A Dance with Dragons is now three years older than I was when A Dance with Dragons released.
Hello everyone! Today I thought I'd discuss my favorite and least favorite chapters and thoughts on the most recent #asongoficeandfire novel.
Be sure to subscribe if you enjoyed this video! What do you think? Is there anything I missed? What do you think of #houseofthedragon so far? More #asoiaf content is on the way!
Thank you all for watching! I'll be back with more theories on Sunday. Character art in this video is by TheMico! Art in the thumbnail is by Enrique Corominas!

I've seen plenty of people be upset that The Winds of Winter has taken so long, but I have DEFINITIVE and INDISPUTIBLE proof that it must be coming out this year, and that the 13 year wait between Dance and Winds is actually a genius scheme that has been planned from the very beginning. You see, the Night's King was the 13th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. The Night's King also has 13 letters in their name/title. Some theories also suggest that the Night's King may have also been the last hero, who had a dozen companions - making them a group of 13. You see George planned it all out! It was always supposed to take 13 years for the Winds of Winter to come out! It was all a genius plan! The Winds of Winter confirmed.

I do agree that KingBreaker has one of the best action sequences in ASOIAF. Martin loves to have action be dictated by the perspective and experience of the pov character. KingBreaker is great because we see first hand how Barristan has lived long enough to become an old soldier. He knows exactly how much he needs to move to beat his opponent. He also knows his armor is a great advantage, but has enough experience to know he needs more vision then his helmet would normally allow. (Another really great example imo is the trial by seven in The Hedge Knight. Dunk can barely see anything and his relative lack of experience is emphasized by him focusing on a training technique he was taught.)

Ok, the reason Tyrion/Jorah in Volantis is so long is because Tyrion is worldly, learned, and observant - GRRM wants us to start thinking about and caring about Volantis (mixed results - I didn't start caring until my 6+ readthrough) but there's so much that this will matter if other books come out

Tyrion had a single plot point he absolutely needed to do in this book and that was to meet Danny and he didn't even do that in the end. Ofc people would hate long chapters that don't move the plot along.
@CheeseCrumbs00
@CheeseCrumbs00 22 күн бұрын
@@anonymous-hz2un Its more than that, its character driven. Tyrion adapts, to learn to navigate the world as a Dwarf without his high birth protecting him. Take the 2nd chapter on the Stinky Steward, Tyrion mocks Jorah until Mormont breaks one of his teeth. 'Below, in the galley, Tyrion was rinsing out his mouth with rum and water and wincing at the sting when Penny found him. “I heard what happened. Oh, are you hurt?” He shrugged. “A bit of blood and a broken tooth.” But I believe I hurt him more. “And him a knight. Sad to say, I would not count on Ser Jorah should we need protection.” “What did you do? Oh, your lip is bleeding.” She slipped a square from her sleeve and dabbed at it. “What did you say?” “A few truths Ser Bezoar did not care to hear.” “You mustn’t mock him. Don’t you know anything? You can’t talk that way to a big person. They can hurt you. Ser Jorah could have tossed you in the sea. The sailors would have laughed to see you drown. You have to be careful around big people. Be jolly and playful with them, keep them smiling, make them laugh, that’s what my father always said. Didn’t your father ever tell you how to act with big people?” “My father called them smallfolk,” said Tyrion, “and he was not what you’d call a jolly man.”' Look at how he escapes the camps, humbling himself to outwit the soldiers. ASOS Tyrion would've done no such thing.

Martin’s “pessimistic” blog was kinda cryptic though. The way he said “Winds of Winter WILL be announced” and then said “where and when I cannot say…” which seems like such a teaser, rather than “don’t get your hopes up, I’m clawing my eyes out writing it” is so exciting. George seems so positive lately, and sure that could be HOTD, but I rlly think he’s finished Winds and focussing on outlining dream while doing side projects, getting prepped for doing Dream soon

