If you know approximately when the château/hotel was closed down by the police, why not contact the police station and ask them to look into their records. If you can obtain the specific date, go to your local library and search for news paper articles about the closing.

My auntie has investigated our family tree over the years and found out that one of our ancestors way back is the mathematician John Venn who brought about the Venn diagram. Consequently hundreds of years later my dad became a maths master and ran a maths department in one of our local secondary modern schools. Sadly that is now gone. Years after that my brother turned out to be a skilled mathematician and my son is also pretty good as is my cousin. Strange how it appears to follow down the male side of my dads family.

Researching family history can be very interesting. A relative of mine pass away and I was asked to trace his relatives on my mothers side. This search involved finding relatives of an Aunt that married a Canadian and settled in Canada in the 1930’s. To cut a long story short, I found eight relatives I did not know off. When I made contact with the Canadian relatives, they wanted to know why the name McMath was used as a middle name in the past. It turned out that a John McMath was in a scotish regiment and was married in Chatham Kent, prior to being ordered to guard convicts being transported to Australia from Sheerness. One of his daughters (born in India) married and moved to Canada with her husband, which started the Canada family connection. Good luck Phil, with finding your tree. One word of warning, I did a tree for a friend and found an ancestor was hung in public for murdering his wife.

A building there since 1100 there is bound to be remnants of cellar s from previous buildings as often they were left and only what you saw above ground was changed, the moat is later added so extensive rooms under ground will exist with pillars added for point loads in chateau rebuilds, our home z,1600 but ahome here back to 1100 and earlier as a building existed here in Exeter book ,part of the Doomsday book undertaken by william the Concurour in 1070s!we had a new floor put in as damp we hit and removed saxon floor of broken rotted sandstone slabs.

Phil it’s sounding like a lot of places with this type of cellar. You’ll hear about all the tunnels across the world where ease of movement was ideal for traffickers. So much about to come out on that. Weeks or even days away. Lot been going on worldwide. I hope in your case the cellar was not for nefarious purposes. It made me think when the boy was sent out to play while the men had a meeting; the Masons maybe? Tangled web there Phil. You are doing something great with your family tree research. Please tell us if you come across some famous person 😄

There must be some newspaper clips about the hotel/brothel or the police, or the family/people involved - look in the local newspaper archives online or hard copy in the library if not online. Newspapers are a great source of historical information about a house. The local "social" columns also tell what people were doing. They used to have those back then. Probably require a subscription but so worth it if you're looking for something like this.

I've been wondering if you were going to get back to exploring the tunnels. As I remember you were going to wait because you were planning on another season of having guests. It would be very interesting to see them. Have you considered having a metal detectorist out to see what they could find? I'd also suggest speaking with the police department, if you haven't already. They may have some records still. At any rate, thanks for the update, and I look forward to seeing what you find. Cheers!

What about the spiral staircase found under the foundation of the added stairway? Could it be a stash of wine in a cellar. I have a huge challenge tracing my family because of adoption and even with all the reforms on access to preadoption birth certificates in my state the document by law is sealed. DNA reveals whoever were my relatives they came from France, England, and Ireland. What a combo.

That’s a fabulous idea. I do hope some locals contact you with the recent history of your house. I live in an old stables that was for the dairy farm so the milk could be delivered by the horses. My place has been an illegal gambling casino. A flop house in the depression where they rented beds out. It’s been a brothel and a furniture restorers. I know this because an old man has lived here all of his life and as a young boy he was the one who alerted the illegal casino that the police were in the vicinity. He was a called a cockatoo. Yes, I live in Sydney Australia. It makes it such a difference to know this. I’m also old enough to go to the place where they processed the milk and the reason why the stables were there in the first place and before they shut the dairy milk processing plant before they knocked it down. I find that bit bizarre. Good luck. You never know what history you will find. Thank you. May you all please take care and stay safe. Louisa. 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️🤩🤩🤩

Do your local libraries still have microfiche machines? There may be old news articles from the 70s that you could find that have not been computerized. A lot of local newspapers didn't bother. But they may still have the old microfiche machines and the old films that you can look at. And if you have the year it was closed down, that'll narrow your search to just news articles from that year.

Does your community have a Historical Society? A lot of those institutions have some wonderful documents, plans, and drawings of important buildings, which certainly your house ought to be. Did the house get used as a "house of ill-repute"? That could be why the cops closed it down; that or an illegal gambling venue.

I have always loved history of all kinds but family history is my addiction! LOL! I have so much about my dad's family now that I need to figure out a way of writing a book - one that would be interesting, not boring. For general family history searching in the States and Norway, I have found a lot. For locations, it helped to know who lived there. I hope you find more local info soon! I did a lot of searching just using my great grandpa's name and location and found some fun things - like he apparently didn't understand the importance of fences in Dakota Territory, since his neighbor put in the paper that he was not my great grandpa's (and a few other neighbors) cowboy. My great grandpa came from an island owned by his family. No fences needed!

Fascinating about the Chateau... wonder what the deal was... I'm curious now. As for my family history... My Aunt on my mother's side has traced our family history back quite a bit... but as for my father's side... so the story goes ...... My father's great-grandfather came from somewhere out east but not exactly sure where... But he was 12 years old and his father was a horrible man. Mean and vicious and often beat him... well... he and his sister were supposed to plant the field... which they did... however his sister did a terrible job and the rows she did were terribly crooked... and he knew that his father would beat her for that... so he told her to tell their father that he did it. And he ran away from home... (which we do know he did run away from home at the age of 12)... well he met up with a nice family which was heading to the North West... well... they were super nice to him and helped him and pretty much took him in... He refused to tell them his last name. Eventually, he took their last name... he stayed with them and helped them homestead in North Dakota somewhere. So... there is the problem right there... we have no idea what his real last name was. So our "family" last name... kinda isn't really ours????? I don't know if that makes sense. But yeah... don't know who he was for sure. No one ever learned what his real name was. So if we trace back well ... we just find out about the history or that family... not his real family... how strange is that?

Was that actually illegal in France at that time? In some European countries it was (and is) simply a relatively tightly regulated business, as legal as any other in the service industry (even though it's often suspected to attract more illegal side activities than many other businesses). Edit: I looked it up and it became illegal soon after WWII and still is. Certainly a possibility.
