In this video, Devin - a TEquipment.NET Certified Thermographer - explains everything you need to know about emissivity in thermal imaging. Emissivity is important to understand because if it is not adjusted properly, it can cause serious errors in your measurements.

Thank you for explaining that. First day with my FLIR TG165-X. I aimed it at the very cold A/C line under the hood of my car and the reading was way off. I wanted to return the unit. Now I know why. I'll try your calibration method with the electrical tape.

I need to be honest. I am torn. I can’t decide if I love this guy or cannot stand this guy! I think it’s a little bit of both. And I think I’m leaning towards. I love this guy. Like, this is a guy I could hang out with and make fun of other peoples stupidity at work. I would also tell him to put a piece of tape on his forehead if he was gonna take a thermal image I think he would understand that. And Wood. Anybody reading this can’t see me, so you have no idea how absolutely hilarious is. If you could see me, you would understand. I’m giving this video 10 out of 10 stars. Because I could tell I would be good friends with this dude… Thanks for that man!

I'm just getting into this as a hobbyist so only learnt the emissivity word the other day. Can you clarify how this works with normal thermal imaging cameras and IR thermal cameras? Or am I misunderstanding completely? I want to get something that can "see" the tunnels burrowed by animals on my farm and an old Flir thermal imaging camera is not showing that so I'm assuming I either haven't set the correct settings or it's not IR, hence why I'm getting into learning about what all the settings mean.

Nicely explained, what if we are not interested in exact measurement, like we are looking at Solar Panels for defects, roughly we want to know if it has any bad cell. will it help if we keep Emissivity to 1.0 which is perfect black body.
@TEquipment
@TEquipment 4 жыл бұрын
In theory, if the exact measurement does not matter to you, then emissivity adjustment should also not matter for your application. It sounds like you just need to see a clear temperature difference between cells on-screen as an indication of a bad cell - this will be possible regardless of your emissivity adjustment. Emissivity adjustment is a crucial step only if you need the exact temperature measurement to be 100% accurate. Will standard 0.95 setting be fine for locating missing insulation / cold bridging behind plasterboard (sheetrock I believe you call it). I have a C5 for personal use to locate internal cold spots in a domestic house but it's summer here so the differential between inside and out is nowhere near as easy to detect as if it were winter. The plasterboard is generally painted cream in colour.

Yes that setting should be suitable for drywall with an off-white paint, but it really depends on the paint. Typical white, cream and yellow paints will range in emissivity from 0.9 to 0.95.

I work in a Power Grid, the Switch Gears(AIS) are mostly made of aluminum and some copper parts also. but whenever I try to measure it with the correct emissivity for copper(0.02) or Aluminium(0.05), It's shows like 200+ degrees of Celsius , when it should be betoween 50 to 70. what is there I'm missing?

Hi…can u capture in a thermoCam the hot air which lies In summer on top of dry land and flickers like boiling? I want to find a way to capture thermal air convection on a thermal cam… Thanx
@TEquipment

This type of thermal camera can only measure surface temperature of solids and liquids - they cannot measure air temperature. There are cameras that can image gases in the mid and shortwave, but if a typical longwave thermal imager like the one in this video saw air temperature it wouldn't be very practical, like looking into a thick fog. If you have more questions, feel free to contact our experts. You can call us at (877) 571-7901, email Sales@TEquipment.net, or live chat on www.tequipment.net/

How would you account for measuring through a window? For example, an optical element with transmission of 0.9. Is there another correction that should be added to emissivity due to the window?

The E95's image quality is impressive. I have a TG267 for home inspections. Do you think that model does pretty well for basic inspections, like finding missing insulation, hot circuit breakers or high moisture spots? I'd like to upgrade, but a $500 camera is what I can afford at this moment.

Hello, a thermal imager would help for any temperature disparities created by leaks and moisture, but the clearest indicator would be a moisture meter. FLIR sells imaging moisture meters for a clear picture, but you can shop all moisture meters here: www.tequipment.net/environmental-testers-physical-property/moisture-meters/?search=true

@TEquipment

It is possible, yes. However, it's not as simple as just turning the camera on and pointing it at the air. If you're interested, this study gives some more insight: www.researchgate.net/publication/242429314_VISUALIZATION_AND_MEASUREMENT_OF_AIR_TEMPERATURE_USING_INFRARED_THERMOGRAPHY You can also contact us to speak with a certified thermographer: www.tequipment.net/

Well, hell that explains why i cant get a correct reading on a car AC lines.
@TEquipment
@TEquipment 2 жыл бұрын
AC lines are typically either steel or aluminum with a reflective corrosion-resistant coating. For reflective surfaces, you'll need to lower your emissivity. For polished aluminum, try 0.88 - you can find more detailed emissivity tables online that include a wider range of materials.