Quinn was crossing an emotional mountain range in this video. The Kingbreaker is a great chapter, I love that the next one is the Dragontamer - its ending makes the latter really suspenseful. The epilogue is really good too - there are so many plot hints in there. It might be one of GRRM’s most stacked non-vision chapter. From its opening with a character who should be important going forward to seeding Mercy, it makes stuff happen. Fun fact: Conningtons appear in two of the three of his favorite ADWD chapters.
@PineappleLiar
@PineappleLiar 23 күн бұрын
Before watching I gotta share my own best and worst three chapters no particular order. Best: Bran I- alongside the prologue this chapter does a great job at setting the tone of the book: its cold, there’s no food, and the only way to survive is at the expense of others. Very unsettling. Theon I- I’ll admit Theon is not my favorite character, but I can’t deny the drama inherent in this chapter. Winterfell is a simmering pot about to boil over, and Theon is smack in the middle of it. Cersei II- Yeah the walk of Shame was just a great character piece for Cersei. There’s some catharsis with this as its the first time in all her chapters where Cersei finally has to self-reflect to some extent, after spending all of Feast failing forward. Great chapter Worst: The Watcher- not necessarily bad in terms of content, but it has big ‘why is this here’ energy. I feel like this belonged either in Feast or Winds, and not as the sole Dorne POV in Dance. Especially given its placement halfway through the book, its such a non-sequitor Jon V- again I wouldn’t call any Jon chapter bad, in truth, its just there’s a lot there with not much happening. Jon V is here cause I remember it the least, and the one novel piece of info it has is just ‘the wildlings in Mole’s Town have been carving faces into the trees’. Tyrion II/Tyrion III - this one is a case of ‘did we really need two whole chapters for this?’ Given all that happens is Illyrio and Tyrion ride out of Pentos and meet up with the Griff squad. There’s bits of both I like, but there had to have been a more concise way of presenting it. Especially given the start of Dance is so heavily Jon and Tyrion laden, it becomes tiring.
@PineappleLiar
@PineappleLiar 23 күн бұрын
Ok now that I’ve seen the video it’s funny that there’s zero overlap on either the best or worst list! Shows how different priorities can result in wildly different opinions. As far as my own opinions on these chapters, for the worst ones while I do agree Tyrion had a lot of chapters just futzing around, I appreciate that he’s at least being used as a worldbuilding vessel. We get to see an angle on Essos we never have before, and while its not very consequential I like the downward descent of Tyrion’s autonomy, contrasted with his rising desire to live. Chapter 2 is the weakest imo, because it doesn’t really exist in a place, as most of it is Illyrion and Tyrion getting sloshed in a closed carriage. Every other Tyrion chapter has like the Rhoyne or the Smoking Sea or the Yunkai war camps to flavor the setting, making chapter 2 feel lacking. Dany 3 I’d probably say is a middling chapter for her in this book, honestly, because Xaro being there gives it a bit of a distinctive flair, and it does have some consequence as her turning down Xaro’s offer leads to Mereen having a blockade put in on naval trade, forcing the later compromises Dany has to make. I also just laugh at how profoundly Dany has screwed Xaro over in their multiple interactions. I’d say Dany V is worse, as it doesn’t have much to say that isn’t said in a more interesting way directly before or after it. Lastly for the Windblown, yeah that’s probably Quentyn’s worst chapter, given how he has a ‘get out of jail free’ card handed to him through no action of his own. Still, I like how it, more than any other chapter, makes real the consequences of Dany’s negligence in regards to Astapor. Yeah eventually the consequences reach Dany’s doorstep, as well, but Quentyn’s pov being in the thick of the combat does a better job of conveying that this city was ruined doubly so by first Dany’s conquest, then her abandonment. I also like how its the first time we realize the Yunkai armies are kinda dog water. It does come up in later Tyrion chapters, but the chapter does highlight the mercenary groups are run more like circus troupes than trained killers. As for all the good chapters, well yes they’re good. I’ll admit Jon Con’s chapter sometimes didn’t completely hold my attention, but I still enjoy a good military planning with the best of them. The scene of Barristan and Hizdhar during the coup was great, and the Epilogue has a council meeting which makes it top ten worthy even before the assassinations.

