My absolute favorite curriculum! If you are looking for secular ELA curriculum, this is your best bet. It’s thorough, well laid out and flexible enough that it can be easily adapted to the individual needs of your students and family. I have used the various levels for multiple years and with mixed grade levels. I hope you enjoy this review.

oh, yay!!! i am super looking forward to working through this level! what's funny is that i ordered level 6 for my daughter originally, but i just have FOMO about missing out on level 5, and we have a brave writer arrow for anne of green gables, too, so, i'll save it for when we get there. we haven't yet actually tried a brave writer, so, this'll be a first. i'm interested to see how my schedule for the fall works out. we have always been homeschoolers, but for 3rd and 4th grade, we did a hybrid school, which honestly was fun for my daughter, but i feel she didn't gain much educationally, so, i'm glad we switched back to full-time HS. anyway, all that to say, i plan to try and do LA twice a week in the fall - and math twice a week, with friday as the sort of fun/catch-up day. we shall see how that goes, aha!! thanks for your review!!! i already have my books ordered for this, and my level 5 should be here soon. one thing to note for anyone reading these comments is that rainbow resources has a decent package price for the actual literature! i did price against thriftbooks, but i think rainbow resource may have been better.

Excellent overview! You helped me ultimately decide on this program. In fact, I stopped your video to place my order for the 2023-24 school year. We’ll be doing the literature and grammar components, but I’m looking to IEW/Structure & Style for writing. Again, thank you!

We are using Lightning Lit. 4 & I love everything about it. I wish I didn't have to add spelling, but otherwise, it's great! Next year, I am considering* using level 1 for my first grader & plan to pair it with Five in a Row to build a full curriculum.

TBH we don’t worry about spelling. This might bite us in the buns someday, but my theory is that since we read so much, the spelling will adjust itself. So far that has worked really well with the Prisoner

Thank you so much for such a thorough review. We love literature based curriculums I had not heard of this one until recently....I have a 4th grader who is a struggling reader and writer. Wondering how you determined which level was appropriate for your kiddos? Would you say this curriculum is advanced?
@HomeschoolHappyHour
@HomeschoolHappyHour 2 жыл бұрын
I would say it’s thorough. If your kiddo is struggling with reading/ writing, I recommend starting at least one grade level back, no matter the curriculum you use. It’s better for a child to find the lessons too easy and move forward more quickly if necessary, than to struggle and have to pull back. Particularly when they’re young and we want them to enjoy reading/writing. For LL in particular, I would look at the reading list for each grade and choose based on your child’s interest in the books. The work can be easily adapted to make it easier or harder as needed. Try and keep it fun 💕

We will be starting lighting lit this next year for the first time. Is there vocabulary built into the curriculum? I’m wondering if I need to add it. We are doing 4th and 5th.
@HomeschoolHappyHour
@HomeschoolHappyHour 3 жыл бұрын
It does not specifically work in vocabulary. However, I found it easy to work it in myself. Toward the end of this year I had my kids try Spelling Classroom online for some more intentional spelling and vocabulary and they loved it. I tend to shy away from online activities, but I will sign up for this next year.

How would you recommend approaching this curriculum if your family has already read some of the books together? Also, if you have multiple kids in different grades does it lend itself to doing things as a group?
@HomeschoolHappyHour
@HomeschoolHappyHour 2 жыл бұрын
Until recently, we did this as a group and it worked really well. If you’ve already read some of the materials it’s really up to you if you want to reread or perhaps choose an alternative book?

Did you read the books aloud or have your daughter read them? I’d like for my daughter to read them, but I’d like to know what’s going on to be able to teach her. I’m assuming the teacher’s guide is a big help with this. I was just wondering how it worked for you.
@HomeschoolHappyHour
@HomeschoolHappyHour 3 жыл бұрын
Both actually. My 11 year old asked to read them independently this year, but I continued to read out loud to my 9 year old. I enjoy reading out loud with them so that’s my preference, but the teacher’s guide spells out everything you need to know if you are unable to read the book with your kiddos. 💕

I had never diagrammed at all prior to these books. It builds on itself depending on what level you are in, but even if you jump in the teacher manual will guide you through steps that may have been covered in previous books

Every “grade” is arranged to be used over the course of one “typical” school year. About 36 weeks if you follow the schedule exactly. Of course you can always go faster or slower to suit your needs.

I have a very particular soon to be 5th grader... If he's into the book, it's all good. But if he's really not feeling it, it's torture (for everyone). Did you encounter any books that were challenging to finish (not because they were hard but because the topic was not of interest to the child)... What did you do? Because it looks like there is a progression that builds...
@HomeschoolHappyHour

We loved the vast majority of the books, but there have been a few over the years that just weren’t our style. I generally read aloud, so that helps ensure we get through them all and gives the kids the opportunity to busy their hands if they aren’t as interested in a particular book.
