A curious Windows tablet: Dell Venue 8 Pro (4 Years Later)!

The Dell Venue 8 Pro is a Windows tablet, initially released in December of 2013. The Dell Venue 8 Pro was a very forward-thinking tablet, with a frugal but surprisingly capable Intel Atom Z3740D processor, a vivid laminated IPS screen, and a distinguished appearance, all for a retail price of only $300 at launch. In this video I take an in-depth look of this tablet in the context of 2018, talk about its shortcomings, and even put it through its paces with PC Gaming! - Team Fortress 2 and Runescape.

Some notes I had that I forgot to include in the video: - Display: Beautiful IPS screen colors, great despite low pixel density. Supports synaptics-based active pen. Very bright, capable of upto 370 nits. - Dell is still supporting this device with BIOS updates and even released a BIOS to fix the Spectre/Meltdown exploits - A modern version of this device is available at Dell, with USB-C, newer more powerful Intel Atom Cherry Trail chipset (Dell Venue 8 Pro 5855) and a new higher resolution display.

@@melesquilona5821 If you want the more tablet function of it you can hit the Windows key go to the Microsoft store and get Apps from there.

Quick little update: If you bought this device i'd recommend putting the oldest (the first build) of Windows 10 (Build 1507) - it works VERY smoothly on this device, just as good as Windows 8 and also has fixes for sleep drainage issues which happened under Windows 8/8.1. And an added plus is that Netflix + other microsoft store apps work better. The newer Windows 10 builds run like pure garbage on this tablet so I do not recommend them.

Really glad you made this video. I have respect for the Dell Venue 8 Pro. I kind of dusted it off just to see what it could do and was blown away by how well I was able to play portal on it. And you'er right, the screen is top notch, beautiful IPS display! I have the 32gb HD 2GB DDR3 version and I got it for $200 like 4 years back. Have you ever gotten a bluetooth controller to connect with windows 8.1? I'd like to know. All the same got a new Sub' Amigo! Keep up the good work!

Thanks for making this video. I recently turned mine on for the first time since 2017 and made the mistake of "upgrading" it to Windows 10. Gonna use it as a PDF reader and e-reader!

Do you have the 1gb or 2gb version? I have both and the 1gb struggles, so slow that it drives me nuts. The 2gb is nice and smooth; it has been on all versions of Win10 - but the 1809 version greatly reduced the SSD (actually an eMMC) storage that is used up. Also, very worthwhile to do a clean install of Win 10 and remove the original Dell recovery partitions, which aren't really needed. BTW I did a clean install last month on a left-over, almost nib, Win8.1 5030 (2gb) and was surprised I got an activated version of Win10. Theoretically Win8.1 no longer updates to Win 10 for free, but it did!

I ordered the 5855 version and I am excited to get I want to use it as a tester of sorts for neverware's cloudready os. Also maybe try other os's, but mainly for cloudready os. I tried other windows tables ranging from 8 inch to 10.5 inch with no luck. They don't boot the os (cloudready) and they are horribly slow with windows 10. So maybe this one will be the tablet I've been looking for, the good thing is that it does boot cloudready. So I just have to see if it's worth wiping windows and keeping cloudready on as the permanent os.

I have the newer 5855 Venue 8 Pro. The performance is terrible compared to the previous model. It's a known issue this newer model thermal throttles way too much and once it gets just a little heated up, it drops down to 80Mhz (speed of computers from 1995) and STAYS there rendering the thing useless. It's a beautiful machine in every other way, but Dell hasn't addressed this overheating/throttling issue and at this point, never will since they stopped making tablets and got out of that market. I also tried utilities that let you control throttling thresholds with little success.

it's nice to see a new video on this, the value is insane, I've seen these going for $80. I got a dell venue 11 with 8gb of ram for like $220. Seems odd to me that people want to plug keyboard and mouse into a tablet - makes sense for benchmarking, but in real world use - shouldn't the user just get a laptop for that? A tablet is for a totally different use case, which the mainstream market has clearly misunderstood. The general distaste users had for windows 8.1 and the popularity of 2 in 1s if proof of this, unfortunately. I hope dell doesn't drop the venue series entirely.

It's easier to carry with you without a keyboard, then when you need the keyboard, it's there, unlike with a laptop which is bigger and heavier.

Just found my own Venue Pro 8 and charged it up. Still works great, but I'm thinking of installing Android on it. Did you ever create that video on the bios settings?

I looked for it also, seems he hasn't. Maybe just post in the comments. Still like the size of this tablet. I was going to buy something to keep in my car, but remember I had this on the shelf. Charged right up. Diagnostics test say battery is still 78% healthy.

So can you comment which bios is best for Windows 8.1? I pulled mine off the shelf to put to use in my car just to browse while waiting for the wife and to view my dashcam microsd card videos. Mine still has Bios A04 on it. I don't plan to upgrade to windows 10 or game on it.

Not sure if you are still monitoring this but here goes with a question: Forgot that I had one of these and just came across it recently. Can't get it to charge or turn on even when plugged in. It has been sitting in it's original box for several years. Any suggestions? Much appreciated

I've had this issue. There is a way to fix it and get it to turn on. I read about it in a google search. I think it involves having the charging cable plugged in and turning on the unit holding down the Volume Up key at the same time. Give it a shot. It brings up a utility menu. Once you got that far, you can shut it down and reboot and it should be working again.

I always liked this tablet but it had issues and limitations of the bios (or design?) at the time i bought it: *could not use keyboard and mouse without one lagging and interfering with the other *could not use keyboard and mouse AND charge at the same time *sometimes would throttle based on heat *at the time, windows 8 apps sucked dankey kang maybe its different now a days but it was excellent for youtube and such and i remember playing a game called zombie HQ. looked good and it was a ton of fun.

Yes, I did, and it worked great natively! It had some bugs however: headphone jack audio output would not switch automatically, so you would need to enter a command in terminal if you wanted audio out the headphone jack. But otherwise it worked very smoothly!

Recently - however I found that android would only boot on the older BIOSes. With the newer BIOSes it wouldn't even boot

I have a 32GB model and it is useless. It has a few MB of memory left and has been barely used. I keep deleting stuff and doing disk cleanup and still only a few MB of memory. All media and added programs have been removed and still no memory. There is no way to upgrade the main SSD drive so the thing is basically a brick. SHould have gotten the 64GB model. Also the micro USB cable never seems to charge the thing properly. Too much current for that USB format. Needs dedicated power cable.

This tablet it's the most useless tech item I have ever bought in my life. The touch screen is so imprecise that I can't express how nervous I am whenever I decide to give it a change to use it for some simple everyday things. Oh and not to forget the connectivity issues that Dell has with their shitty drivers, both for WiFi and Bluetooth

I hate Dell Venue 8 Pro. Dell Venue 8 Pro would be replaced by iPad mini 2015 7.9“, iPad 2018 9.7“, Macbook 2017 12“, Air 2017 13“ and Pro 2018 13“.

In my experience with both the older and newer Dell Venue 8 Pro, as well as with various iPads, the iPad kicks the Dell's butt in terms of performance and usability. Windows as a tablet was a sorry adventure.