The best three chapters are Davos w/ Manderly (my son has come home and the north remembers), Doran with the Sandsnakes (oberyn was the viper & i was the grass), and Jon with the Iron Bank (when princes don't pay their debts, new princes take their place - which 1) shows Jon has a really sophisticated view of westerosi politics and 2) the iron bank has a deep knowledge of potential rival successors, much like littlefinger 3) Jon demonstrates a better *working* economic knowledge than pretty much any other POV character)

I’m surprised ppl don’t like Dany III. It sets up the large number of enemies Dany will have to face, along with beginning the slow burn siege of Meereen. And it shows how the world economy has been impacted by Dany’s disruption of the slave trade. Also presents an interesting insight on the effects and difficulties of disrupting an economic model and trying to replace it with another nascent one.

Dance was definitely my second favourite book after Storm of Swords. After AFFC, which I’ll admit was a struggle for me, Dance was so exciting. Some of my favourite characters returned, some really exciting plot progression, and omg “After the Feast” was so exciting when the pace really picked up and the two books sewed back together. You really got the sense that Feast and Dance were meant to be one book (even if some of the big battles were saved for Winds). I’m optimistic for Winds this year (and screw it, for ADOS too). We shall see! Also absolutely loving this channel. I completely forgot about/totally missed so much from the books so watching these is a joy and will be great pre winds. Was gonna do a full series re-read before Winds but if it ends up being this year I might leave it and save that for ADOS (which again I’m optimistic about, I truly believe that if Winds comes out this year we’ll get Dream in 5-7 years tops - maybe that’s hopium but if this book is setup for the end then I do think Martin will zoom to that ending)
@harrisont2004
@harrisont2004 23 күн бұрын
Also I really wouldn’t consider Dance to be slow paced. If anything Feast is slow paced and Dance’s first half (simultaneous with feast) kinda is too but more definitely happens in it and there’s more promise of plotlines moving. By the time it gets to its second half you really feel the motion again. Which is natural given the first three were really a trilogy of building pace and the last four were originally planned as a trilogy too, so it’s like the pace had to reset after storm and is only now picking up

My favourite chapter in The Dance gotta be the last Victarion's chapter. Victarion and Moqorro have this amazing dynamic of two fanatics to two malicious gods who seem to be the opposite of each other but in the same time so similar (maybe one and the same). U dont really know if Moqorro is a prisoner of Victarion or if it is the other way around. The two are like the yin yang of villainy, evil uncle Iroh and Zuko. I've always felt the reason Tyrion VII is so long is because it kind of would have been the perfect spot to end Tyrion's story in a Feast for Crows before the geographical split. It really feels like the culmination of everything Tyrion's story has been exploring thus far and leads into a 'new leg' of the journey. Volantis as a location is built up to quite substantially in Tyrion's previous chapters. We learn that Aegon and Jon Con have taken Tyrion's "advise" from his previous chapter and are heading west instead of east - setting up future events (I always felt the lost Lord would have been a great chapter 1 in Dance akin to 'the Prophet'). We are introduced to his new travelling companions, Jorah and Penny, who will be with Tyrion for the next faze of the journey. And we learn Penny wants to kill Tyrion because some people have killed her brother to try and impress Queen Cersei. This is likely the dwarf's head she examines in Cersei VIII (the head she sees in Cersei IV is clearly the priest Brienne meets in her second chapter), so we get to see the greater ramifications for her actions on Tyrion's and Penny's lives. Overall with that context in mind, I'm fine with the chapter's length, but it should have been trimmed down once it became the middle of Tyrion's story instead of the end.

