What did you think Legends?!?!? just spoke to Duffman; the APEX series aren’t up on his webpage. There’s some info on the Duffrods page on Facebook if you’re that way inclined. He has info to send out if you need it, just flick him a message. Tight lines legends.!!!!!!!

Excelent video Byron. I can’t imagine how amazing it would have been to gain some of his insight into rod making. What a passion he has. Thanks a million for sharing this with us. My grip of choice is definitely a split grip for finesse fishing. I feel as if having a naked reel seat and grip design helps me relax and try not to treat it like a broomstick haha.

love the philosophy of buy local to support local. also the info on the flexi guides and multi-directional was something i had never heard of but will be looking for in future rods. In relation to the grips the comments regarding slippery hands are correct. I remember back in the day my dads brand new custom made barra rod flying into the water (with a live mullet attached) as it slipped through his BBQ chicken greased hands. Even as a kid i new how much this hurt and even more so when he dived headfirst into croc infested waters to try and find it, but no luck. In relation to my rods it depends on how im fishing, for my smaller baitcasters (when flicking lures) i like a pistol grip style reel seat with a naked (bar blank) and then a cork grip. The extra length and cork grip lets me add pressure for a longer cast when needed without fear of loosing the rod. Also i think this looks cool. I also like this extended grip for my spinning reel jigging rods. However, for my bait roads (big or small) i like a one peace non-slip grip (i find cork does the job well). This is due to the rod being placed in the rod holder while the bait soaks. I think the full length cork helps protect the blank. I haven't tried a Duff rod and to be fair i didnt no they existed until your video. But now i do they and their non-slip grips will be on my radar when i get my next rod.

Good morning Byron! I'm watching the clip on the TV and commenting on my phone, haha. Loving how Steve uses all Australian material. Amazing bloke! I'm torn on the handle of a rod. I started with cork, and it's still my comfort zone, I've got probably 5 EVA handled rods that just don't go wrong, and now a couple of carbon fibre ones. I don't like the slippery was of them, but do like the 'touch' of feeling a fish... I'd go for cork as my preference though, it seems old fashioned, but I like the raw feel of it... Thanks mate, have a great day!

Great video Mate - I really liked the way you took the time to address the difference between hand made and custom rods. Its a slight, but important distinction. You definitely always have your consumer in mind when you create your content. As for rod grips it generally depends on the rods purpose. Light estuary rods I really like skeletonised EVA while on swimbait rods I prefer a meatier EVA/Cork combination. #1 thing for me in not too much plastic furniture to rub on your hands.

Great to see you back mate. Interesting vid. I didn’t know that anyone other than GLoomis was using recoils. Personally my grip preference changes depending on what I am using it for. Bream fishing - skeleton grips 100% Bass/Jew/flathead/etc- most of my fishing, I heavily favour cork. For the big stuff (GT,Tuna, whatever- I favour EVA. I actually own a Duffrod I bought second hand off a dude in a McDonald’s car park years ago (turned out to be Dave Welfare, now a guy I actually know). If I was to win- one spin rod for jewfish - 5-6.5” plastics on 3/8 -1/2oz. And a swimbait rod for mid sized stuff (2-4oz). Glad to see you back BTH. Nice vid.

Hey hey. Nice vid. A great insight into rod building intricacies. Those flexi guides look silly but fantastic! Defo a good thing for those of us creek bashing and tripping over trees, vines and boulders all day 😅 As far as grips go.... im not too fussy. The skeleton or hard plastic are usually moulded well to fit hands comfortably, but they can be slippery. Cork is classic and is appealing for its style, but gets mucky and starts falling apart faster than other options. And the eva grips are a good in between of the other two. Plus having the option of colour and pattern is a plus. So i guess i go eva for versatility.

I love the Eva grips but I find I have a connection with the split grips. It just makes the rod look a little longer and less bulky It give it the look like you know it's going to be light when you pick it up. I like especially when I'm fishing with the longer rods, to have a small grip at the bottom to wrap my whole hand around just to get that max casting distance. Plus I love your videos I think you give the best explanations out of any other fishing KZfaqr that's why I became a member.

Loved this concept! Learned heaps. Might have to have a crack at making my own. I like a Eva grip at the reel with a light short carbon fibre butt section, if they’re too long they make surface fishing from the kayak painful

great video from a local rod maker, good insight on the rod guides that are often undervalued. As for the grip material, I prefer EVA split grip, as it feels comfortable on my hands and most of my rods are using this material and I've become used to this material. I have a couple rods that are using carbon-based material like Shimano Zodias, they are excellent. but not many that are selling rods with this kind of material, especially from production-based companies.

Hey mate! I don’t typically let the material sway me on a rod too much but my preference is normally EVA purely because it’s what I’m most comfortable with. However it’s hard to resist a bloody sexy cork handle or something different like the carbon fibre used on the duffs! Overall I don’t discriminate when it comes to material types I think it’s more the handle/reel seat feel that gets me over the line. Keep up the good work mate!

Thanks Cody! I think you’re right, the rods gotta perform for you first. Material comes second.

ive only used EVA and cork handles and i defiantly preffer the EVA simply becasue the cork grips ive had have worn out over time and have ruined the rod. in saying that i would be interested in trying a carbon handle at some point to see how they feel.. great to see you back Byron i've been missing ya videos👍

Interesting video mate! I actually went through a few rod brands and I went and bought 2-4kg black widow edge rod and didn't like it!! Wasn't sensitive enough for what I like and I was dropping way to many fish! Ended up getting a Shimano/jackall posion adrena and love it! Rods are definitely a personal thing! Just because they are expensive and other people rate them doesn't mean its the right one for you! Shop around find what works for you and stick with it. I've discovered looking at quite a few brands there are not as many as you think you will like! Reels are easier to buy 😂🎣

@sandytrackx fishing am interested in your thoughts on the Edge you didn’t like. Their reputation is unparalleled, you matched it with your recent 2500 twin power ? I’ve found the Edge is similar to the original Loomis, a 2-4kg is more a USA interpretation, what we would call a 3-6/4-8. Also like your vids mate. Got a mate heading your way to do a collab, looking forward to it.

Cork because of how light it is and how we’ll your grip is when wet but monocoque butts r very nice with a better feel which replaces the cork grip in lightness for me and looks heaps better but is harder to grip when wet👌

I found your channel a short while back after looking for soft plastic reviews, namely Daiwa Bait Junkie reviews, I gave them a go and I really like the quality in comparison to Zman and Savage Gear ones I had been using. The Daiwa seem to last much longer as they feel stronger, slightly stiffer, more elastic than the Savage Gear soft plastics that feel brittle and the Zman which I feel that have more delicate tails that get their tails eaten off after the first or second hit. Safe to say I've only bought Daiwa since, in fact I bought a few packs today. I'm keen to try a carbon handle, in the mean time it's EVA for me.
