

Are you referring to real-time videos of the aurora? If so, there are only a handful of cameras capable of this. I have used a Sony A7s to record realtime video at 1/24s so that is truly realtime. 24 fps is the lowest frame rate I would go for recording video since most cinematic video is filmed at this frame rate and anything lower is noticeably choppy. You can also film at 1/4s and speed it up in post, which I have done. To do any of this though, you need a very very fast lens to let as much light in as possible.

I am confused about the ISO part. Does it mean that ISO itself does not produce noise? But the decrease in aperture and/or the decrease in speed does...?
@Apalapse
@Apalapse 6 жыл бұрын
Correct. It's a huge misconception in photography that ISO increases noise, but knowing this will only impact your photography in few situations, like astrophotography, where ISO can be set low, so the picture looks black, and the brightness raised in post (simulating ISO, but without the drawbacks of decreased dynamic range, tonal accuracy/range, etc.).
@dimitris_
@dimitris_ 6 жыл бұрын
Apalapse that’s interesting. However, why when I take the same picture with same aperture and speed but increased ISO I see a lot more noise ?

Nice. With some cameras, due to internal sources of noise, you may not see what I described until a certain ISO has been reached. On most cameras, above ISO 1600, there is no noise increase with increasing ISO. I suggest researching the term "ISO Invariant," for more information, or check the links in the description. There are many different sources of noise in digital photography.

Can i use my cameraphone taking northernlight using hyperlapse ?
@Apalapse
@Apalapse 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, a smartphone camera should be able to capture the northern lights. As for a hyperlapse, you would probably want to do a timelapse instead, and you may need to download a third-party application to control the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO parameters of the camera.

Whatever u said about iso is completely wrong ,it’s just a shitty artificial brightness . And remember it has nothing to do when you are shooting in bright areas ..!! More iso is surely more sensistivity and more noise for sure ..!! Grain and noise are different , don’t get confused 🤷‍♂️
@Apalapse
@Apalapse 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you're right. ISO is merely an amplification setting applied to light that is already gathered by the camera. I touch on this in my video plus a few others I have published. Sorry for just responding to your comment now, been busy the last few months. Take care!