The thing I’m looking forward the most in TWOW is Jaime’s storyline and how would Martin write himself out of that one because in my opinion, I think this is the plot that Martin wrote himself into the corner the most. - Valonqar being Jaime which would turn him into both a kingslayer and a queenslayer is too good not to happen so Jaime must at least survived his encounter with Catelyn first. - But why would Catelyn let Jaime go back to King’s Landing again when the last time she did it, she and her son got murdered at the red wedding? And in her perspective, it was Jaime who orchestrated the whole thing (the Rains of Castamere song and “Jaime Lannister sends his regards” by Roose) and I don’t blame her to think that way because if we put ourselves into the heads of the characters in this universe, it’s not weird to think that Jaime would be able to do something like that. After all, he’s known as an oathbreaker and the Lannisters have a long history of double crossing someone else. We only think that Catelyn is wrong because we spent so much time with Jaime and Brienne. In fact, Brienne is the only person who believes that Jaime is innocent. Everyone else thought that he’s very responsible for the red wedding. Even the Freys think so. So I still find it hard to believe that Cat would let him go again. - The so-called second red wedding. It might be a bad idea for Catelyn to include Jaime in this because Jaime and Brienne could likely sabotage her plans by rescuing some Freys. Catelyn might not be a smart person but in this vengeful persona, she can’t give the Freys, Boltons and Lannisters any chance to escape from her wrath. - If the conclusion of this storyline is that Brienne has to kill Catelyn to save Jaime, then what’s the point of reviving her in the first place just to die like that? No reunion with Arya, Sansa, Bran or Rickon. No escalating tension with Jon. No sabotaging the plans of Littlefinger (which could be poetic that for a “chaos is a ladder” guy like him, Catelyn, in a version that Peter won’t find attractive anymore, becoming a chaos that he cannot climb himself out of it). Just a piece of meat with a minimal purpose to the story. - The only way that Jaime going back to King’s Landing could work after this storyline is that something must happen between the way to Catelyn’s camp that Jaime and Brienne never reach the destination and in the end, Jaime runs away. However, that also means Podrick died from it so Brienne didn’t even have to trick Jaime into coming with her in the first place when Podrick ends up dying anyway no matter what she did. I believe that Martin’s genius mind could find a way out of this but I still stand that no other storyline could give him more headaches than this one.

My favorite would probably be the most misunderstood chapter in the whole series that being Daenerys X. Least favorite is Wayward Bride. Similar to how you felt about Tyrion in Volantis it was just way too damn long of a chapter just to tell you that Stannis took over. I also just don’t find Asha’s POV to be that interesting and think she’s better suited as a side character.

Knowing how George killed off heroes and villains, there’s no way Stannis survives while Roose and Ramsay die in this Battle of Ice. @@QuinnTheGM Yeah, something like that because I don’t think the story could go on without Jon vs Ramsay. It’s too poetic for that not to happen, considering that Ramsay is a personification of all the negative stereotypes that the other people (especially Catelyn. Of course, it’s Catelyn) think about Jon so it must be about him fighting his greatest demon so far.

@@QuinnTheGM Hes almost dead right now. Starving to death, from a mix of R'hllor visions and temporomandibular disorder. Stannis has been teeth grinding and snapping for years, I don't believe he can eat properly, when he does ask for food it is soft like boiled eggs and he is never seen eating in front of others. Asha even makes a point to note that he doesn't touch his food in ADWD. Look at how she describes him, everytime Davos sees him (even in ACOK) Stannis looks worse everytime.

@@CheeseCrumbs00 I think the jaw thing is just a visual metaphor for how tense and high strung he is. As for the eating and looking worse and worse, I think it is more of a magical thing. Note, it seems he doesn't sleep either. In Theon's WoW spoiler chapter, he describes Stannis's tower as only having a desk and one chair with no bed. There are other points where it is mentioned that Stannis doesn't seem to sleep. It could have something to do with the shadow baby, or some other influence Melisandre has had on him. A lot of this mirrors Beric Dondarrion, who also didn't eat nor sleep and looked awful.

My 3 top favorites are Chapter 31- Melisandre Chapter 46- A goast in winterfell Chapter 57- Tyrion In reality i love all of the theon chapters and and everything dealing with Yezzan. The sacrifice chapter was really good and would be on the list but its top 3. Chapter 31 shows the humanity of melisandre and the reality of her belief. She give first hand knowledge on magic and its cost. We also learn just how fickle prophecy can be. Chapter 46 is my absolute favorite because it is a mini mystery story. Chapter 57 deals with the death of Yezzan and we learn he is not as bad as some would portray him to be. Also it has extreme dysentery and how sickness hits an army.

It has its moments. When he's with Griff and Co, those are pretty fun and interesting chapters. As well as at the end seeing the horrors of slavery and his interaction with Brown Ben Plumm and Inkpots. If I had to be honest I think Daenerys has the weakest arch in Dance.

