I just want to say I appreciate the repetition. Too many creators apologize for repeating themselves but repetition is how many of us learn. I think I’ve seen all of your videos about soil mixes over the years and I still watch the new ones to make sure I’m understanding the concepts. Thank you Gary!

Hi Gary, I do the same pretty much but use organic fertilizer instead of Miracle grow, My mixture I use is a blend of Kellogg Raised Bed soil, Cow Manure, Peat Moss and Vermiculite to keep the cow manure from becoming compacted and give it all a good mix. That is my container mix and in the garden I use the same minus the vermiculite. I have two 4x8 raised beds 32" high and to save money I just started growing in containers. I made trips to all the restaurants and sandwich shops gathering 5 gallon buckets and have around 35 of them plus 7 30 gallon water barrels cut in half for my bigger plants. Last season was my first time ever in 70 years gardening and had an incredible harvest growing better and more productive than all my friends gardens. They all asked what my trick was and I told them "KZfaq" and owe all my success to you! I learned everything from you and referred them all to "the rusted garden" I haven't checked yet to see if any of them commented but I know at least two of them came here. Thank you for all you have taught me. My surplus veggies all found their way to all my friends and relatives plus the local Senior Center, the Veterans office and even brought some to my doctor and nurses that take good care of me at the VA Hospital. As a disabled veteran I took up gardening to keep me moving so I don't end up as a "Rusted Gardener" lol. I do everything organic and only use food grade containers. I drilled a bunch of holes on the bottom and set them on top of bricks 2 high so the rabbits, grubs, slugs and snails along with rodents don't get at them. This season I doubled my containers and have over 100 plants going going outside very soon. I wanna help others as much as possible. Gardening has been a win win situation and if it weren't for you I don't know how it would have turned out. Thanks again for showing me everything

If you make a screen sifter, using 2 by 4s, something big enough to stick over a good sized wheelbarrow, and the screen mesh size isn't small, maybe about 1/4" I think, maybe a TINY bit more open, you can dump those bags into and get out the wood. Another thing you can do is buy bags a year or two before you plan to use it, empty the dirt out into a big pile and just let it sit. The wood stuff will get broken down by biology and then after that the stuff is like regular dirt. I know this because I've done it. About one year of sitting will break down most of it and two years will break down pretty much all of it. Of course for some, if you need a lot of dirt and you have services in the area, just get a truckload. That's the cheapest way. You have to ask about the soil they'll deliver. I've dealt with clay soils and depending on what the quality is (how dense the clay is for one), you can get it to a certain point of moistness and run it through a sifter, then mix it with a sandier soil, mix in some loamy soil, or one of the mixes shown here, so you get a balance of the natural clay soil/sand/loam and it can be an EXCELLENT soil to work with. You need to make sure the amount of clay in that mix is not enough for it to dry hard, like clay wants to do.

Great video Gary. Even folks like me on a suburban plot can save so much money and get a better product by mixing yourself instead of buying bagged stuff. My potting/raised bed base is 30% coco coir 50% compost 10% worm castings and 10% perlite. With additions depending on where it's being used. Seed mix is almost the same as yours except for coir instead of peat. The boiling water trick for indoors works well too. Sorry, I can only give you 1 thumbs up. Cheers!

I've always added garden lime to my peat moss before I mix my blend. Sure, it may or may not help with PH, but it's also a great source of calcium. I mainly grow peppers and I never have blossom end rot. I think it's because I add lime to my peat before I even start making my mix.

Now that I was successful in eliminating the fungus gnats by adding the boiling water I'm afraid to add compost for my potting up mix since I may be introducing more gnat eggs with the compost. I do everything inside with my seed starts so I've just been using water soluble fertilizer to feed and that seems to be working. And the agrothrive seems to work better than the other stuff I was using earlier so thanks for that recommendation.

Well mostly you probably want to dig your beds down 12 inches for carrots, I would mix peat right on the soil, compost if you have it and just loose up 12 inches. Vermiculite has been hard to find and more expensive since the plandemic. I've been using mine sparingly and substituting coco coir instead when i can because its so hard to find.

Using the number 2 instead of to makes these thumbnails look amateur and less likely for people to click on it (in my opinion). If I hadn't already been following for many years, I'd probably skip this one because it doesn't look like it's from someone who could teach me anything with that silly heading Not trying to be critical, just helpful ✌🏻
