I find it cute that Daria is, according to the teachers, becoming more approachable and taking charge of herself by by, conveniently, taking steps to make herself more conventionally attractive and associating her glasses with negative traits like hostility.

What? How is that cute, and how do glasses convey or any clothing article of clothing or accessories convey negaative or positive traits? That's just a form of projection, based on societal standards, where Society says, " these clothes or articles of clothing mean 'this...'. Therefore, it is this". There's nothing cute about that.

Man, I wish I could say I did not take offense to the teachers' comments. Probably because I have been in the exact same situation. They're glasses. They're just meant for me to be able to see. I'm not wearing them or the contacts for any other reason.

What the? as someone who's had OK eye sight growing up and never experienced friends or classmates who went with contacts cuz of how Ive been told how they can have issue's like losing one or one being sucked into your behind the eye area. has anyone really reacted this way when someone gets them? seems strange how everyone thinks its an improvement to her...and a little worrying

If people are used to seeing you wear glasses they can think you look different without them, so whilst its played up here for comic effect its not entirely unbelievable.

In real life? Not really, but with Daria her whole thing is not fitting in, not caring what other people think so when people see her with contacts instead of those big ol' nerdy glasses, they see her taking a step forward to caring about her appearance. Also to quell anyone's fear about contacts getting stuck behind the eye, it's impossible for the contact to get behind your eye because of how the lids are attached to the eye.
