KolibriOS is a tiny yet incredibly powerful and fast operating system. This power requires only a few megabyte disk space and 8MB of RAM to run. Kolibri features a rich set of applications that include word processor, image viewer, graphical editor, web browser and well over 30 exciting games.

I used to boot into MenuetOS - the system this is based on - for fun back in the day. To young 13-14 years old me back then, it was mind blowing to start into something other than DOS or Windows from a 3.5" floppy diskette. At the same time I did my first steps into Linux using my Knoppix 3.7 LiveCD. Crazy times.

While it wasn't my first Linux, I did use Knoppix for about a year as my sole OS like 20-ish years ago. Fun times, I'd say.

I used knoppix 6.4 on PC with no hdd, but with two NICs and a dsl modem(without routing function) and an usb-stick with a shell script to configure the NICS to enable routing and portforwarding and to login to the provider with a password and a second script to logout. Using Windows with putty and winscp to telecontrol the software router.

Imagine deploying 200-300 of these as VMs for Remote Desktop. On a server with, like, a spacious gig of ram.

Great video. I remember when linux fit on a floppy. It would be nice if the operating systems were programmed to optimize efficiency and space, sadly they seem to emphasize bloat and telemetry on the user.

That's impressive. Back in the early 90s, before Windows 95 came out, I managed to do something similar with Windows 3.1, but nowhere near as functional as this.

It does show how bloated Win95 was, the name “Microsoft” was joke, to Amiga users.

@@kjetilhvalstrand1009 Yeah, I was an Amiga user until late 1993 or early 1994. An install of Windows 95 would have taken up the majority of my Amiga's 40MB hard drive all on its own (As I recall, my typical installation of 95 was around 30MB when I first started using the betas in mid-1995).

I have no floppy drive, but a DosBox emulator app installed and there is a special mount command to mount an image file. But i am not sure if it starts the OS from the image file. DosBox emulates an intel 80386/80387 32 bit CPU with svga-S3 graphic.

Don, I'm surprised that with all the equipment you've got laying around you don't have a USB floppy drive handy. Menuet, and this fork of it called Kolibri, they really prove that modern computing is just far too bloated. Sure, not everyone wants to program in assembly, but even FASM can use macros and you can easily develop your own code libraries that over time developing things in a given language gets faster and easier. As an example of bloat, I downloaded a program written in Rust that was just under a thousand lines of code, and it generated a 12mb binary and half a gig of extra junk that isn't even needed to run the program.

Amazing right? A whole operating system, with a desktop and other programs in 1.44MB. Think about how bloated current OS'es are. I mean, they look better, sure. But why do they consume more than 1GB of ram at idle? And do they really need 400 processes running at idle for desktop in 2024? Its just a clownshow these days.

When I first boot up, the OS I use, Slackware, only uses around 700mb of RAM. Of course, I use KDE, so that's more than twice what it might with another WM/DE. For instance, when I enter run level 4 and close all the GUI components, it's around 300mb of RAM. This is with nothing running too.
@SchoolforHackers

Oh, the joys of manually choosing run level. Yeah baby.
@anon_y_mousse
@anon_y_mousse 3 ай бұрын
@@SchoolforHackers It's not that I have to, because it's set up by default to boot to SDDM, but doing so clears all the memory used by the various GUI components that get started by the boot process. I've found that merely logging out clears most of that RAM, but I take it a step further.

Looked like compressed floppy so 1.44 mb == 2.88 mb, yes its impressive, this must be stripped exe files, the way some OS static link is extremely bad for exe files, I guess it depends on download software when you need it. As so small I’m guessing no drivers, depending on std PC hardware floppy and VESA, ps2 etc.