I was thirteen when the spanish box set was gifted to me around Christmas of 2014. Such warm memories, those were my Winterfell days. I can't help but keep hoping that 10 years later, I can get back into that magical crazy world. Edit: it's a bad translation, but the covers are way, way better than the old english edition, an, in my opinión, this new box set edition.

I'm rooting for Martin and I still have hope, but I can also feel it dwindling, to be honest. In 2022 he said he had 1100-1200 (manuscript) pages. In November 2023 he said the same, with 400-500 pages to go. Unless he either lied about it or put in a lot more effort than the previous years, I think it unlikely we will get an announcement any time soon. He actively tried to put a stop to people's speculations about a speedy release of WoW for a reason. He's just not done yet, probably not even close. I believe he's just being honest. so we don't get our hopes up and then scold him when he doesn't announce it at Worldcon. On antoher note, the next election in the US might take the country down a very dark path, one that Martin would absolutely hate. He's not a young man anymore, the world is going to shit, he's lost a lot of friends over the last couple of years and covid was a really bad time for him. I don't see him finishing WoW in fascist America, should D. T. win.

My favorite chapters in Dance are Bran's and Theon's and my number 1 favorite chapter in the book is Bran III. Bran II is also really great with him meeting Bloodraven. But Bran III has so much in it about magic, Bloodraven, the Children, and especially all those weirwood visions of the past - beautifully written and so much info, especially with what is hinted with the oldest scene he sees at the end. Overall I like North chapters in the Dance better than the Essos chapters. Theon's chapters are some of the best stuff in the series. I love his last one in particular. Other than those, Cersei's chapter is strong, Victation's chapters are hilarious, I loved getting Melisandre's POV, JonCon was interesting too, and while Dany's chapters are hit and miss, her last chapter has some of GRRM's most beautiful and emotional writing when she's having a hallucination of Viserys.

But the new covers being announced is the strongest evidence I've seen that Winds is close to being finished so I don't think it's super unlikely that Martin is waiting till after HOTD S2 finishes to announce the publication date for Winds.

Honourable mention for best chapter must go to _any_ of the Victarion chapters, where old dumb-as-a-stump is having the best time of his life ... BUT ... only if listened to on audiobook - seriously, Roy Dotrice came up with a voice for Victarion that's unique to the character (unlike a lot of his other voices which he recycles among several characters) and it's not the voice I'd ever imagined for Victarion but now I can't imagine it any other way. Plus, Victarion's chapter are just filled with banger quotes, elevated to a whole other level when said in the Dotrice voice; including gems such as _"The most beautiful woman in the world has urgent need of my axe"_ and _"On wings of song I fly to you, Daenerys"_ and the incomparable _"But first I will tie you over the rail and make the crew a gift of your arse"_

maybe this is gonna be an unpopular opinion, but I think it kind of makes sense if world con doesn’t give George a panel because realistically the only question people are going to want to ask and know the answer to is, when is the winds of winter coming out? and any question other than that one gets asked its going to be met with some form of annoyance or little concern. So I think it makes sense for world con to kind of hold out on George and not give him his spotlight because questions and responses will be mixed and repetitive, plus maybe they think it’ll hold him accountable 🤷🏼‍♀️ just a game theory tho

I so don't agree about The Windblown, I think after The Dragontamer it's Quentyn's second best chapter. Sure, the worldbuilding is a bit redundant with what we've seen from other POV characters in Essos but a) that's much more the case in The Merchant's Man than it is here, and b) I don't agree at all that bringing the reader up to speed is the purpose of this chapter. The Windblown is really interesting to me because it's a battle sequence that isn't written like any of the others in the series. Instead of focusing on the action and the tension the characters are feeling, the focus is on the aftermath and how Quentyn is traumatized and sickened by all of it. Quentyn's arc begins with the quote "Adventure stank", which summarizes it's overall themes of subverting the traditional fantasy quest to travel far and wide, tame dragons, battle armies, and woo princesses, this chapter is essential in compounding on that theme by showing us how someone like Quentyn, someone fairly ordinary and not any kind of archetypical fantasy hero, deals with being thrust into a warzone. It's ugly, it's messy, it's nauseating, and I'm sorry you don't love that chapter like I do.
