Video Notes: -Two of my miters have a slight gap on the lid. This was most likely due to too much glue in the joint and nowhere for the glue to go when I clamped the box together. Assuming the inside corners contacted first when the box was clamped. -I should have used darker spline material as a black line would probably have been more visible in the end. In that case I would have used walnut for the interior liner. -Article for this video: jayscustomcreations.com/2018/01/curly-hickory-tiny-spline-mitered-box/ -Dozuki Z Saw used to cut spline kerf: amzn.to/2DUfE9z -Tools in my shop: jayscustomcreations.com/home/tools-resources/

Why did you want your Splines to be soooo thin? A thin table saw blade would’ve been too thick? Nonetheless, the box turned out great. Thanks for sharing.

My boss had a floor installed, of replaned century old oak barn wood. I collected some scraps to make a box for his birthday next month so I’m watching vids to learn how to do it. This is the best one so far, in doing everything I planned to do with my wood. Thanks so much; the lining was something I had not thought of. I was going to router the box and lid to fit the lid. This is a much smarter idea.

It is good to see a scraper used to finish the surfaces, not sandpaper. It really does provide a much deeper and more textured finish to the wood.

Jay, nice job on your box (could be great for a number of things). I have two comments that are not meant as criticisms at all, just part of a conversation about woodworking and method. First, the splines. They are so small as to not serve the purpose that splines were designed for. They do, however, add a nice visual touch to the box. Second, The box may have been improved by adding a top, glued inside the rectangle of the top on the box. It could be a different wood contrasting or complementing the hickory. I liked the curly maple used as a lining and a way to align the top.

Beautiful job on the box Jay. Several years ago I purchased a White Limba board, 2" thick, 9" wide and 8' long to make guitar bodies from. It was just rough sawn, straight from the mill. I was pleasantly surprised once i ran it through the planer ..entire length was nicely flamed from one side to the other. Sometimes ya get lucky

Nice work. I think I would have been tempted to inlay a nice piece of a darker Burl veneer into the top of the lid recess. I used to use the exact same process as you did there when I used to make keepsake boxes. I used a tablesaw jig like you said for the corner splines. Watching your videos makes me want to get back to woodworking again.

Now that you have learned the "trick" for Wrapping the grain all the way around the box. Try cutting a third groove on the inside to half the thickness of the sides. Then when you sever the top, you have a rabbet and the lid will index on the side without the liner.

Stewart-Macdonald sells some table saw blade with a 0.023" Kerf, for cutting fret slots on guitar/bass/etc. fretboards. Happens to be very close to the thickness of commercial veneer sheets (~0.6mm, or 1/43"). You could use it to cut spline slots, then glue veneers in for the spline.

Nice . I once had a huge pile of walnut and cherry that was just too nice for drawer sides so I ordered 200bf of maple. I went and picked it up and they loaded it while I paid, I got home and it was all highly figured. I had to order more maple to make drawer sides. Sometimes you get lucky and hit a pocket of material with amazing figure. Those are good days!
